  • We get the question a lot... Should I get a digital piano or a keyboard? Are all digital pianos are keyboards but not all keyboards are digital pianos?
A lot of people think of something portable when they think of a keyboard and more of a furniture-type instrument when thinking of a digital piano. While this can be generally true, there is a lot more for Pat and Ted to unpack while answering the question... What are the differences between a keyboard and a digital piano? #Keyboard #DigitalPiano #KeyboardVsDigitalPiano #Piano

i appreciate your effort to make a video but honestly when someone clicks a video to see there must be direct explanation of the differences not discussion around and around. At least most people choose a video to watch and they want the least words to describe the differences. I said least in order to correctly explain. The title must be rename to "Keyboard and digital pianos discussion"

So much pointless talking. I just wanted to know the differences between the two...sorry for being honest.

I was hoping to really hear the differences from an expert. But the host didn’t really let the guest talk… pity.

TLDW (Too Long Didn't Watch) version:
Pianos are a subset of Keyboards!
And it goes without saying really:
Some pianos and keyboards have more features than others (caveat emptor).

All they do is say that all digital pianos are keyboards, but not the other way around, and say that the differences are really confusing without meaningfully discussing them in detail. Apparently the differences were too confusing for them to address.

My son is learning keyboard and now moving to Piano. I tried to understand the difference here and totally got lost in all the stuff being said. I'm growing old. :(

it really shows how much effort you're trying to help your son by trying to understand the difference, and he probably appreciates that :)

Get a digital it's more like a piano. Keyboards are more fun though because of all the features but for real classical training a digital is what you want. Also weighted action keyboards cost a lot and you need speakers. Most digital have those built in. There a arranger keyboards that have all this but are very complex to work

Action means nothing to me, acoustic pianos, digital pianos, portable keyboards, organs, I love to play all of them

Besides the speakers and speaker quality, both digital/keyboard pianos seem like a bit of a ripoff in a sense (especially keyboards).. I own a Casio keyboard (Casio WK-6600), which I spent over 400$ on. Yet I'm able to get more realistic/higher quality piano sounds from the piano app on my smartphone.. I think that's solid proof that even a 150-200$ keyboard could sound better than it does, but can't because you can't upgrade the sound files on it. I'd bet that a 150-200$ keyboard could be modified to sound like a thousand dollar digital piano, with one exception. If the quality of the sound from the thousand dollar digital piano came from the quality soundboard inside, that wouldn't be so easy to replicate, but if it comes down to the sound that plays out of the speakers, then the variance in prices makes no logical sense outside of a marketing standpoint (or perhaps materials, wood/ivory vs plastic).
Just a theory though, some here know far more about pianos than I.

no, you're actually making a really good point... i wonder if thats the case and its a massive marketing scam

@@misakit.4110 wouldn't surprise me.. just look at what they're doing with those printer ink cartridges. There's a video somewhere on UA-cam about it, but they're basically charging 60$ plus for 25 cents worth of materials.

Still wondering what the benefit is from a kawai ca99 over a kawai mp11se? sound? Feel?

I'm a pianist but have only owned keyboards thus far. I already have a keyboard for my DAW needs. I really want an upright to get back into playing and taking my RCM test. I can only afford a digital piano but would love to pay installments for an upright. Any suggestions?

    Digital piano vs keyboards
Get a digital if you want an acoustic piano but dont want the hassle of tuning and environment control and maybe portability.
Get a keyboard if you want a synth or workstation. You can get different number of keys and action aka weighted semi weighted and synth action like say a nord.

I already have an acoustic and a keyboard but need a second (digital) piano. I guess it's like some of the women I saw in New York, the more you spend, the better the feel. None of them sound like acoustic, the real deal, and there is always something a bit better for more money. I may go for a HP704 or CN39 but then there is the CLP745.
