  • Warbonnets and yellowbonnets still ruled the transcon in December of 1996. More than a dozen freights are seen racing across the Chillicothe subdivision in Illinois. The video was shot at several locations along this busy mainline including Ancona, Chillicothe, Houlihan's curve (between Chillicothe & Edelstein), just west of Edelstein (near the current connection with UP's Peoria Sub), and Dahinda.
To see more action on the Chillicothe Sub, check out my other videos:

Love the video! Those Leslie RS3L horns are music to my ears and hearing those locomotives scream at speed is very lovely!

I find it neat that there was only a few locomotives lettered for BNSF shown in this video, not a single BN green unit, and the train at 8:00 had all three units lettered for BNSF!
10:23 nice catch of a seven-loco lash-up with nothing but EMD standard-nose power!

This is likely because atsf owned the sub before the merger.

I think it's kind of cool how this video was shot right in the middle of the merger. The BNSF company had been formed but the operations were still under Santa Fe until December 31st 1996 when all train operations were handed over to BNSF and ATSF was completely merged into BNSF along with BN. That's why there's some fakebonnets in there even though BNSF hadn't actually started running trains yet.

back in 94-95, went to illinois just to catch the last of the pure atsf.
    many lashups were all red/silver.
was also amazed at the number of gp20,gp30,gp35s that we saw.on the main.
    even saw a consist of red/silver of 4 fp45/f45.

It's fascinating, yet kinda sad, to see those occasional BNSF lettered units and cars.. Considering by 2000 the Santa Fe in this video was all but gone, and now, it's completely extinct, save for a few older units in second-rate local service, and switching in yards.

Seems that Santa Fe perfected the art of having a small two wheeled trailer on the back of a hot Z train. Even BNSF still does this on some of its hot Z trains today.

We all grieve over the fact SANTA FE IS GONE!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Anyway, it really ( no offense to bnsf ) sucks that bnsf was starting to repaint the warrbonnets. Also, love that no of the yellow and blue units were repainted. It's so sad. :(

+Steve WELL THE Santa Fe,,, and Southern Pacific,,, had sunk millions into their failed merger,,, but I don't think it WAS wasted 💰 so BURLINGTON NORTHERN PROBELY HAD THE REIGNING CAPITAL ROLLING STOCK AND FINANCES TO PRESENT TO THE BOARD MEMBERS,,, SO BN CAME OUT AHEAD,,, BUT THAT'S JUST A OPINION

    • @TrainsNStuff
      @TrainsNStuff 8 років тому +1

+Tejasnite good point, but people still don't see others. Take, for example, SP. All they have is SP 4449 and a couple patched units.

I'm not on a 'boast-a-thon' in fact I wanted to stick with the short haul jets when the channel tunnel was proposed! (I am UK).
Anyway when the Tunnel opened, I took "her indoors", to Paris for the trip, to find out. The tripcost 81pstg each, 3hours each way.
I returned totally converted. It was smooth and vibrationless. I think I could have stood a UK 50 pence piece on its edge, without it falling over, it is that stable. After emerging from the tunnel, in France, the train manager announced that the driver had informed her that we were at cruising speed, 186mph.
      I am now converted.l
