The original malayalam version comes under psychological thriller genre. But when it was remaked in other languages the respective makers claimed it as horror movie. Still the original malayalam version is the best.
Do we have any more such movies in Malayalam ? I have watched VelliNakshatram and this like multiple times but could anyone recommend a good psycho thriller film in Malayalam ?
It is an entertaining film, but the storyline is the same as the Akshay Vidya Bollywood one. The hindi one is an exact copy of this as regards story and even dialogues. But the actors in Malayalam make all the difference. Bwood one was very campy and ott. Malayalam one having the same storyline and jokes and dialogues doesn't feel like the bwood one cos of the actors. It feels more real and original.
I'm a Tamilian , the original Manichitrathazhu is one of the best films ever made . It's an evergreen classic . Remake versions are jokes when compared to the original.

This is what happens when legends work together. Lalettan, Shobhana mam, Suresh Gopi sir, Director Fazil sir(father of Fahad), Thilakan sir, legendary singers Yesudas, Chitra mam....etc etc.
Johnson's haunting BGM was a key factor in imprinting this movie inside every Malayali's heart. And you can also add Nedumudi Venu's brooding tragic expressions, Bichu Thirumala and Vaali's lyrics, MG Radhakrishnan's composition, Pappu's stupidity and of course Sudheesh's "kindi" :P
The hindi version couldn't come the level of original movie. Shobhana has been the best. Tamil version had a crazy woman dancing with Rajnikanth. Hindi version had not so talented dancer, not trained in classical dance Vidya balan. Shobhana with her dance skills, acting skills surpassed a great level in her own standard. Vidya n that tamil crazy dancing women can never be compared to Shobhana.

Firstly, thanks for reacting to my request 🙂.. The Malayalam version too has the same comedies as Bhool Bhulayya, that might be lost on you.. But I can guarantee you guys will enjoy this much better, because of the acting, score, treatment of the script, NOT over the top etc.. Also, this is directed by Fazil (Fafa's dad) and did you guys miss Mohanlal among the three men ? 😅 P.S : Rick was on point about the editing.. Also, Shobana's transformation from not dancing properly to proper classical dance is so visible, yet subtle.. 🙂🙂
The palace is near my mom's village and most of the "haunted house" in the movie is shot there. It's surreal to see all the places and the shots from the movie just come to your mind.

I agree! I'm not a malayali, but i've watched all the 3 versions of this movie with subs. I was enthralled by Shobana's acting in Manichitrathazhu. The other actress did a great job, but the original had something extra in it that the remakes couldn't capture.

Am feeling so blessed to be a Malayalee and being a Malayalee I can proudly say that original always rules....no bhulbhulaiyya no Chandramukhi could even touch the originality of this legendary work ..those were nowhere near to this even.....this had a story that had only Stardom.
Bhool bhulaiyya has comic touch to it. Aapthamitra also , even it's a classic. Dr vishnuvardhan is also a legend of Kannada industry. Akshay 's one of the best performances . But origin remains original

This movie is a comedy towards the beginning of the movie and it smoothly transitions into a thriller. Very well acted by everyone. The hindi version just tried extra hard to mimic the malayalam version's comedy and thrill (possibly because of the tamil remake having more focus on Rajnikanth, than the script itself)

The main difference between original and remakes (other than over acting performances of course) is that in original the lead role is played by Shobhana whereas in remakes you can see them trying to make it hero centric which failed miserably. NB: Shobhana won the national award for best actress that year
Whatever others' opinions are, I think Malayalam dared to give importance to characters irrespective of gender giving justice to script while filming though majority of the scripts are male centric which is natural for all languages. But heroes step back behind heroins if the script demands is the quality of whole malayalam industry. This began to see in other languages very recently.
the malayalam film is a heroine led psychological thriller with strong tones of multiple personality issues abd personal tragedy. The humour is poignant and used in key moments. Its cannot be compared with other languages as the style the psychological thriller is depicted. no histrionics here by the main actress at all. pure acting!
Though this is a physiological thriller, this movie shows so many emotions of a “family” in so many aspect, , It came out in 1994, I can still watch this movie any day “not me but every Malayali would agree that” this can never be redone..

I saw this movie over 13 years ago and still remember what it was about. I was around 5 then. I've never thought of this movie as comedy despite that many of these actors were in my favorite comedy films. This was definitely a psychological thriller and a must see film. One of the best movies out there.

