I was a 48 year old woman who had acne like I was 16. Because of an increase in my insulin levels, I went "low carb". A few weeks later, I realized my acne had disappeared. My teenage kids started low carb, their acne disappeared. It was amazing.

I too have been chasing breakouts my entire adult life. I am a 50 yr old Male. I have been following dr Berry's advice for about 2 weeks and have seen a huge difference. I have cut out all sugar and starches as well as following the keto diet and having the green smoothie he mentioned. Remember, acne is not just a teenager problem.

@@jeffreymacintyre2711 I neglected to mention that I've been "low carb" then keto for the last ten years. It was an evolution for me. Giving up carbs "hurts" in the beginning, but after a time, your taste change. Now, when I'm hungry, I'm thinking of dipping my bacon in the egg yoke. Toast never enters my mind. I tried a crust of garlic bread, freshly toasted a few years back. The butter was delicious, with bits of garlic, but the bread itself was tasteless. I honestly wondered what I ever saw in it. I"m glad you've started your journey. Stay on it, don't give up. If you fall off, then just get back on again. The next right step.

I had the opposite reaction. I was 18 years old and the dermatologist told me that the only thing that can get rid of bad acne was acutane. My intuition told me that cant be true. So I became distrustful of him and refused to go on acutane even though he insisted that I did. Now on a carnivore diet and healing my gut from all the garbage food and prescription drugs.

I developed a sudden, horrific case of cystic acne my freshman year of college...Accutane (at that time) was sort of a miracle cure. I also received injections directly into my worst cystic breakouts to "cut the inflammation." Yes...I said "cut the inflammation." My skin thankfully does not show the horrible scarring, but as a 51-year-old, I still was never completely breakout free, although it had gotten better over the years. That said, I haven't had a SINGLE tiny pimple, let alone a cystic pimple since starting keto 3 months ago. Here's the sad realization for me: During my junior and senior years of high school I chugged shocking amounts of sugar due to emotional eating and because I never gained weight I thought I had dodged a bullet. Ack!!!! I have already been sharing this blessed keto side-effect with those close to me who suffer with acne. Thank you, Dr. Berry, for covering this!!

Dr. Berry, I'm not a doctor, dermatologist or nutritionist. I'm "just a mom". I am 42 with a 15 yo daughter. She rarely breaks out. I may get a pimple on occasion. I have found that "washing" our face with olive oil clears up all pimples within 2 or 3 days. Granted, neither of us have severe, inflamed, acne. I mention it because...well....that's what works for us. Olive oil on a cotton ball, gently wipe face or apply directly to pimple. Follow with a cloth dampened in hot water and laid over the face. Pat dry. Not only does it nix any breakouts, but it leaves my face soft and without the need for a moisturizer. Thanks for making these videos. So helpful.

When I do, it's usually because I ate something and it's easy to tell what it was, considering my simple diet. My skin care routine is very simple too these days. Based on my own experience, I can 100% agree with Dr. Berry here!

  • @susangrande8142
    @susangrande8142 4 роки тому +2

I’m 61, and have had the odd zit for most of my adulthood. After menopause, they turned into watery little white heads, easily popped. I noticed that if I ate something sugary, I’d get more of them. As of a month ago, with the exception of a week when I was away from home, and couldn’t completely control what I ate, and got sugar in things like tuna salad (!), I’ve gotten way fewer of them. I’ve been eating very low carb in that month. I’ve figured that zits are a symptom of inflammation, period, and sugar (and other simple carbs) cause it in my body, and therefore I should stay away from them. I’ve been following Dr. Berry for a few months now, and have been eating pretty close to carnivore for that month. Thanks, Dr. Berry! 😄👍🙏

This I do this today, preventing my pores from getting clogged with old oil. The soap I use also has some tea tree oil in it, but the effect is based on the brush. It is NOT abrasive and takes a month or so to sow decent results, but it helped then and now with blackheads.

I’m in the military and just got back from training in Louisiana where it was hot and humid. I started with some acne on my face before we left for field training for 10 days. After ten days of living outside in the dirt, sweating etc. and not taking a shower for 10 days or cleaning my face even half as regularly as I normally do my acne got much worse. I also ate way less food then I normally do so there wasn’t much chance for any sugar to go into my body. I was in training for a month total. During that month I fasted often I also ate a lot less food then I normally do even when I ate. After I got back from the 10 days of field training I started cleaning my face with an acne face wash and occasionally some dish soap to get rid of so much oil and junk on my skin. My acne started clearing up a lot more. After I got home from the month of training I went back to my normal routine washing my face eating somewhat keto but, not really and my acne is better after getting back to my face washing routine still not where I want it to be though. I fasted, I didn’t eat much sugar because I didn’t eat a lot in general when I did eat though it was somewhat of a keto diet. I did that for a month 10 days straight of it being dirty and my acne was worse. When I got home and went back to eating normal amounts didn't change my diet but I washed my face a lot more in a hot shower to open my pores up and cleanse them out my acne got better. I think a lot of it is genetics. I know many people who eat and drink a ton more sugar than I do and eat what they want when they want and not a pimple on them not an acne scar and never struggled with acne at all. So I did a month experiment without thinking that I was doing it and after that month what changed in my routine was back to eating normal amounts of food but not a different diet than I normally have, exercising more, and cleaning my face better, my sleep wasn’t the best for those 10 days in the field but after and before that the rest of the month was good. And my sleep is back to normal now after being home.

