When you run jetskis off a hose. Never turn the water on prior to running the engine. Pressure from the engine ensures the water runs the correct way. When you turn the water on first, it may back flow through the exhaust into the cylinders.

As many had said start the ski then the hose! In the fall of 2001 I bought a almost new 01 yamaha wave runner from a boat dealership that had taken the ski in on trade. I had them winterize and store it for me and when I picked it up in the spring I took it straight home and tried to start it in the driveway, when I did it basically tore all the teeth off the flywheel because their tech had hydro locked the motor! I never even got to ride that ski, they fixed it and I sold it!

    Joe,
When you run both a Sea-Doo or a Polaris on a hoes it is very important that you first start the engine and then turn on the water. When you are finished it is the opposite. Turn off the water then blip the throttle a few times and turn off the engine. The incoming cooling hose from the jet pump has a few tees in it and part of the water gets pumped into the exhaust system. There is the potential of filling it up to the point where you can get water in the engine through an open exhaust port if you flood it with water. (Through the exhaust system) It can't happen if the engine is running first. And vice versa when you shut it off when you're done.

It's more about the water pressure from the hose pushing water into cylinder through water jackets, than back flowing from exhaust. While that is possible, the compression of the engine keeps water from entering through jackets while it's running. It doesn't happen often, but there is the chance it could so always better to start engine, turn on hose, tar off hose, kill engine. cheers

There are all kinds of little tricks to these watercraft too. Like, where you found the broken clamp that connects the coupler between the pipe and the waterbox is one example. Also, the waterbox rides on little baby rubber bumpers in a cradle and over the years sometimes those get out of position or degraded and the water box can rub on the standoffs with the metal standoffs and put little holes in the water box. You could also have a leak somewhere else in the exhaust system. Definitely always check for that type of stuff… Internal exhaust leaks. Sometimes you can actually get a pinhole in one of the waterlines and it will mist water and the engine will try to breathe that in and it will run like crap as well. All kinds of great stuff to look for on a watercraft. Lol. Nice job.

btw any motorcycle fuel pump with the right size inlet outlet on it works for this ski... we used one for a yamaha r6 just a rubber hose to it. (has to be a fuel injected bike or somthing with 50psi and use a external regulator to drop it down.. )

That is a beautiful triple two-stroke. Also, on 2 strokes the exhaust is probably more important than your intake. An exhaust leak often makes them un-tunable, especially in a water injected 2 stroke exhaust manifold, where the amount of water put, changes the way the manifold performs. The water changes the manifolds tune like slapping on a bigger 2 stroke pipe. You could be tuned for torque, horsepower what have you. There are many forums out there that often have great alternative replacement options for discontinued oem parts.

@@GordgonzolaIsMyBottombitch you obviously have no clue what I'm talking about. The boat I am referring to had the same pump and motor as a lot of the Yamaha jet skis. 3 cylinder 120hp motor. But because of the loss of hp eaten up by the pump it was considered a 90hp. The only difference was it was inboard and the pump bolted to the bottom of the motor instead of a like a jet ski where the motir is under the seat, shaft runs to the pump in the back. The newer jet skis have a charge port on the back of the unit. Older ones you have a nipple on the pump, just like I was explaining my boat had. I looked it up. So they ARE the same. Always remember to start the motor, then turn the water on. Turn motor off, then shut off the hose. If you really don't know what ppl are talking about you should just read and learn instead of assuming you are smarter than you actually are.

The kit takes out the butterfly choke and replaces with primer nozzles. Kit is less than $20.

@@haydenrightmyer polaris wear rings are usually ok. They aren't plastic like sea doo. Of the impeller isn't in spec with the wear ring you send the impeller in to get material added.

Not very good stainless looks rusty where it broke, maybe a large plastic zip tie would do it?

How was the exhaust leak causing it to run bad? Is it because the intake was sucking up the exhaust?

That fuel pump is exactly like a Dodge Ram fuel pump from the mid 90s. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the very same pump as a Dodge truck.

I assume I’m not the first to say this but don’t turn the hose on until engine is running on pwc’s. Outboards and I/o’s need water to start to not hurt impeller with a dry start
