i use to look forward to late night TV...especially Letterman....I wish they'd air reruns at 11:30 pm, starting with his first show to the last...I'd watch'm all.
Ok. I'm not crazy. Dave really was a lot more fun back then. It had something to do with both him and the audience feeling like something crazy, or dangerous to our ideas about tv was transpiring before our eyes. CBS was the kiss of death, and his heart condition changed something about the mood of the show as well. Hate to sound pessimistic, I loved the show as much as anybody. Had the gray "Late Night" sweatshirt with yellow lettering. We made our own top 10 lists all the time. etc. Thank goodness there are so many Dave vids on YT now !!
Kind of like SNL's early years. Some incredibly good bits, some unbelievably bad bits. As shows mature and the payroll goes up, the producers and writers become more consistent (and more interested in keeping their jobs), but that often takes away both the highs and the lows.
The fan trick actually isn't that dangerous. His tongue touches the flat side of the fan blades first, as they are angled down on the right hand side of the fan while it goes clockwise. He's really just using his tongue as a brake. It would only be a problem if he used the other side of the fan, where his tongue would hit the edge of the fan blades first, which would definitely injure the tongue.
I watched a recording of this the morning after it aired. I went to high school that day, and I could not stop laughing. Everyone thought I had smoked out at breakfast.
I have this one on tape somewhere. I often drag it out to show my friends for a good long laugh. They think I'm nuts like him! Hey! Now I can just pull out the ol' iPad! Let the good times roll!

I remember when this was first broadcast!
The only time I've ever seen Dave totally amazement-stricken on the show.
The pencil guy looked like Matt Damon.
Braselton94 totally
Partially.
Matt Damon with a slice of Tom Brady

It's only natural to see a comedian peak in the first decade and then slow down. Nobody can keep up the highs all the time. It's a Sisyphean struggle

Even Letterman at his worst (that last 10 years) was vastly better than any of the lames who now do late-night.
I meant on ones on broadcast TV. NBC,ABC, or CBS.
@r385671 lol.Kimmel's A Bitch!
The fan blades are moving slower close to the center than further out. I'm only pointing that out so people can argue with me.

Saw this one the night it came on. Awesome.lol
He just hinted the ladies what that tongue can do 😛
That last guy. "No...it's great". Lol.
Ok, reverse the fan's rotation and try again.
Or try it from the front of the fan instead of the back.
If anyone knows where that first guy is please show this video to his kids if he has any
Edit: and the last guy
Me too. Dave probably does too - he was nervous.
Dave is really witty
haha he did a hi mom in the end.
Scott tried this one too many times into the 90s. His girlfriend left him the next day

Holy BatCat Robin!!
Back when he was funny
I laughed my ass off at

What's going on with Dave's coat it looks way to long, was that the style back then?
Dave knows nothing about Fashion and used to wear double breasted suits...
Preesi OnTheNet Those were in style back then.
wow pencil guy stinks XD
A middler, 160
Fake! While he has your attention on the fan and his tongue, he flips the fan switch off.
No you idiot he put his tongue on the flat part of the blades causing it to stop
Boy are you stupid, Hunter Mann. This wasn't a magic show. He really did stop the blades with his tongue.
And then flips it back on according to your blasphemous accusation?
