The Worst Old Ship - lyrics
1. The worst old brig that ever did weigh,
Sailed out of Harwich on a windy day.
Waiting for the day, Waiting for the day,
Waiting for the day That we get our pay.
2. She was built in Roman times, Held together with bits of twine.
3. Nothing in the galley-nothing in the hold,
But the skipper's turned in with a bag of gold.
4. Off Orford Ness she sprang a leak, Hear her poor old timbers creak.
5. We pumped our way round Lowestoft Ness,
When the wind backed round to the west-sou'-west.
6. Through the Cockle to Cromer cliff,
Steering like a wagon with a wheel adrift.
7. At the top of the tide the barge did fleet,
When the mate sees a ghost on the tops'l sheet.
8. So away we go and the ghost did steer,
And the cook drank the dregs of the Old man's beer.
9. Into the Humber and up the town, Pump you blighters-pump or drown.
10. Her coal was shot by a Keadby crew,
Her bottom was rotten and it went right through.
11. After all our fears and false alarms,
We all ended up in "The Druid's Arms." - Розваги
Sean is THE shantyman, there is no other substitute that can compare
You're very kind.
I back this entirely
@@ColderBrother98 Thanks!
Absolutely!
One of my favorites from Assassin's Creed! I love hearing you sing them more melodically. Shanty of the Week is always the best way to start a Tuesday 😊
I'm glad you like it. Yes, I like Tuesdays as well.
@@SeanDagher is it because you're waiting for your tuesday pay?
I got a new kitten on Saturday and I named him Maui! I'm trying to teach him shanties and this will be his first one. He doesn't seem to cooperate at the moment but I'm sure he'll be a great shantycat one day.
Maui meowy!
You have to teach him Rollin' Down to Maui or Sela Moku (it's a Hawaiian Shanty by Rev. Dennis Kamakahi)
@@sandramorey2529 that's actually what I've named him after ❤
I am excited to see that the "Shanty Shack" stuck. Amazing work, as always, already can't wait for the next one.
Thanks Gabriel, and thanks for the coinage. I wanted to go back through the comments to credit the person but ran out of time. I'll put it in the description now.
Oh I never even considered "credit" for it.. I am just genuinely happy to have been able to contribute with at least something to your creations.
"I was wearing the best hat here"
gave me a good laugh, cheers!
And it was true!
I didnt recognize this one from title alone but then i realized this is one of my favorites from black flag it always stayed in the back of my head
It is that kind of song.
When ships were made of wood, men were made of steel - someone
- someone wise
I didn’t even realize you were the guy from black flag. That’s so cool
One of them. There were a bunch of us who took turns singing the leads.
Oof! I couldn't imagine pumping that old ship, or any for that matter. You'd need the whole crew going in perfect sync! Even still, it'd take a long time to get a big ship moving in no wind. Maybe that's one reason why shanties had so many verses!
That's exactly why the pumping and capstan songs have so many verses.
One of my favorites. Awesome shanty.
Mine too! Great tune.
This was always my favorite song from Black Flag. I’m glad to have found this!
This was one of the most fun ones to sing. Both in Black Flag and here.
"The Druid's Arms" sounds like a cool place--where characters in a fantasy novel or in a game of Dungeons and Dragons might meet.
Yes!! I'd like to be there for the lock-in.
this video is officialy a year old... wow, time flies.
and this comment is officially 7 months old. without the typo this time.
Was that a cutlass umbrella or am I seeing things haha. Great shanty though and the hat changing shanty shack special what an episode!!!
That WAS a cutlass umbrella! I'm glad someone noticed it.
I love how you released this at the end of the month. When all of us are all indeed waiting for the day, waiting for the day, waiting for the day when we get our pay!
Perfect timing.
I got soooooo excited being a Lowestoft Lad. Always special when it is remembered for its Naval history.
Lovely voice as always Sean.
Thanks! Nice to hear from someone from Lowestoft.
