Small Cost, Big Improvement in Sound Quality: Sound Deadening Toyota Matrix Doors AmazonBasics

  • Ever since I bought my 2005 Toyota Matrix, I was a bit irritated with the amount if road noise. I was debating between adding an amp for the door speakers or sound deadening material. I purchased some Amazon Basics Car Sound Deadener, 18″ x 32″ (9-Piece) a.co/d/1z70wdZ and installed it in all the doors. I found it on sale and paid only $40, (though the price appears to hover around $60 most of the time). There was a noticeable decrease in road noise and improvement on the mid bass output of my coaxial speakers. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it!
    I also puchasedthis roller www.amazon.com/LUMITECO-Autom...
If you need door panel clips, the Toyota part is: parts.longotoyota.com/oem-par...
These are cheaper, and may work: www.amazon.com/Kinstecks-Reta... but I have not tried them myself.
All the other tools used were common ones that I already had.
The song played when testing the speakers was: • Go to Hell by Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband

I did a Honda pilot about a year ago. My hatch was mostly empty and free of moving parts. I installed deadened inside the hatch and inside the panel, but in the center I used an egg crate foam to fill the cavity. I used egg crate and good stuff spray foam in areas too hard to reach. This especially helped in and around the wheel wells. I used a thicker deadener in the floors, and I had the vehicle undercoated. It’s my wife’s car and I hated the road noise it had. A trip to Disney listening to it made me want to sound proof it. It’s amazingly quiet now. I swapped out all the speakers for higher quality and added a powered sub just to round it out. I think all told I spent $250 on sound deadening and about $400 on new speakers. It was worth all the work! Thanks for the video

Hey just want to say your sound clip demonstration of the L & R doors as a comparison is the BEST practical demo i've seen on youtube so far! I did this recently on my Yaris and the sound of the speaker system was night and day, so much so I've decided to just hold off on an aftermarket sound system as the Shitty stock system actually sounded decent/good with the sound deadening work done!

Thanks! There's a bit of work involved, but to my ears this was the biggest bang for the buck upgrade I've made so far.

@@courtneyanderson3108 yes definitely a more time consuming Job than I anticipated too, and I do a lot of diy. I think it's quite hard to quantify how much better my interior sounds on the highway and when listening to music now. it's a very subjective thing even with objective decibel measurements. A/B-ing the car is the best thing but unfortunately you can't do that without a secondary near identical vehicle!

@@djparra41 I didn't notice any strong smell, but of course different people have different sensitivity levels to odors.

I did the doors on my 2006 matrix with Amazon basics sound deadining and was very pleased. I also did front and rear floorboards but the greatest noise reduction was achieved by deadening the rear hatch door, internal and panel area of sides of hatch area and spare tire area along with under rear seats. So basically most of all metal below windows was deadened which greatly reduced the boomy sounds that emanate from the back of a Toyota Matrix at highway speeds.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll need to get some more sound deadening material to finish the areas that you mentioned.

Song went from sounding like a shitty paper speaker to sounding like a real guitar in the car.. Im about to begin this project on my car & truck; with silles or kilmat 🇷🇺..

The 2nd step to this is using foam mat as well. I did almost my entire 01' Celica GT-S in both Killmat and the foam liner (not the doors yet, thus why I'm here.) Really making the difference.
Also does that Matrix have the same 2ZZ engine my Celica does?

Yes the Matrix XRS has the same 2ZZ-GE engine used in the Celica

How much weight do you think the sound deadening added?

    • @courtneyanderson3108

The package of sound deadening material weighed 20 pounds and almost all of it ended up inside my 4 doors and the back hatch.

damn gota stop watching your videos, it's expanding my scope of work. would just taping the surface of each door help or need to go behind it like you have it on 5:20

same question, what if i only did the inner surface and not do the outer surface . wondering if it would still have the same effect or both inner and outer needs to be done

    • @courtneyanderson3108
      @courtneyanderson3108  2 місяці тому

I think that just doing the surface goes a long way. I've heard that placing a few pieces spaced around the inside can be quite effective without having to cover the whole thing. Obviously it can be tricky to reach in there, plus I had to do a lot of scrubbing on the bottom few inches to get the adhesive to stick. I might not put as much time into getting nearly complete coverage inside the door next time.
