Hi Ted, Some great tips there. I also pop my blisters to dry them out. I know a lot of nursers and doctors will say don't pop them as they may get infected but I have never had an infected blisters. Taping would definitely recommend in prep as well as power to keep them dry.
Footwear, socks and breaking in are all very important.
I would suggest different lacing up of your boots also, this also depends on the boots and where you're hiking. Personally I have very narrow feet and have to tie my laces really tight to prevent blisters. Also select the appropriate boots/shoes for the weather and conditions of the hike. On a hot day you don't need to be wearing big hiking boots which would cause your feet to sweat.
Also don't ignore the feeling of a blister starting or any rubbing in your boots. Stop and take care of it sooner rather than later.
    Happy trails.

Great tips Ted, I did a misstanke this summer on my mountain trekking, I took to old shoes from my shell and asumed that they should be as good as before... got blisters on my left heal, compeeded it and continued. Was pretty ugly when I was back from the hike. But now it's good again and i'm wiser...

In addition to your tips, I clean the area around the blister with handsanitizer before I put a hole in it. When its drained, I put a regular bandaid on it, that can drain a little, and still let some air in. And then the injinji socks back on. That works pretty great for me 😊

I use to suffer bad from blisters. The best tip from me is wearing two socks or a dedicated blister sock , Regatta do one . I use them regularly now . Two thin pairs worn together is great . I wear Meindl Bhutans , had Scarpa before those . Scarpa were good , Bhutans are like 5star , top level comfort. Half size bigger than normal is best for me . Changing socks when you feel it . I need ankle support so again Bhutans . Great video yet again 🇮🇪

    Hello and new subscriber.
On my journeys everything has happened to me.
Of course, blisters are one of those problems to avoid, but when they happen they must be remedied as soon as possible.
There goes my advice from when I was doing triathlon until now in mountaineering.
Prick it with a needle and thread, rather go through them, cut the entry and exit ends of the thread and leave it inside the blister with a centimeter protruding on each side. This will cause all of the internal liquid to evaporate.
Disinfect with Betadine, cover with a dressing and continue walking.
It works for me during years and until now it does.
    Greetings 👍

Good to see a video again!! Hope your pinky fingers is getting there now... As for shoes, I find buying shoes - be it daily shoes or for hiking - very frustrating as it is only after a couple of hours or even days of really using them when you find out they just don't fit really well. And the of course it is too late to return them. I have wide feet as well and that tends to be problematic at times. It has happened more than once where I basically had to throw out a almost new pair of shoes. Whenever I find a day-to-day pair that works, I tend to try to buy another pair of that exact model and stock them up for when the first pair needs replacing.

Did my first hike (3 days) in Skuleskogen this summer and I used a pair of definitely not hiking suitable Timberland boots. Somehow I didn’t get any blisters, but I also used thick merino socks and regular (cotton!) socks as liners, was sweaty but saved my feet. Now I have chonky Meindls and real merino liners for future hikes lol.

We live we learn! Of course all of this also depends on how heavy your pack is, how experienced you are, weather and so much more!

@@TedWeirum As a noob hiker it was amazing! We went on the most rugged west to east route so we gained and lost elevation quite frequently and the trails are 90% rocks and roots but the weather was great so I had a very good time. Fantastic views near the coast and even stumbled on to a cave and Skuleskrevan. The cabins we stayed (and passed) at were very nice, the only drawback is that the park is not that big so you can hike most of it if you’re quick. During the off-season we only met a couple of hikers (80% dayhikers).

    • @TedWeirum

Great question! Trail runners are lighter no doubt, but they don’t last very long when you walk like that. The people I met who used them had to change around the mid point, that didn’t sound as a good idea for me.

Hi Ted. Is that the Abisko Midsummer Jacket? I have the pants, how do you like it vs. Abisko Lite Trekking Jacket, which is probably more of a spring/fall light jacket.
I agree, taking breaks to avoid your foot getting to the blister point is key. I love to stop at a stream for a 5-10 min soak, which keeps foot swelling down and keeps the feet feeling strong. 5 min to dry out in the sun and you're ready to go.
Have you ever tried "Darn Tough" merino socks from Vermont, USA?
Have you tried using "Leukotape" over hotspots before they blister? I carry several pre-cut strips in my first aid kit, suitable to cover toes, heels, achilles tendons etc, and my victim's mouth. Oh, wait, forget that last one.

Whats yours and the comment fields thoughts on Barefoot hiking boots.
    Any experiences?
I myself like to move easily in nature and the flexibility that barefoot shoes provide.
But have no experience of longer hiking with heavier packs.
Tack för trevliga videos/ Fellow friluffsare från Blekinge 🙂

I am curious about them too. I wear barefoot shoes in my daily life quite a lot and they are very comfortable. I have no issues walking for 10+ km in cities. My feet get tired but don't hurt (if that makes sense). I have some barefoot sandals as camp shoes, but with those I noticed that thin soles can be too thin when walking on sharp rocks. I wonder if the barefoot boots are comfortable in the mountains and like you say with a heavy pack on your back.
Oh and toe socks are awesome for hiking. Bit fiddly to put on. But so comfortable in the long run.

    • @ilianto

      Hej!
I’ve done some hiking in my Luna sandals, so far it’s been great! BUT, it will take some time for your feet and legs to adjust if you come from wearing sneakers and boots, i use my sandals pretty much everyday in order to get my feet and legs back to how they’re supposed to be!
Slow progression is the way forward here!

    • @TedWeirum

This is something I’m definitely going to explore more, it’s also down to where you are hiking, in the mountains it can be very wet and muddy followed by snow and sharp rocks so in those cases you might not want to use sandals.