I Love your videos makes may day better im from brazil
Thanks Joao. Hello to Brazil.
I sing this one at work a lot.
Believe me it's fitting
Awesome rendition! I know you probably can't read any more of these kinds of comment, but this was always my favorite shanty in AC 4. Thanks for all your work, Seán!
I can read comments like that all day long. This one really stuck with me from AC.
A while ago I tracked the locations the worst old ship went. According to the Black Flag lyrics it went backwards at one point, so probably Black Flag did not get the correct order.
I find that this shanty gets in my head the easiest. Once its in there, it sure as hell ain't coming out. Love this slightly spiritual rendition though, sounds like how a warm blanket feels.
I have the same experience with this song. Hard to get it out of the old head.
Yay, one of my favs!
Mine too!
I love the array of hats that you showed off! They’re perfect for the rainy weather!
Very.
I live within 10 minutes of the east coast of Lincolnshire. The ship would've gone within 20 miles of my home on its way north from Cromer.
I thought I saw you on the way by.
Listening to this shanty on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. All I need now is a bully crew and a sound sloop
Sounds like you've got a pretty good spot for shanty singing.
Aye, and a good spot for hornpipes, jigs and reels played on an Irish whistle
Awesome shanty and awesome singing like always.
Thanks!
Sean, this may be a late comment; but this was my absolute favorite song in AC: IV, I'd always be in the mood to hear it, and would often go through them all just to hear this one.
As I got older, I realized just how much more beautiful most of them are. Thank you for what you did for that game, it truly stuck with me.
This was the first shanty I found in Black Flag, ohhhhh the nostalgia!
Brings me back...
@@SeanDagher Same here, mate
You’ve done it Sean. You’ve convinced me to replay Assassin’s Creed Black Flag for the 5th (maybe 6th) time. I love this shanty!
Success.
The back story is a lovely addition so we can know what we are singing about.
Yes. I love that part, too.
Seán is out there facing wind and now rain to bring us location shoots. Dedication!
Changing up the hats was a nice touch 👌
The sacrifice...
Interesting version! I know a song with the same theme of a shoddy ship and the same chorus called the Humber Belle (as performed by Lincolnshire artist Liam Robinson)
Ooh! Interesting. I'll look it up. It would be surprising if they weren't related songs.
@@SeanDagher it's on Spotify! Its a very dancey version, Liam and his band play English (mainly Lincolnshire) folk music, but there is a lot of maritime influence, of course.
Im liking the change up with the editing. The black and white shots of you singing the refrains makes me feel like I'm watching a music video!
This one was actually directed by Sofia Coppola.
Mr Dagher I am currently working at oceangoing merchant ship and when it is suitable I listen your shanties and mumble a bit when I work , you are giving life to thousand year old tradition . By the way best moustache ever
I am extremely happy to hear that you sing (or mumble) these songs while at sea. YOU are giving life to a thousand year old tradition.
i enjoyed so much thanks you !!!!
You're welcome. I'm glad you did.
Just discovered your channel because I've been belting out shanties to myself all day and figured I'd give my own pipes a short rest. 10/10, definitely subscribing.
Much love from British Columbia~
Hello BC! I'm glad you found us here. I love to hear about people singing (belting).
That intro almost got me crying!! it's very rainy for me too! Love the hat also.
Thanks isao.
That moustache thou 😂😂
Right?
@@SeanDagher it's amazing, also love your work. Used to listen to all the assassin's creed black flag songs and the one that stood out to me was william taylor, kept playing it on repeat for days then eventually search you up and now listening to your sotw songs. Brought the volume 4 album as there are a few songs 8 like in that one such as worst old ship, maid of Amsterdam, and homeward bound. Keep doing what your doing 😊
loving your videos , fantastic work !
Thanks W.
This is awesome. I look forward to these videos every Tuesday now. Love the hats, Sean!
Thanks! I like Tuesdays as well.