Hey Dr. B! Thanks as always for all that you do to keep us healthy...maybe not sane, but healthy. Haha! Just messin' 😉 Anyhooo, speaking of sanity, I am still perplexed on what the right course of dietary action would be for someone having a potentially catastrophic health event and if you could address this in a future video. Lots of celebs and others that get cancer, seem to go the vegan route for their pre and post-treatment as well as those folks like actor/director Kevin Smith who had a massive heart attack a few months back. Is there a medical reason why newly-recovering heart attack patients shouldn't have saturated fat and be better off on a vegan or vegetarian diet? You made a video a couple of years ago about cancer loving sugar (and carbs that become glucose in your liver) and I had also read about that from other enlightened folks and so I had always assumed that eating keto would be the way to help should I (god forbid) ever get cancer. However, I am not really certain with issues related to hearts/arteries and stent placements post-attack (or to tie in the cancer, hearts that weaken from chemotherapy). Is this just another way cardiologists "echo" poorly thought out nutritional info? Thanks again for considering this for a future topic! xoxo Christine in sunny CO 🌞

I’ve had acne since I was 12, I just thought of it as normal teenage acne. I was told by my pediatrician that everyone gets acne at some point in their teens and 20’s and it’s normal to have. Like in girls and women, 1 or 2 pimples a week before your period is completely normal. I’m now 23 and it’s still present, it comes and goes but it’s not the occasional 1 or 2 pimples a month like it used to be when I was in my mid to late teens. I have drank soda almost everyday for years so I may have to cut down to maybe once a week and then maybe once a month. I could never cut it out completely. I’ll have to try one thing at a time and see how that goes.

My dermatologist considered diet to be a factor in skin health. I’ve suffered from acne ever since I was 12, I’m now 16. I’ve suffered from cystic acne and I’ve went on diets where I’ve cut out manufactured sugar, carbs, dairy, etc. Cutting those out definitely helps but in my personal experience with my skin it never “cured” cleared it but did help lower redness and inflammation and the severity of the breakouts.

When I was around 11 I started drinking skim milk (about a gallon every other day) and that's when my acne got extremely bad. I didn't make the connection until I was in my early 30s! My face freaks out when I eat/drink dairy, eat high amounts of refined grains, and sugar.... especially around the jaw line. I have been on antibiotics and accutane for my acne about 10 years ago and it only worked for 2 yrs then came back. Diet has been the only way to keep my acne in check.

My acne improved on keto, but not disappeared completely. Some keto-friendly foods like walnuts were giving me serious acne break-outs within hours of eating them. I've eliminated those foods but acne didn't want to go away.
Now I went off the keto diet because I've lost too much weight. I can see that my acne has got worse again. On keto I mostly had shallow pimples. They were annoying too because nobody wants those white spots on their face but they were so shallow that most of them would break apart when I gently rubbed my face with a towel. When I eat carbs, I'm getting deep and painful pimples.

I agree that cutting out sugar and carbs will help. I disagree that topicals won't help. I have 2 siblings, and myself, have skin that easily gets carpeted in pimples. Once, I got covered head to toe in them :eyelids, ear canals, back. And I shower 2x daily. I quickly learned to clean skin every 3 hours with cotton balls and alcohol every 3 hours and layer on the oxy10 after each cleaning. Even though I was a high carb teen and 20s, I escaped the severe acne and scaring that my siblings succumbed to.... Yes, I finally was forced to cut out all dairy and carbs at age 31,which helped acne and general inflammation. I am 1 year younger than Dr. Ken B.... Even now, I must use a similar topical regime on keto to avoid the random annoying pimple. Genetics too will dictate the degree of susceptibility to severe acne.... My grandmother was still breaking out at age 87.

I keep getting breakouts all over my body. I'll feel a slight itch then notice a small red pimple. It's driving me crazy. Been to 3 dermatologists and they always give me heavy antibiotics right away and I don't think that's necessary. I'm not going to keep taking those because I know it's not good unless absolutely necessary. I am overweight and I have been eating a ton of sugar over the past few years. One thing I've noticed though, when I do alternate day fasting, I end up getting more of that acne, almost immediately. Which is odd, because I thought the inflammation would go way down. I'm at a loss at this point

Is it normal to experience acne when starting IF as a middle age woman on no medications? Because I am experiencing a MAJOR issue with that, one week into IF. My diet has not changed substantially, though I am eating less carbs, and I do not eat a lot of dairy to begin with as I discovered years ago that it gives me cystic acne. Any insight? Is it just my body adjusting to my new eating habits, and it should subside in time, or is this a sign I am doing something wrong?

Get some lilly's chocolate. It has stevia and is delicious. He said no rice. Rice is highly glycemic, as a grain. Veggies all have a glycemic value. Look up the keto friendly veggies and even look into a healthy keto diet. Honey or even honeycomb is a high glycemic item. There is no other way around it. It sucks, but hey, we gotta do what we gotta do, instead of what we've been doing.

I remember asking my dermatologist if food had anything to do with my then severe acne. He scoffed while laughing( like as though I said the most ridiculous thing ever) and said there is no connection between acne and food which later turned out to be a lie. I cured my acne by going on a keto diet. The reason I tried the keto diet ( and I'll never go back to a high carb diet ever again ) is cuz someone on the net said that she cured her acne that way. I was doubtful but desperate for a cure. So I decided to try it for 3 months and see and the results were nothing short of miraculous. I gave up the meds prior to embarking on the keto diet cuz they did squat for me. Actually, my acne got worse while I was on them.
Doctors should keep up with the medical advances and knowledge and not rely on something they've studied decades ago. They are doing their patients a big disservice.

However, 5 years ago, I started noticing I was getting redness on my nose and cheeks in addition to pimples. I went to the dermatologist and he said what I had was Rosacea and prescribed a topical gel called "Finacea" (Azelaic Acid 15%) which helps with the redness. I have done a lot of research and my own and have read that some doctors believe that Rosacea is actually a Vascular rather than skin problem since the redness is caused by burst blood vessels under the skin. You may want to ask your derm about that on your next visit.
