My friend, you have given me an idea. I am going to photography in a square format with my Olympus OMD. With this camera, I can photograph in square format. Thank you for this video, it inspired me to do this. Many thank and greetings from The Nederlands, Toine.
Nice, I'm glad! I love square, I've been shooting 1:1 exclusively for a few years now and my eye "sees in square". I find the format very pleasing and balanced.
I did an experiment for a while which was insightful for me. I cropped my pictures only on fix aspect ratios 1:1, 2:3 or 4:5. It turned out most of my pictures worked best in 4:5, which has become my normal aspect ratio. It is rather seldom that 1:1 or 2:3 suits a picture best. But then it be so. 😊
Places to go in the Algarve are Cape St. Vincent and the Vicentine Coast, Lagos, Monchique, Alte and Tavira. That was a great video have an enjoyable trip Adrian.
Great video! Always found it's easy to break the "rules" with square format when it comes to centering. If you're ever back in the PNW, drop me a line to meet up for coffee/photography. The North Cascades are one of my favorite places too. Olympic National Park is very high up there as well. Cheers!
Love this. Very helpful. I've been doing similar things, but nice to see I'm on track. Although my photos are nowhere near as beautiful as your. They are inspiring.
Hi, Found your channel just a few minuts ago and watched only two videos.... but I have to say: Keep up the great work! You showed some very fine images here, I really like your style! :) Greetings out of Germany from another Bronica user :)
Thanks, Jonas, and welcome! I always love to hear from other Bronica shooters, I thought there'd be just a handful of them but I was wrong! That's awesome. Thanks again!
Perfectly timed video on square format composition Adrian - my SQ-A arrived this week! Thanks for the tips and safe travels in Portugal. BTW the cliffs around Olhos d’Agua might be worth a look
Adrian you are becoming my favourite channel on UA-cam and Instagram regarding photography. So calm and nice! Thank you for all the amazing work and sharing them to the world!
Thanks! I use my digital camera most of the time to meter, depending on the situation I might go 1/2 or 1 full stop over the reading that the camera is giving me. When I don't have it or I'm using it to record a video, I use my phone (an app called myLightMeterPro).
Oye amigo! Love the SQ-Ai vids, super helpful for a Bronica rookie like me! About Algarve, here's a few recommendations; Tiny publitos like Alcantarilha, Péra, Guia etc are cute and original. In my opinion much better than the touristy Albufeira and Vilamoura. The most beautiful one is probably Loulé. Sagres is a must and if you get the chance go to see the wind turbines between Aljezur and Arrifana (somewhere).. Have a great trip!!
Thanks, Patric! I will be visiting some towns next week, and will check those turbines out! Made some images of them in another locations in the past, so it could be nice to get these as well. Thanks again!
You are producing some great content here on your channel. I love these b&w square format images. Those two bridge shots are lovely. I've put a link for this video at the end of my latest one. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
Thanks, Craig! I watched your video the other day and saw mine over there, at first I thought it was a UA-cam recommendation or something like that. I had no idea you could link videos from others! I have started using it and the first video is your latest one, I really loved those portraits! Something different and refreshing, at least for me. Thanks again, and cheers.
I really do like your work, enjoy every one of your film clips. You have taught me a lot, which has been appreciated. going to take 5 of my medium format cameras away with me on my next trip and give the grain thing a go. Once again thank you Regards Brian
Not sure if you're aware but XP2 is C41 (colour film) processing. If you were thinking of processing it yourself - cross processing might work. (Not sure how well)
Stuart Herrington: XP2 can easily be developed in b&w chemicals. HC-110 diluted to 1:49 works very well. There is a very good article available on Ilford’s web page about the topic
Dmytro Solohub I’ve developed approximately 20 negatives in total that way and all turned out good. The pinkish colour of the film base is normal. I would recommend to extend the fixer time
I believe, that image ratio choice for most people depends on 1) personal preference and 2) subject (in this order). For me, it’s the reverse, I chose the ratio based on the subject and even crop to more creative, irregular formats. The only thing is, that you have to adjust your format to the output medium sometimes, I make a second version, e.g. for Instagram. With regards to your Algarve trip: Well my Portuguese girlfriend said that it’s gonna rain in winter 😔 Nevertheless, I hope the best for you! Cheers!
Very true. In my case, square fits all my needs better than horizontal / vertical. But square images won't fit nicely next to other aspect ratios. They work pretty well on Instagram, though! About the Algarve, it's been sunny and warm so far! I wouldn't mind a bit of rain actually haha.
