Ah, the time period right before railroads started placing priority on the more powerful six-axle units. The Dash 8-40BW and GP60M were the go-to units for those lightning fast intermodals, though. Great sight.
Some of the strongest units in AT&SF's fleet. Sad to see that most of em are being scrapped, if not put into storage. I think they deserve a second chance.
This footage is just beautiful! The song playing while catching up with a fast Santa Fe freight is just perfection. Also, that Santa Fe train is not running. She's flying in all her Warbonnet glory!
My uncle ran these fast freights back in the day, and if that train was a priority, they would routinely run 80+. The B40-8Ws was his favorite it was a monster of a 4 axle. He said, pulling a really heavy train, it would spin its wheels from notch 1-2. The next best was the gp60m quick acceleration and were comfortable riding.
Where Was This Taken And When? This Looks Like Northern California West Of Bakersfield. Which Train Is This As Well? Looks Like An 971, 961, 991, Or 981 Train
Daisy GachaLife UwU since u said “THEY ARE SLOW AND EXPENSIVE!” in your “why trains shouldn’t exist” video..... LOOK HOW FAST THIS ATSF INTERMODAL IS GOING!!!!!
It's called a 'B' unit. It's only used for it's horsepower and torque. It cannot be used as the lead operating unit (because there are no seats in B units!).
looks like a minimum speed of 61.37 mph. that's known as FAST freight!! it was measured at the 0.57 mark.so 80 would be right,by the end of the video. read my other comments below first.edited on 7-12-17,
This would have to be 1991-1994, and that train is moving a hell of a lot faster than 61.37mph. The ATSF regularly ran their hottest trains up to 80mph or more, and this thing is no exception. Looks like 80 to me
Towards the end of the video, I would say absolute minimum of 70-75, and could be up over 80. No way he's doing 61.37. Also that is quite the specific number you have there
Rock n' Roll and some fast Santa Fe, doesn't get better!

This captures the class of the Santa Fe trains running on the high iron. The music makes it more enthusiastic, making the scene classic.
He was letting 'em eat!
She ain't running. She's flying!
Those old 4-axle widecabs had some serious get-up-n'-go!
I sometimes wish Santa Fe didn’t merge with Burlington Northern
"Back in my day we had to use a lambo to catch up with santa fe's trains"
nowadays all you need is a moped!! well, a chevy sonic will do.
Red and Silver locomotives! Love those colors!

Well now we know how Santa Claus gets all the toys around the world so fast!
This footage is just beautiful! The song playing while catching up with a fast Santa Fe freight is just perfection. Also, that Santa Fe train is not running. She's flying in all her Warbonnet glory!

I heard from other people from crews that said the GP60Ms and B40s on the Santa Fe was rough riding and was uncomfortable during high speeds
Back when atsf used to fly those trains around back then

Great video!
looks like a minimum speed of 61.37 mph. that's known as FAST freight!! so by the end of the video, that will be 80+mph.
The GP60M's and B40-8's were rated for 75 MPH, max. So they were never running 80 MPH with any of them.
What the name of the song that was playing when you clased this train down?
I like how the train races through and blows horn
Nice Catch!
GO BABY GO!!!!!
Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe for life, B**CH!!
The music is fire, BTW what year was this?
