    I've never understood the argument that BTC has value based on the amount of energy it takes to verify a transaction or to mine it. Wouldn't that be a sunk cost? Meaning the value of the transaction is either inflated or lost by the same amount of energy it takes to complete the transaction. In the video, Saylor positions the cost of mining as the cost of defense b/c BTC is so hard to hack. Which I guess makes sense to a point...but it just sounds like spin as BTCs energy consumption will only become more costly as adoption increases. (Another scalability argument)

    • @StepUPNJ
      @StepUPNJ 2 дні тому +1

      Everything this guy says is spin. Bitcoin mining is a complete joke (let's spend massive amounts of computing power and energy to guess at a number) and it is now being taken over by the whale miners as they consolidate the smaller ones. There are so many things that are wrong and are weaknesses in the whole Bitcoin world but sailor never wants to address any of these.

      I'll attempt to give you some discourse on your questions, not that I truly understand it all either. The argument you lay out for bitcoin being a sunk cost based on energy or economic cost could also be used against any financial system that would rival bitcoin. I think of the cost and abstraction used in modern banking and that same idea of it being only a parasitic drain could also hold, given the banking doesn't provide other value like facilitating the exchange of money, goods, and services. I'm in the US and our monetary system is backed by the government and has had to be federally insured as well to provide a hedge to theft and provide a sense of security to those that would use it. Suffice it to say that banking and finance is worth the cost, and you can justify the cost of the security of the system just like any other large bank would. Let me know what you think, and thanks again for starting the dialogue!

      @@tensebeastgaming8527 Let me summarize your points as I think I understand and agree with what you're saying. #1 Traditional financial systems provide security for our transactions and come at a cost. That cost is comparative to or greater than the energy cost of mining BTC. The energy consumption of BTC IS the cost of it's security, which IS its value. #2 Current financial systems require funds be backed by the US gov as it provides trust and faith in the system. Faith being the ESSENTIAL element for any currency to work.

    Unsure if I'm understanding this correctly or not - MS explains that mining BTC doubles as a defense for the network, since the mining rigs use electrical power towards it. What.....happens when all 21 million are mined? What incentive would there be at that point, seeing as BTC rewards would be no more? Would the defense just fall apart? I feel I may be looking at this the wrong way, or too literally.
    Basically my question is, if the network is *everywhere*, and in around 2050 when all BTC is mined via mining incentive rewards, what will then power such network and have defense in place?

    Its called owning property because every asset has certain properties that make it what it is. Bitcoin has no properties. So by law, i could make the argument that i didn't steal your property by definition. Certain properties make silver, gold, oil and so on. Bitcoin does not meet that stardard. the basics of ownership explain that perfectly.

  • @faderen2000

    Can someone with some knowledge about bitcoin explain this argument; There is only a limitied amount of bitcoin to be mined, 19,5 mill so far and 1,5 mill left to mine. Because of this, bitcoin is more stable (Fiat money you can print up as much as a goverment/country wants to)
    I understand there is only 21 mill bitcoins in total. But 1 Btc can be split into 10 x 0,1Btc or 100x 0,01Btc or 100000 x 0,00001Btc and so on. It kind of feels like you can "print unlimited" of bitcoin too. We will never run out of bitcoin if you can just add a new decimal. In this case, the ones owning a lot of bitcoin, wants to hold on to it, so there is always a higher demand than supply, making the value go up. And the more the value goes up, the more demand it will be. The ones holding a fortune in bitcoin then borrow Fiat money with the bitcoin as leverage, and pay the interest with selling a small amount of their bitcoins (Im just guessing thats what they do). Also no tax until you sell bitcoin and get a profit. Not sure if any bank would accept bitcoin as leverage, maybe if you turn it into a holding/investment company.

    • @faderen2000
      @faderen2000 4 дні тому +1

      @@HeSpeaks-u9w Yea, got a bit all over the place. Basically, if all the Fiat dollar in the world was $1000, then you know you can only break it down to 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cent coin or 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 bill. Imagine you have 100.000 pennies (1 cent) and you wanted to split them evenly on 200.000 people. Well, you couldnt, unless the goverment make 100k more pennies. But with bitcoin it seems like you can always break it into smaller fractions. And because of that, I feel the argument "there is only 21 mill bitcoins" doesnt mean much, regarding inflation.
      But giving it an extra thought I guess the difference is that if you have $1000 and the goverment double the total amount by printing more, your $1000 will lose value, while with Btc, splitting up a Btc (so you can sell less than 1Btc) will make 1 Btc more worth. I guess you can make the comparison of breaking up a bitcoin in smaller fractions as the same as printing money? I just dont see the difference in if its just 21 mill og 210 mill or 2,1 mill Btc in total, since you probably can add unlimited with decimals (or maybe there is a decimal limit?)

