I was a 48 year old woman who had acne like I was 16. Because of an increase in my insulin levels, I went "low carb". A few weeks later, I realized my acne had disappeared. My teenage kids started low carb, their acne disappeared. It was amazing.

I too have been chasing breakouts my entire adult life. I am a 50 yr old Male. I have been following dr Berry's advice for about 2 weeks and have seen a huge difference. I have cut out all sugar and starches as well as following the keto diet and having the green smoothie he mentioned. Remember, acne is not just a teenager problem.

@@jeffreymacintyre2711 I neglected to mention that I've been "low carb" then keto for the last ten years. It was an evolution for me. Giving up carbs "hurts" in the beginning, but after a time, your taste change. Now, when I'm hungry, I'm thinking of dipping my bacon in the egg yoke. Toast never enters my mind. I tried a crust of garlic bread, freshly toasted a few years back. The butter was delicious, with bits of garlic, but the bread itself was tasteless. I honestly wondered what I ever saw in it. I"m glad you've started your journey. Stay on it, don't give up. If you fall off, then just get back on again. The next right step.

I developed a sudden, horrific case of cystic acne my freshman year of college...Accutane (at that time) was sort of a miracle cure. I also received injections directly into my worst cystic breakouts to "cut the inflammation." Yes...I said "cut the inflammation." My skin thankfully does not show the horrible scarring, but as a 51-year-old, I still was never completely breakout free, although it had gotten better over the years. That said, I haven't had a SINGLE tiny pimple, let alone a cystic pimple since starting keto 3 months ago. Here's the sad realization for me: During my junior and senior years of high school I chugged shocking amounts of sugar due to emotional eating and because I never gained weight I thought I had dodged a bullet. Ack!!!! I have already been sharing this blessed keto side-effect with those close to me who suffer with acne. Thank you, Dr. Berry, for covering this!!

Dr. Berry, I'm not a doctor, dermatologist or nutritionist. I'm "just a mom". I am 42 with a 15 yo daughter. She rarely breaks out. I may get a pimple on occasion. I have found that "washing" our face with olive oil clears up all pimples within 2 or 3 days. Granted, neither of us have severe, inflamed, acne. I mention it because...well....that's what works for us. Olive oil on a cotton ball, gently wipe face or apply directly to pimple. Follow with a cloth dampened in hot water and laid over the face. Pat dry. Not only does it nix any breakouts, but it leaves my face soft and without the need for a moisturizer. Thanks for making these videos. So helpful.

I’m 61, and have had the odd zit for most of my adulthood. After menopause, they turned into watery little white heads, easily popped. I noticed that if I ate something sugary, I’d get more of them. As of a month ago, with the exception of a week when I was away from home, and couldn’t completely control what I ate, and got sugar in things like tuna salad (!), I’ve gotten way fewer of them. I’ve been eating very low carb in that month. I’ve figured that zits are a symptom of inflammation, period, and sugar (and other simple carbs) cause it in my body, and therefore I should stay away from them. I’ve been following Dr. Berry for a few months now, and have been eating pretty close to carnivore for that month. Thanks, Dr. Berry! 😄👍🙏

Hey Dr. B! Thanks as always for all that you do to keep us healthy...maybe not sane, but healthy. Haha! Just messin' 😉 Anyhooo, speaking of sanity, I am still perplexed on what the right course of dietary action would be for someone having a potentially catastrophic health event and if you could address this in a future video. Lots of celebs and others that get cancer, seem to go the vegan route for their pre and post-treatment as well as those folks like actor/director Kevin Smith who had a massive heart attack a few months back. Is there a medical reason why newly-recovering heart attack patients shouldn't have saturated fat and be better off on a vegan or vegetarian diet? You made a video a couple of years ago about cancer loving sugar (and carbs that become glucose in your liver) and I had also read about that from other enlightened folks and so I had always assumed that eating keto would be the way to help should I (god forbid) ever get cancer. However, I am not really certain with issues related to hearts/arteries and stent placements post-attack (or to tie in the cancer, hearts that weaken from chemotherapy). Is this just another way cardiologists "echo" poorly thought out nutritional info? Thanks again for considering this for a future topic! xoxo Christine in sunny CO 🌞

i would add the following. 55 years ago, my doctor suggested that I wash my entire face with a shaving brush, and to lather and rinse twice. This I do this today, preventing my pores from getting clogged with old oil. The soap I use also has some tea tree oil in it, but the effect is based on the brush. It is NOT abrasive and takes a month or so to sow decent results, but it helped then and now with blackheads.