Do you have any videos where you talk about how to find locations to shoot landscapes? Sometimes I feel that finding a location is the hardest part of talking a landscape.
Hi, Matthew! I usually use Google Maps, and I drive a lot. And sometimes, it's just getting on a trail and go for a long walk. It depends on what you are looking for :)
Hi Adrian! I am so glad to have discovered your channel. You are sincere, thorough, professional and comprehensive in your photography as well in these videos. I started out with medium format film photography last year in Oct (so 3 months ago). As an athlete, it's good to know that I can appreciate art too. Much greetings and luck from Finland! If you're ever up here, please let me know and I will be happy to take you to the best of places I know. I wouldn't mind learning about Medium Format film photography from you. Subscribing.
Hi, Sid. Thanks for your comment! I'm glad to hear you got started with medium format film, and I hope you enjoy the process. Finland is definitely one of those places I must visit. Probably not this year, but soon, I hope :) Thanks again!
Question: not a criticism why do you shoot 400 when you get so much noise. Is the noise a feature that is liked ? Wouldn't 100 be a finer grain giving a smoother look to the image. I'm just trying to get a understanding in this 66 year old mind. Am I missing something ? Like your Chanel and have subscribed.
Hi, Brian! I understand that grain is not for everyone. If you are photographing something where detail might be important, or even portraits, you might like fine grain or no grain at all. I like to make my images with a lot of empty space, or surfaces without much detail. Grain gives those areas texture, and I love it. I not only shoot 400 ASA film, I actually push it to 1600 or even 3200, to get more contrast... and more grain. I also add grain to my digital photos. I feel like it's very important to make the images I like to make. Hope this makes sense! Thanks, and welcome!
hi aows, i am inspired by your photo work and like the way you elaborate your shooting technique and storytelling, i recently also found my shooting style and is very passion to shoot amazing portrait, lifestyle and marco shot, i really learnt the importance of embracing the dark white grainess and shadows as well as composition. My first roll was not that good, as the developed film was underexposed or light leak only few turned out to be exposed properly, and starting to learn how camera capture light and how film react to dynamic range, but i have a question, is it possible to expose a shot properly without light meter, what is your way to work that out?
Hi, Vincent! Glad to hear you've found your passion in portrait and lifestyle. I wish you the best! About the question, I don't think it's possible to get consistent good exposures without a light meter, unless you are in a studio where you have everything under your control. I use my digital camera to meter for my Bronica, since I always have it with me (to either record these videos or take photos with it). If I can't use it for any reason, then I use my phone. Hope this helps!
Hello ! if you need film in Algarve you can get it in niobo in "Olhão" they have a shop there. in Algarve i would check "Ponta da Piedade" and Sagres. I like to follow your videos and the work with your bronica. congratulations ! Come to Lisbon !
Oooh, good to know there's a place with film over there! I will be checking Ponta da Piedade, I didn't know about it but people keep recommending it. Thank you so much, Diogo! By the way, I will be going back to Lisbon at some point. It's my favorite city in the world :)
I have tried XP2 (and XP1 before it) - all I can say is "meh". You are better off with "real" black and white film and not color film that pretends to be black and white.
Great tips on composing square pictures.
Thank you
Adrian, you are very talented and equally a fine instructor.......

Amazing photos and advice, very inspiring, thank you!
Great Video. I love the stylistic consistency in your pictures.
6:50 The perfect photo. Amazing 👏
If you're going to Portugal I'd recommend Evora, Evoramonte and Monsaraz (east of Lisbon).
Thanks, Timothy! Actually, I'm in Evora right now. Absolutely love this city!
My goodness those photos gave me so much feels, truly a shows how composition plays to a photograph. You've just got a new subscriber!
All of your shots have a very consistent look. With that in mind, how do you meter your shots?
Love you work, man!

Awesome video, I love square format and how serene and calming the compositions are. It's so unique
They are! I don't know why but I feel like they better balanced and (almost) everything just looks better.
Thanks for sharing, good job!
Thank you for watching!
inspiring and informative, i can't ask for anything more

Wonderful use of grain to add texture. This is a lost art. I prefer TriX overall but HP5 seems to have a little more tonal range.
