- Hands up if you suddenly remember watching this as a child in elementary school (a like will suffice)
Many years ago my I saw this film in the 1st grade of elementary school. My teacher projected it from a 16mm print if memory serves. One thing I can recall distinctly, is how emotionally she (the teacher) was driven to tears. There was a poignant resonance from the Hollies song "He Ain't Heavy" which evoked my empathy. Now many years later to have stumbled upon this by happenstance and from obscurity, it touched my heart and draws a river of tears from an overwhelming nostalgia and sympathy.

Do they still play this in schools? I hope so! I'm a child of immigrants and one of my earliest memories is watching this video in Grade 1 and running laps as our entire school participated in the Terry Fox Run that September (and for many years afterwards). I'm 35 now and his story stays with me...such a brave young man! We don't see enough stories like his these days.
Yes, they do! I left high school a few years ago and it's still done every year. Every year there is a Terry Fox Walk for cancer research in the autumn, from elementary to high school.
I show it every year to my jr high homeroom...I first saw it in Grade 6 which was 1992
I don’t remember specific videos, but I was in elementary in the 90’s and we always had a day where we watched a video about him and then did the run. It was one of my fav days of the schoo year. Raising money for cancer
The government and cancer research agencies have taken the spotlight to the current day for the most recent documentary. Discussion on current influence then actually talk about his sacrifices that this shows are of his own, family, and friends are not easy which is hard to digest rather then spotlighting that everything is peachy and death is not on the table but rather outlook on cancer to today is better. Yet it's probably similar outlook today with anyone who has similar cancer with not early detection.
The story shown is about perseverance, self discipline, ones purpose and not giving up til you know it's up, being able to feel sympathy to someone who you never knew before or didn't knowing their struggles, Money talks with causes, legacies are only impactful if you know the extent of its impossibilities from the beginning: all is kind of lost in the current documentaries.
As a teacher in Ontario I got to tell you that he is widely celebrated in our schools and it’s one of the most emotional days when we play his story. He resonates at a whole new level.
Honestly, the older I get, the more incredible Terry Fox is to me. He walked more on this journey than I have in a lifetime. He did it before the convenience and luxuries we have today. His shoes were horrible. His prosthetic was horrible. Not to mention he did it while sick. I don't think people truly comprehend how incredible this fete truly was.
Heartbreaking but utterly inspirational. I don't think a better Canadian, a better role model, a better person could exist.
His legacy lives on, his story inspires, he makes me extremely proud to be a Canadian.
I first watched this video in the late 80s, when I was in Middle School. It was shown several times on our community access channel in Winnipeg. Terry was born in Winnipeg, and his family relocated to BC when he was 8 years old. This was one of the most inspirational, and yet tragic documentaries I have ever seen. This must have been completed shortly before Terry passed away.
Sadly, the boy that Terry met in Northern Ontario (who also had cancer) that he spoke highly of, also passed away from cancer in August 1981, just two months after Terry did.
Some years ago there was a contest or question as to who was the greatest Canadian. Terry Fox IMO is light years ahead of the 2nd place finisher. He IS the greatest period. Not a sports hero, not a politician, not a doctor, not a scientist. Fox was a man who was not paid - not doing his job - he was a man who was in pain, dying and on one leg did something amazing than few to nobody ever does on two legs. He is a legend and rightfully so. I wish I could have had the honour of meeting him.
Terry Fox will always be with me he is a real hero I never forget watching him daily on TV. He is what Real Hero are made of. He is Captain Canada
I'm not sure there is anyone who grew up in Canada after his run that can hear "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" without thinking of Terry.
Terry Fox was one of MANY courageous, resilient, tenacious, and determined individuals. Fortunately, such people have lived on ALL of the six regularly inhabited continents. In a Finnish Christian magazine that was published in 1981 I read the claim that he was a born-again Christian. Hopefully that is true! Have a wonderful, blessed, and positively memorable Easter 2024!

I live blocks from where he grew up and for my entire life Terry Fox has been a near mythical source of inspiration. The world grew richer in every measure while he walked among us. We should all strive to be the kind of man Terry would be proud of.

