  • How To Install Wetsuit Pockets... Whaaaat?! A quick tips video actually UNDER 5 MINUTES!!!! 2022 is off to a banger!
    I made this video to solve my own problem. I go through TecBnB shorts like crazy. Two pairs a year. ~$200 per pair. Insane. To break the cycle, I'm installing pockets straight onto my wetsuits... 5mm and 3mm. Much cheaper and just as efficient.
    In this video, I'm breaking down step-by-step how to go about installing glue-on thigh pockets to your wetsuit.
    Here are the products featured in this video:

    James any feedback regarding the longevity of the glued on pockets?

    I have cargo pants I wear over the top, cheaper, and acts as an abrasion guard for work dives. Duluth Trading firehose pants work a treat, hard wearing, but kinda expensive when not on half off sales.

    That's really a great idea. I'm not a technical diver but I'm going to put pockets on my wet suits. Thank you

    This looks like exactly the solution I've been looking for. It would be great to get an update once you've started using them as far as durability and usability are concerned.

    ProTip™: Run a nice bead around the edge of the pocket afterwards, as it can be seen in your last clip that the edge (which probably receives the most wear and tear) is already coming loose.

    This exact conversation came up with my wife as after our second trip she now wants to convert to a true backplate and wing BCD. The Aqualung she has just has too much padding, and danglie stuff in it by design. Her only concern was where to store her few accessories. I’d considered tec shorts, but glad I saw this first because they ARE expensive. I was considering just wearing regular cargo shorts with additional pocket Velcro for like $12. 😂

    I have been doing this for years, tech shorts never made sense to me. I use either a plastic putty knife or an acid brush, which you can at local hardware store. I find these cleaner and more accurate and still disposable. Soft weights work well to distribute weighting and making sure each area has weight pressing down, pile more on top. Take your time. PS - ain't know way you are transferring pockets once glued onto a suit, just get new ones.

    I have these pockets on a 3mm. They work great. But I did find them quite smaller than the ones on the Apeks tec shorts...

    Nice Tip. I'd rather have stuff in pockets than clipped off in various places on my harness. I got a pocket and used snaps like from a boat cover to attach it to my suit. It worked well for several shore dives then I lost the pocket and contents (fortunately just an inexpensive slate) to the abyss when I did a boat entry that was rather high up. I have bought a new one and now am trying a combination of snaps and Velcro though I probably should have just committed to gluing the thing directly to the suit.

    Nice video, as always! two questions though:
    1) do you see any contraindications for the wetsuit?
    2) would you recommend this procedure also on a neoprene dry suit?

    Make your own tech shorts, I glued some light monkey pockets on an old highland pocket shorts (cut the old small pockets off) and the durability has been much much better, tons of dives and do not look to be wearing out anytime soon!

    Great information as usual James! I just ordered a wet suit (I'm a big guy like you) at Wet Wear in Hallandale Beach. They are putting a pocket on for me. Now if I decide I want a second one, I know how to do it myself.
    If the pockets wear out before the suit, it there a way to remove them without damaging the wetsuit?

    You can also have that glue reinforced with some stitching and they’re never coming off. Extra glue over the stiticing on the inside. I have an O’Neil suit with Halcyon pockets I inherited and they look like they belong there.

    Easier to have the wet suit on a cylinder, glue the pocket, and have a strap around to hold it tightly in position. Better then a led wieght

    James - I’m really curious about how this affects donning and doffing the suit. Seems like the legs would be stiff and prevent turning it inside out. Thanks for sharing your insights.

      James, I too would love to hear how these have worked out so far.

  • @bloodymarvelous4790
    @bloodymarvelous4790 2 роки тому

    But what if the pockets don't hold up. Do you need to get a new wetsuit since you glued these pockets which are now unusable to a wetsuit which would still work?
    I'm guessing, if both pockets are made of similar neoprene, they'll last the same amount of time. Except the shorts you can throw out and get new ones, where as the pockets are married to the suit forever.

    Is there no requirement to sew the edges? Or are adhesives so much better today?
    I'm thinking back to when my Dad made us wetsuits from kits in the 70s. Do you remember the ones with the beaver tail that kept the trousers up?

    • @DiversReady
      @DiversReady  2 роки тому

      I do remember the beaver tails! They are actually still popular in the mediterranean. No need to sew the edges, that adhesive is strong and flexible.