      @HeSpeaks-u9w 4 дні тому

      @@faderen2000 oh, I see...
      Let's use a metric prefix: 1 mBTC (milli BTC) = 1/1000 BTC. Say BTC value continues to rise, such that 1 mBTC buys what used to require 1 BTC. This is *de*flationary (opposite of inflationary), since it requires less of the new money to buy the same goods.
      Thinking of it as "money printing" as you described, the difference is who gets the "new money"? In the current fiat, inflationary, debt-based system, the banks get the new money, and everyone else's slice of the pie gets smaller. With a deflationary currency like BTC, every BTC holders' slice grows proportionately.

You would have absolutely no idea if you didn't first translate it to USD, and then use that as a reference of what you can buy. All value of some commodity is determined by the locally used currency. Literally, no one used bitcoin as actual currency, and only as a medium to later exchange for actual currency.

    The real question is how sure is a coiner that he can access the value his bitcoin represents in the future? It's easy to flood the L1 network since it can only handle 5 transactions per second (a normal CPU can do 10 TFLOPS), and the L2 network can be gatekeeped by supernodes. Study the networks, even I as an ordinary guy can see the fence slowly being built around the value that bitcoin holds. The likes of Saylor are the whales that will drown the L1 network, and the likes of Mollers are the supernodes that will keep you trapped in the L2 network. Bitcoin is fenceable and gateable. Don't believe on it too much, you'll be locked out of your wealth.

      Then add Saylors amount, the "facebook-twins" amount, Blackrock and a few others and that % will be massive. Remember also that 20% of bitcoin is lost forever. I get a feeling its a bit like the diamond industry. Few companies have a lot of the diamonds. If they put all out for sale, a diamond would suddenly be cheap. Meaning, the big players can manipulate the prize.
      Time will tell. As long as the different goverments gets their tax from peoples gains, they dont care if its a pyramid or not. Higher bitcoin value, higher gains. And Im sure 80% of bitcoin owners (I have a small amount myself) dont report their profit/gains when selling to their goverment, as they should - but at some point the goverment finds out and suddenly they are in forever debt.

    2) Shake your fist at those pesky kids and their darn pretend money until it reaches 1 million.

      @@jludo What will cause the crash? After the ETF approvals I purchased. There is a lot of buying pressure and all the coins aren't even mined so when you actually understand it you start to see how it won't drop in value. Unless of course everyone sells it but I think most people who hold it understand they shouldn't it. There are only 21 million btc that will ever be mined. So the value will only go up because eventually there won't be any btc left. Why else would the US Government say they are going to purchase 200k btc a year for the next 5 years for a total of 1 million btc. When and why would it crash?

    • @jludo
      @jludo 2 дні тому

      @FinalFlash2110 The US government only has Bitcoin via criminal seizure. BTC is a name brand, convoluted NFT. If it actually functioned as a currency, that'd be one thing, but it doesn't. You are correct though, as long as more people buy and hold, it will go up. This is also how ponzi schemes work. As long as more people buy in and no one asks to cash out, everyone in the scheme is getting richer, on paper. It's just a question of who will get stuck holding the bag and when.

    You know, eventually, as people use and make bitcoin transactions more and more often... it will eventually come to a point where a single bitcoin will be 1 gb large. A single bitcoin transaction adds 300 to 400 bytes. A gigabyte has 1,000,000,000 bytes. That's roughly 2.9 million transactions. For reference, the amount of credit card transactions are 1.8 billion a day. If everyone trades bitcoins with each other (they way it was intended to be used) instead of "storing" them in crypto banks and centralized, then it won't take long before bitcoins take up more space than the available on the internet.

    • @HeSpeaks-u9w
      @HeSpeaks-u9w 4 дні тому +1

      The "bitcoins themselves" don't have a size ((giga)bytes). The Bitcoin (protocol) blocks and blockchain do. There is a limit on the block size, and thus on the growth rate of the blockchain. But that only matters to people running a full node, which you don't have to do to send, receive, buy, sell, or hold Bitcoin.