I’m in the military and just got back from training in Louisiana where it was hot and humid. I started with some acne on my face before we left for field training for 10 days. After ten days of living outside in the dirt, sweating etc. and not taking a shower for 10 days or cleaning my face even half as regularly as I normally do my acne got much worse. I also ate way less food then I normally do so there wasn’t much chance for any sugar to go into my body. I was in training for a month total. During that month I fasted often I also ate a lot less food then I normally do even when I ate. After I got back from the 10 days of field training I started cleaning my face with an acne face wash and occasionally some dish soap to get rid of so much oil and junk on my skin. My acne started clearing up a lot more. After I got home from the month of training I went back to my normal routine washing my face eating somewhat keto but, not really and my acne is better after getting back to my face washing routine still not where I want it to be though. I fasted, I didn’t eat much sugar because I didn’t eat a lot in general when I did eat though it was somewhat of a keto diet. I did that for a month 10 days straight of it being dirty and my acne was worse. When I got home and went back to eating normal amounts didn't change my diet but I washed my face a lot more in a hot shower to open my pores up and cleanse them out my acne got better. I think a lot of it is genetics. I know many people who eat and drink a ton more sugar than I do and eat what they want when they want and not a pimple on them not an acne scar and never struggled with acne at all. So I did a month experiment without thinking that I was doing it and after that month what changed in my routine was back to eating normal amounts of food but not a different diet than I normally have, exercising more, and cleaning my face better, my sleep wasn’t the best for those 10 days in the field but after and before that the rest of the month was good. And my sleep is back to normal now after being home.

I don't have a gall bladder. I just very recently started taking ox bile supplements in an effort to reduce fat mal absorbtion. (Did I say that right?) I'm mentioning that here because one of the fat soluble vitamins is vitamin E, which is good for the skin. Dr. Berry, I was hoping you would chime in with your opinion on ox bile supplements, or bile salts for those without a gall bladder...

When I was around 11 I started drinking skim milk (about a gallon every other day) and that's when my acne got extremely bad. I didn't make the connection until I was in my early 30s! My face freaks out when I eat/drink dairy, eat high amounts of refined grains, and sugar.... especially around the jaw line. I have been on antibiotics and accutane for my acne about 10 years ago and it only worked for 2 yrs then came back. Diet has been the only way to keep my acne in check.

Very interested in this, and although Keto is something we've considered heavily, my partner and I are type 1 diabetic with multiple complications and other conditions, so not possible. We've both had isotretinoin in the past, I still get some breakouts, and have had to change my diet due to SIBO and gastro issues (is Lactofree cows milk considered okay? Things have improved since I changed to Lactofree and real butter, but can't get rid of all carbs due to type 1, and low GI isn't possible with gastro issues. So many complications not even getting a mention here. My partner has recently been diagnosed with hidradentis supporativa, and wondering if there is anything to naturally help that as so little is known. Thanks for all your videos Dr Berry, it's helping me get things together to talk to our specialist about the things they're not doing.

Still had lots of acne in my 40s and thought I was never going to get rid of it. After 2 months of keto my acne was gone. I get occasional hormonal flare-ups, but nothing like what I had before. It's funny, I spent my teenage years with the occasional acne (some blackheads and whiteheads), but when I hit 21 I started having painful cystic acne on my chin and jaw area. I suspect it has to do with me starting the use of contraceptives. Following dairy free keto definitely improved a lot my condition, but I noticed that stress too can trigger breakouts. Skincare can be helpful in controlling the damage (reducing post acne hyperpigmentation and blackheads), but it has almost zero effect on the cystic acne on the chin. I admit that sometimes I cheat, because I absolutely love cheese. I am currently trying buffalo's cheese instead of cow's because I read the type of proteins in this milk is different. Let's see if it will trigger some reaction.

I agree that cutting out sugar and carbs will help. I disagree that topicals won't help. I have 2 siblings, and myself, have skin that easily gets carpeted in pimples. Once, I got covered head to toe in them :eyelids, ear canals, back. And I shower 2x daily. I quickly learned to clean skin every 3 hours with cotton balls and alcohol every 3 hours and layer on the oxy10 after each cleaning. Even though I was a high carb teen and 20s, I escaped the severe acne and scaring that my siblings succumbed to.... Yes, I finally was forced to cut out all dairy and carbs at age 31,which helped acne and general inflammation. I am 1 year younger than Dr. Ken B.... Even now, I must use a similar topical regime on keto to avoid the random annoying pimple. Genetics too will dictate the degree of susceptibility to severe acne.... My grandmother was still breaking out at age 87.

Man I wish I saw this video back in high school. I spent about 12 years with bad acne and countless useless doctor visits , only to get prescribed creams that never worked or dried the hell out of my skin. I'm extremely disappointed with the medical community as they never told me anything about my diet. At the end of the day acne is actually a blessing in disguise because it teaches us to take care of her health early on and not eat crap food.

I’ve had acne since I was 12, I just thought of it as normal teenage acne. I was told by my pediatrician that everyone gets acne at some point in their teens and 20’s and it’s normal to have. Like in girls and women, 1 or 2 pimples a week before your period is completely normal. I’m now 23 and it’s still present, it comes and goes but it’s not the occasional 1 or 2 pimples a month like it used to be when I was in my mid to late teens. I have drank soda almost everyday for years so I may have to cut down to maybe once a week and then maybe once a month. I could never cut it out completely. I’ll have to try one thing at a time and see how that goes.

I've been struggling with acne still at the age of 33. Almost 3 years on Keto and it's still bad, almost worst, even though I've long cut out all sugar and grains for a while. I was still eating full fat dairy, but was diagnosed with alpha-gal about a month ago, so now I've cut out all dairy too (as well as all mammal meat...). Hopefully just longer without dairy will eventually clear it up. My wife is constantly nagging me not believing it has to do with acne is always trying to get me to go to the dermatologist for prescriptions or trying to put these masks and creams on my face. It's frustrating lol.
