Hi Amy, another you tube channel I follow picked up a alcohol flask with a graphic of an aboriginal guy with the words “drunken injun”, I was not impressed and left a comment stating that, well, the backlash was very depressing, I was told by other watchers to “get over it” that it was very collectable and worth a lot of money. I’m of aboriginal descent and have encountered racism my whole life. I will never stop advocating for my people and I hope some day everyone will understand how we feel. Thanks for being you❤️🇨🇦
I’m sorry, Karyn. That kind of backlash is why I will always take the moment to talk about things like this and advocate for social justice. To the best of my knowledge, I don’t have native blood, but I would be proud if I did. The treatment of indigenous people has been appalling and those who think it’s ok to depict any person from any culture in a negative stereotype is either insensitive and uneducated or racist. Much love to you my friend. 💕
You are Amazing!!!! Loved the Video!! My favorite piece was of those three pieces of glass mixed with wood and metal!! I sure hope you guys have a Great time in Springfield!!! I follow some channels for homesteading and they had their meet-up at the beginning of June. Two couples started this last year and the success of it is phenomenal!! I am excited to see your photos and hear about you and Irfs trip!! I am also proud of Irf wanting to go with and meet up with your reselling friends!!! You two are very Special People! Have a safe drive !!! 🤗🤗♥️♥️👍🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks, Kim! Oh I know! Those little glass trees are so beautiful! 😍 Irf and I are happy to get back out with the camper for a long weekend! We haven’t done that enough this year! 😊 Of course I will take videos and photos to share. 💕 Lots of love to you from us too! ❤️
I'm African American and I am not offended by these types of pieces. I wouldn't buy it or display it , but I think this kind of "art" has a place in a museum where children can see it and know that we will NEVER again be placed in that light again! I recently bought a bag of old wooden figures which included a baby with "pic-a-ninny" hair. I may send it to the museum you mentioned.
I absolutely agree that the artifacts should be preserved to teach. Irf and I have seen a wide range of racist memorabilia. He's said the same thing, that some of it doesn't offend him as much as others do. As a reseller with a UA-cam Channel, I'll take the opportunity to share information anytime I can. =)
I find it very heart warming that you are informing viewers where the memorabilia items can be donated. Displaying them or selling them is simply NOT OK. Here we have the same situation happening with art pieces, photos etc.. that may be offensive about our aboriginal, Metis and Inuit communities.
Hi, Rachel! Ugh! Another viewer friend has aboriginal roots and said that she saw something offensive on another reseller’s channel and when she commented, she got backlash. I think it’s telling too, that my video is low performing, and I’ve lost 5 subs since it aired. 🤔 And that’s ok, I don’t want them watching anyway… not my kind of people.
@@YOSOBOHO Well I applaud you for your courage to publicly approach the subject. Not everyone is ready to face the possible backlash. Knowing you, you most likely approached the situation with grace. You are a classy lady! ;-)
Wonderful video as always, Amy! I almost bought that. Same planter at Lowe’s the other week. Good advice on the racist articles. I agree that should be taken out of circulation.
I collect black memorabilia that is NOT offensive. I share and display these positive images with my students. I have some displayed in my house so that my friends can see positive images.
Hi gorgeous! Fabulous hat! I would have to agree with you and Irf. Throw it in the fire! I love that term: "It hits my dopamine decor"! I'll have to steal that!
Beall’s is a small dept store chain here in Florida. The skirt and stockings are cute. Curious that they ended up in your area. Maybe a snowbird bought them and took them home!
Amy, I am a member of a biracial family as you are. My aunt who was active in the civil rights movement in her locality somehow acquired a copy of “ 4 and 20 Blackbirds. “She kept it because she didn’t want someone who supported the racism of this copy to have it. She died and I took the copy. I gifted it to a local black museum in Grand Rapids. I could have donated it to the Ferris State museum you mentioned, but I just didn’t want it in my house and this was local. I totally understand and appreciate your decision. Thank you and bless you!
Bealls is a sept store here in Florida but have recently expanded up into Georgia and I believe SC. Worden was my moms aunts married name. Her Aunt and Uncle owned Wordens motorcycle shop over on Brown street in Akron, I wonder if this artist is related. And last but not least Lladro is to me what pottery is to you! I have over 60 pieces. I started collecting when I was stationed in Germany back in the 80’s and never stopped.