Four years later since you posted your comment, I'll say, I met Terry dirt biking in the Maryhill gravel pit( you must know the gravel pit living in PoCo) I met him when he was training for his fundraiser, and humble and selfless as he was, never mentioned once, what he was doing it for. That's our PoCo boy for ya! Good people! I still miss my friend, and his name is Terry 👍 From a former PoCo boy, Cheers to ya!
Saw this when i was about 12 or 13. Now 55 and it has stayed with me ever since. What i didn't appreciate at the time was how young he was. Truly courageous. Still running.
My cousin was diagnosed with this exact same cancer in October of 1988 , he was 17 years old. I was the same age. It was a hellacious fight, he died of it in July of 89. He was 18. Thanks Terry for never ending source of courage

Remember that like it was yesterday i was on my way to Ottawa area going up hiway 7 seen him around elm tree road near kaladar ont very brave man he did good not good awesome walking across Canada wile he was sick my mom is in hospital as we speak dr said today she has one or two days at most this 2020 has been a bad year poor man he did awesome I will never forget seeing him walking and not long later I seen him going up hiway 2 in oshawa on I was young then now I’m 61 and life is precious brave man to run across Canada with one leg RIP terry fox my maw will be up ther soon with all the cancer victims and yes this is one brave man a hero glad he liked New Brunswick my place of birth 😇😇😇😇😇
40 years have gone by and the legacy of Terry Fox still lives on. A true Canadian hero like him will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace and God bless him.

I just drove from Alberta to New Brunswick and it was really moving to see the Terry Fox lookout, see the road where he ran and changed the world. I love this soul and will always look up to him. Much love Terry, you made Canada a better place and helped shape our heart.

I saw this program when it aired as part of the coverage when Terry passed. I remember how I had to fight to keep myself from crying. More than 40 years later, the mention of Terry's name still resonates with me, and I still get that lump in my throat and my eyes well up. It never fails. He will always be a Canadian Icon. We will always be proud of Terry Fox and what he means, not only to Canadians, but to anybody who is fighting this disease just as bravely as he did.
When people think of great athletic achievements this is always left off of the list. Some ultra runners couldn’t do what terry did with two legs and healthy. What a legend.
But they could.🤷♂️

he was really amazing. I remember being in high school and following his adventures cross country.
Terry is a world hero. I am in my forties and never in my life have I learned about such a selfless, determined, plight of an individual to help others. Amazing. I am not religious, but if I were to imagine a second coming, I imagine it as Terry, whom came to remind us that no one is perfect, but every problem can be overcome and life lived to its fullest no matter anyones circumstance. Terry did exactly what he wanted to and planned on doing, all they way up to the minute he literally could not do it anymore.
“& sometimes I wonder if what I’m doing is worth it, if it has meaning” little did he know that decades later every school in Quebec would do the Terry Fox run every year .

I've driven across Canada, seen where he ran, it's a helluva stretch, then we stopped in at Thunder Bay to the memorial. Even in winter people will be there.
Thank-you for sharing this video. Terry Fox is my hero, and I am so grateful to have been able share his story with my son. When I was a kid, I don't think I was able to fully understand the immensity of what he did for us all. After my own battle with cancer, at age 14, I finally got it, and I will never forget it. Thank-you, Terry. Bless your beautiful soul.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for finding this and sharing it. I still remember the day in fourth grade when we watched this, and my teachers were also in tears. Terry was the first great inspiration of my life. And forever since, when I hear that song, I think of Terry.

I watched this in gym class in elementary school
This is remarkable, when I was 7 years old I was on a trip to Newfoundland I remember we had lobster on the beach! I would like to go back there, my father Eric Grandy is from there apparently he just had a stoke He smoked for many years, now he's 80 years old, thank you Terry your so inspirational!

@@DVDuring without linking an account, I was able to turn on restricted mode on UA-cam on the PS3 they usually watch it on. Making their own account was too limiting for their age (UA-cam kids content for 9&7).
I turned on restricted mode on my own account and it hid this video from me as well.
I played around to find out where they draw the line and was able to watch some pretty PG war videos, cursing, violence, etc. with the setting enabled. Maybe it's a mistake with UA-cam and they've accidentally flagged this video?

He wasn't the first to attempt to run across the country. Sadly though, he didn't manage to beat it. Makes you wonder what went wrong aside from the obvious. Whether or not an onsite doctor would've been of any benefit is anyone's guess
He's collecting a few bucks along his run ... that's tough. Given during this time in Canada, Canada was pretty much a poor country, so getting people to part way with just 1 Canadian Dollar is going to be hard, and Terry wanted to raise 24 million dollars (dollar per canadian).
