A small tip: The Mooer Blues Crab is the best Blues Breaker type pedal I have ever tried. I'll even say the best overdrive pedal I have ever tried. It is really cheap and sounds better than most of the boutique clones. I highly recommend it to everyone.

JM actually used the bd2 (Keeley mod) during the trio era while he used the blues breaker during the continuum era. IMO they both work for that JM sound.

I had both. Kept BB. The pedal is just fantastic. Chewy and cleans up really well. It brings the guitar in the mix really well. I am glad you put the gain well high. BB really shines on it. And it works great with both single coil or humbucker.

Yes. BluesBreaker. This episode affirms everything I've ever thought about it and the pedals derived from it. It'll never make it on to my gigging board because I just don't find it cuts enough but I will never sell it. And I really needed this episode to make me confident about that decision. Still, it must be said: if, at gunpoint, I was told I could only use one pedal no matter how much music was left in my life, it'd be the BB. Thorpy Peacekeeper a close second. Thanks again, lads.

Just wanted to say I've been watching the show from my parent's TV for the last couple of weeks - where I'm not logged in. That means no premium and I wanted to recognise and thank you for not spamming the video with ads. I know I should expect as much from TPS, but I think it bears worth saying.
A show idea for you: exploring the tone controls on some traditional overdrive pedals. (Especially now you have an actual Bluesbreaker) - watching the show today I think I rediscovered that I've been wrongfully assuming that the tone circuit on the pedal is the same as a guitar tone circuit. OBVIOUSLY thats not the case, especially where you've got 3 band EQ, but, what about singular tone knobs? And the same for amps! Think theres some serious education to be done there.

I always thought that both Boss and Marshall should rebrand these pedals. With the blues you would want something fatter with more gain for sustaining leads, which the blues driver could arguably do better than the blues breaker. The blues breaker is more of a British flavored boost pedal that people use to just barely push their amps and add a bit of personality to their tone.

as a long-time BluesBreaker fan, I am struck at just how fantastic the original pedal sounds with EVERY SINGLE different guitar. That's a very important aspect for me. When I switch guitars, mid-gig, I don't want to need to tweak my overdrive pedals to adjust. That original pedal just kills, no matter which guitar you're putting through it. Very well done test on this one, guys.

  • @GuitarTonePro

An original English Bluesbreaker was my "always on" pedal for years with a Strat into a Mesa Boogie Mk III. Cut a little of the zingy high end, gave a bit more lower mids and just a hair of breakup. Then I got a King of Tone and quickly realized that without the high gain option, setting the KoT to the "boost" setting pretty much matches the tones exactly and with more volume available if desired.
Side note for Mick, if you haven't tried a Mk III in a while try to borrow one. I recently picked one up again and it compares very favorably to my TS-1 in a slightly brighter way and with more gain and volume available when needed. Plugged into a Two-Rock 2x12 it sounds even better with SO many sounds available thanks to it's powerful tone knobs and graphic EQ.

The Keeleys are great, but I hate top mounted Jacks, you have to have special cables and sometimes the power jack has to be angled or straight depending on the closeness of the Jacks! Glad I bought the AT Overdrive, the red one, before they changed to this format. Get a Duke of tone on the show! So Dan can say " yeah, but there is something about my original King of tone" Lol

Great video guys. Imo bd2 is great as a transparent boost, blues breaker for taking a broken up amp into the rich harmonics and feedback, hence the name, pairs well with an am beano boost, great for soloing. They’re all good, to me it’s all amp dependent. But with the bd2, I’d rather have a am modded tubescreamer or prince of tone and for the transparent boost thing OCD all day long.

I have a BD2w and it is a great vertisale pedal . I even use it to get that 80's metal tone . I stack a BD-2w and a Prince of Tone through my signature Fillmore Boogie 50 (jk lol) , and it sounds Metallica'n circa 85-89 . Stacking pedals is a good way to create the tone you are looking for . But the key ingredient IMO is a Boss GE-7 in front . IMO OD/Dist are a snapshot . The EQ pedal gives you more control . IMO before you buy another OD/Dist pedal , buy a quality EQ pedal . The Boss GE-7 is great and affordable .

What I want to have happen is that each item is dialed in to it's best (and maybe even worst) ability at whatever it is that it can do.
I don't care how much this one can sound like that one.....
Put all 10 runners on the track, and then stagger their starting position so they all run side by side to finish pretty much the same. 🙂

I was just saying that, when comparison videos do that make-everything-sound-the-same thing, it doesn't really work for me.
And I do strongly agree with the comment about however many things a pedal might be great at, I'm just going to set it for what I want it to do its best, and I'll likely never touch the knobs again.
If a pedal can do 4 different things, all that I really want, I'll end up with 4 of that pedal, each with the pots frozen in position after 10 years. 🙂

Did a quick look to see. Definitely doesn't appear to be the case. I found one schematic (not sure how authentic) that looked like it is essentially 2 signal paths in parallel. One is based on the tube screamer topology and the other is what appears to be a pair of neve preamp style circuits cascaded one after the other and blended at the end with the TS. I can't be certain how accurate that is...but I can say for sure its not like either the BB or the BD

    • @patcbrink

    • @ThatPedalShow

@@ThatPedalShow Feels like a missed opportunity, given you tried different modes on Keeley and Halcyon pedals. BD2w Custom mode please :) I got my BD2w for £100 secondhand and on balance prefer the Custom mode for low/mid gain and Standard mode for higher gain

The Roger Mayer Voodoo-1 of Michael Landau fame has the same style knobs as a BB and similarly low output. Anyone know if there’s any lineage in the circuits?

Why have a Boss Blues Driver when you can have the Boss OD3, which if I'm not mistaken, was their attempt at improving the Blues Driver... The OD3 must be one of the most underrated pedals of all time.

Yikes, I sold a UK BluesBreaker (and a UK made Guv'nor too) in 2013-ish for peanuts. Arg.
But if I still had 'em .. I'd keep 'em!
The BB sounded just magnificent in the hands of these top fellers ⭐⭐here.

I sold my original BB pedal for a small profit when they were on the rise about 6 years ago and it funded my KoT. So, can't complain.

They all bring something to the table. Depending on your amplification, you'd be hard pressed not to find a setting on any that works for you. The tendencies of your amplifier/driver choice would dictate more as to which you'd choose. Maybe more than the guitar of choice.