Hi, Connie! Oh wow!!! What an amazing collection to have! I've been looking at the book! They really made beautiful pieces! 😍 Worden isn't that common of a name, so that may be! =)
Hi Amy! We were at the Hartville Thrift and I picked up same art work by Jennifer Worden! It caught my eye cuz it said Summit Art Space on back, and my Grandson had had some of his art there at one time! I showed it to him, but I didn’t buy it cuz I mostly just looked at things! So glad you bought it! And that you’re keeping it to display in your home!
Hi Amy! You got some amazing deals, for sure😊..I’m in total agreement with you, as to how to deal with the racist piece…they need to be taken out of circulation! Have a great time at the flea market!!❤️
Girl! Did you forget me telling you I was looking for an Anchor Hocking Pagoda just last month? Also I had that Peter Rabbit planter back in the day. It was sold at Bed Bath & Beyond in 1997, it's vintage.
OMG! Is that what you were looking for?! Maybe I had you in the back of my head! lol I honestly didn't know what it was until I Google Lensed it and found the Ahchor Hocking Pagoda box! I will set it aside for you. 💕
I actually saw a clock with the Confederate flag on it on the Goodwill online site. I emailed and they answered right away and took it off the site right away. I was kind of shocked.
Hi. Would you please inform me what was wrong with the wall piece made of measuring sticks. I honestly just wanna know and learn. Because, at least here in Sweden, I see wooden art pieces of African American people all the time. I own a piece or two my self, and all I see is beautiful decor. And why would you burn the rest of it after removing the boy?
In America I am sad to say that racism is very prevalent. And those of us who are fighting against it are especially sensitive about items that can be misconstrued as plus or minus racism. So we may destroy such an item or as I did donate it to a museum. Much of what we do might seem spur of the moment but if it hits us that hard, it hurts. As I indicated in another comment to Amy I am part of a biracial family. I am the white matriarch. In my home I have art representing all of us. But if I ever were to see an Aunt Jemima piece of pottery, I would buy it but rather than display it in my home, it would be donated to a black history museum.
If you visit this link that I included in the information box to the Jim Crow Museum website about anti-black imagery, it may help you understand: jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/antiblack/index.htm The little carved boy was handmade and I will give Ferris State University the option of preserving him. There was also a caricature "Mammy" in the top box. Just a simple, painted piece with no potential value. That's why we decided to destroy it. I hope this helps. Feel free to email me with any additional questions or to send photos of your items. I can tell you if they are anti-black.
Haha! Are you talking about me? I found a cannibal fork last summer! I don't think that's a racist artifact... I think cannibals were equal opportunity feasters. 🤦🏻♀️🤣 Sorry, that made me laugh!
@@YOSOBOHO oh, my goodness. Was it you????? Lol Yeah but, if you were being consumed, would you appreciate that they were equal opportunity offenders? It has got to be a war crime. I understand before the Geneva convention but, has to be universally agreed a crime against humanity, cruel and unusual punishment. ECT., ECT., Glad we can share a laugh! 😂
I’m sorry you are offended, Amy. I believe that it is honestly meant to be folk art not offensive art!! It doesn’t need to be burned. Now if you’ve posted this after the fact, well …, just know that I truly believe it was meant to be Folk art not offensive art! ☺️
I understand that a lot of these artifacts were common in homes especially in the 80s and 90 where there was a resurgence of reproductions, but they are not appropriate. Caricaturing black women as Mammy (the painted woman in the top of the piece) and a black child in a loin cloth eating watermelon is racist and offensive. I put links to the Ferris State University Jim Crow website where you can read about caricaturing. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page about watermelon stereotyping if you'd like to learn more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watermelon_stereotype I think it's a good conversation to have.

Oh! Wish I knew about the other option for racist items! I buy them and destroy them. I bought a box of items at a garage sale with brand new old stock linen towels that depicted slaves. I cut it up and threw it out! So glad you’re of the same mind! I’ll save the address you gave!
@@YOSOBOHO totally, but I never knew of an option! I thought of contacting a college, to see if an African-American Studies or African-American lit would want them, but Covid happened and I destroyed the towels. So thankful to have an option now! 😊