I get so much enjoyment from your music. Thank you!
It's my pleasure. I get enjoyment from it too!
Amazing
Thanks
One of my favorite shanties, thanks for this Sean!
Mine too. You're welcome.
Sing of the jackdaw boys!
Loved the shanty Sean and also the hats!!
Thanks J!
i like this one a lot
Thanks. Me too.
I think Any hat would go just fine with this mighty moustache.
Thanks Abdel.
Wonderful tune again mister, thx for sharing it once more.
My pleasure.
Nah man you're the best at this hahahah
The thing I love about this song os it mentions the humber, my home town of hull and in some versions, actual pubs ive been too
That is amazing. The only thing better than singing about a pub you're in is drinking in a pub you're singing about.
I've been waiting for this day.
Wait no longer.
It , sure is a great hat !
It really is.
Well done
Thanks
Great Shanty. You sang it very good, Master. Good Day, Maties. ❤️
Thanks Matej!
good video
Thanks!
I see we are in a roll of bad luck when filming on new locations, huh?
Yes, but I think the failures are as good as the successes.
I do hope that you will re-run the best hat? Twould be a shame if we were to miss it altogether.
In time.
peaceful
Ω
It's Tuesday again, you know what that means????
Shanty time ❤️❤️❤️
Shanty Time!
Just played this for the 2 year old and his three teen siblings who are here. They laughed at all your jokes. Obviously well educated children. 😉
Children of taste and culture!
so cool 😎😎😎❤️❤️ i love you my sir 💞
Same.
Loved the shanty and the hats of course! May I ask what is that red and black thing swinging in the background? Its kinda hypnotising.
That was the Red Plastic Alto Trombone. The P-bone.
@@SeanDagher Snazzy
I was wondering the same thing.
This shanty has a ghost in it and the trombone is mysteriously swinging in the background... Coincidence?
@@Kelly_Grey Aye, Maybe?
Another amazing shantie!
Ah! Sorry for the lack of response. I read it. I'll reply with a postal address. Actually, can you send it again?
@@SeanDagher No problem at all, i resent the email, so when ever you have a free moment! Thank you for your time! :D
Ahoy! I’ve done, again, that game that have to me the best soundtrack of all time… yes, AC Black Flag 🏴☠️ I know Mr Dagger that you already know about, but I have to say: your shanties will be with us forever⚓️
Thanks Kevin. That nice to hear.
I know it's not a real shanty but could you sing the irish rover? I love the shanty of the week and I would love to hear this song.
I'll put it on the tavern song list.
Thank you very much😊

?
Have you done bully in the alley? If not please do it.
Yes. SOTW #4.
Oh damn,50 seconds ago?Is that a record?
Where have you been all these seconds.
@@SeanDagher Mostly perusing other channels and forgot this one existed =/
It's about the time as I've changed the job so now I am waiting for the day when I get my first pay. :)
I hope you enjoy the new job and that the pay comes through in the end.
@@SeanDagher : I'll keep singing chorus to make sure! :)
Sean does your umbrella have a cutlass handguard?
Yes it does. Of course it does.
@@SeanDagher beautiful
where did you get the Cutlass umbrella???
I inherited it from my great-grandfather William Wright, who captained ship in the Baltic sea.
@@SeanDagher nice great to be connected to your heritage in this day and age
Sailors don't fear the rain, get back out there and sing.
They don't. But mics and cameras do, alas.
@@SeanDagher Blast this technology, where are the good old days where all ships were wind powered, every infection was fatal and vojages were years long.
Quick question, what type of shanty is this one?
This one would work for capstan or pumping, but the relatively short verses and refrains make me think it could work for short haul as well.
"The skippers half Dutch and the mates a jew, she was fourteen men too few" this line is always forgotten
o/` The worst old ship that ever did weigh... got their microphone wet by singin' in the rain... o/`
Nice one.
@@SeanDagher Heehee. Next verse needs to be about hats.