Exactly my reaction. Hindi was like spoof. Hindi audience don’t understand only. I am a Kannadiga. I saw this movie first in Malayalam. I like Malayalam movie as it felt so authentic. Secondly I liked soundarya’s potrayal in Kannada.
Even the Kannada version, with Dr. Vishunuverdhan ,and that good for nothing,so call comedian ,was nothing less than garbage with their cheap dialouges and comedy.
This is the best version out there. Also after this the actress i see who portrayed this role best was Soundarya period. These are really powerful actresses

The screenplay is mostly the same in the Hindi and the malayalam version. The comedy might be lost on you for this one too. But the acting, music, and the location/set are much much better in the malayalam version. The haunting music, the claustrophobia inducing palace rooms and Shobana's performance will give you the creeps. Although there's a few dialogues by Mohanlal about psychiatry that are kinda cringey and is often made fun of in popular culture. I think it's a worth a watch just to see Shobana's performance. Please ignore the comedy if it doesn't work for you 🙏

Hindi films are mostly hero oriented. There isn't much good supporting actors. But in Malayalam industry especially at that time there were a lot of excellent supporting actors. You can see a lot of difference in the character played by Innocent
It’s not a comedy film entirely but it has a mix of everything including romance , horror and thriller . It’s shot in a huge palace we can feel the anxiousness while they try to find who the possessed lady was . Everyone in this movie has acted In an excellent way . You should watch the Malayalam version which is the original version . You will surely like it . These movies were the foundations for the Malayalam film industry today . But I can guarantee you guys will enjoy this much better, because of the acting, score, treatment of the script, NOT over the top etc.. Also, this is directed by Fazil (Fafa's dad) and did you guys miss Mohanlal among the three men ? 😅

I agree! I'm not a malayali, but i've watched all the 3 versions of this movie with subs. I was enthralled by Shobana's acting in Manichitrathazhu. The other actress did a great job, but the original had something extra in it that the remakes couldn't capture.

This movie is a comedy towards the beginning of the movie and it smoothly transitions into a thriller. Very well acted by everyone. The hindi version just tried extra hard to mimic the malayalam version's comedy and thrill (possibly because of the tamil remake having more focus on Rajnikanth, than the script itself)

The main difference between original and remakes (other than over acting performances of course) is that in original the lead role is played by Shobhana whereas in remakes you can see them trying to make it hero centric which failed miserably. NB: Shobhana won the national award for best actress that year
Whatever others' opinions are, I think Malayalam dared to give importance to characters irrespective of gender giving justice to script while filming though majority of the scripts are male centric which is natural for all languages. But heroes step back behind heroins if the script demands is the quality of whole malayalam industry. This began to see in other languages very recently.

the malayalam film is a heroine led psychological thriller with strong tones of multiple personality issues abd personal tragedy. The humour is poignant and used in key moments. Its cannot be compared with other languages as the style the psychological thriller is depicted. no histrionics here by the main actress at all. pure acting!

I saw this movie over 13 years ago and still remember what it was about. I was around 5 then. I've never thought of this movie as comedy despite that many of these actors were in my favorite comedy films. This was definitely a psychological thriller and a must see film. One of the best movies out there.

Exactly my reaction. Hindi was like spoof. Hindi audience don’t understand only. I am a Kannadiga. I saw this movie first in Malayalam. I like Malayalam movie as it felt so authentic. Secondly I liked soundarya’s potrayal in Kannada.
Even the Kannada version, with Dr. Vishunuverdhan ,and that good for nothing,so call comedian ,was nothing less than garbage with their cheap dialouges and comedy.

The screenplay is mostly the same in the Hindi and the malayalam version. The comedy might be lost on you for this one too. But the acting, music, and the location/set are much much better in the malayalam version. The haunting music, the claustrophobia inducing palace rooms and Shobana's performance will give you the creeps. Although there's a few dialogues by Mohanlal about psychiatry that are kinda cringey and is often made fun of in popular culture. I think it's a worth a watch just to see Shobana's performance. Please ignore the comedy if it doesn't work for you 🙏

Hindi films are mostly hero oriented. There isn't much good supporting actors. But in Malayalam industry especially at that time there were a lot of excellent supporting actors. You can see a lot of difference in the character played by Innocent

It’s shot in a huge palace we can feel the anxiousness while they try to find who the possessed lady was . Everyone in this movie has acted In an excellent way .
