My guess is expats in Malaysia tend to mix around with the locals more compare to Thailand (for example), since english is widely spoken here. Therefore expats here probably don't feel the need to hangout with other expats all the time. I could be wrong of course, but that's just my guess.

There' are not many expat communities because KL is not the preferred city for headquarters set up for international companies like Singapore. Another thing is, KL is a hidden gem in SEA. Not many people know about this city and country, so let's keep it that way. As a Malaysian, I would prefer our city kept in current way instead of being filled up with pubs and nightclubs that looks noisy and sinful (like Thailand) because of foreigners. Try to visit Malacca and Penang and their old towns, you might like them.
I agree with the lack of local clothes stores here especially in retail setting in KL. My take is because of the ridiculously high rent, its really difficult to survive just by selling niche local brands here, so most seller opt for fully online stores like instagram instead. If you see one in KL, most probably they gonna charge very extravagant amount a piece just to keep the shop afloat, and locals usually don't buy from these stores and we're also not their target audience lol..

As for "local shopping" u need to go to the outskirts of KL or the suburbs. Most locals don't actually shop at the malls foreigners/tourists usually go to in the city centre because it's just way too expensive. Locals still go to those malls but mostly for the atmosphere and to window shop. Actual shopping is done elsewhere

Great video as always, I value your pros & cons series a lot since it was really on point back in your Vietnam series (I live in VN so I could "check" lol). Malaysia really sounds like an ideal place for family vacation, you clarified much of my early doubt thank you!
Good video Skye. I have been checking out Vietnam & Thailand for a while & learned quite a bit, considering never being in either. I like S.E. Asia so much that I plan on going there & never coming back. Problem is, as you obviously know by your comment about 3 month visa being a godsend, staying in either is a real burden. 1 month in Vietnam, 3 in Thailand. Cambodia is much easier, but not my favorite place; no disrespect to the country. It's ok in many ways & the ppl are fine. To each his/her own. So as you know one has to bounce around. I never considered Malaysia simply because I was preoccupied with Thai, V & Cam. I like what I see! #1- 90 day visa. #2- food, I'm a gluten. #3- rent sounds ok, but further research needed. #4- transportation #5- Malaysian food & drink. Don't need western. #6- English widely spoken! Don't expect that either. When in Rome. Sounds like an easier language to learn than others in region. #7- all the cons you mention are pros. Don't care about seeing other foreigners. Don't object to other foreigners getting together, just not a priority. Less active lifestyle than Thailand is nice contrast. Thailand is great & a stone's throw away. I look at the region as a great source of variety. Agree 100% w you on little mom & pop stores!!! I love that. Chain stores certainly have their advantages, but not at the cost of cutting out the little guys. Even if prices are higher, nothing beats that personal touch. I believe Malaysia will play a big part in my travels. I'm 67, married & in pretty good shape for my age. I have my priorities & offset them by handling what most ppl consider burdens. Low rent is import, but not by sacrificing quality of life. I'll walk up 5 flights if it's a nice place. Not near public transportation, no big deal, older building, not much English, no convenience store nearby...you get it. Alcohol is expensive in bars, but bottles in liquor store I assume are more than other countries in the area, but much more affordable than the bars. Right? I will be checking out whatever other videos you've done on Malaysia. Is K.L. much different than Singapore? Let me know! & any other input you might have for me. 👍🇲🇾
Although the cons she mentioned are true but within a positive reason malaysia isn't Thailand or Bali...it's a family relaxed place and above all it's officially a muslim country
Making a border run from Vietnam ( every 30 days ugh... ) Cheap 1 way flights, you helped me decide that Kuala Lumpur would be worth it. Video was well said thanks, that helps.
Thanks, Skye. I see myself belonging to the expat group so I definitely will give KL a try. 2 questions. Did you find the heat being an issue? Also, did you venture outside of KL and if so how were the people? Thanks for your advices.
It’s such a great city 😀 the heat hasn’t been an issue at all for me, though ac is an absolute must in the apartment 😂 yes I have been to other places and the people here are the nicest I’ve ever met!
There are loads more to experience outside of KL, and they are mostly easily and conveniently accessible, including those to-see places in the states of sabah and sarawak on the borneo island
Ted AC is everywhere so it's easier but the heat is brutal.. Less so then other places though, the big city blocks lead to nice breezes in some places but it is suffocating at times
@@colby_247 as we malaysians say, we need all the malls we can put up so that we always have reprieve nearby from the heat outside 😂 actually also reprieve from the rain especially the thunderstorms!
Mont Kiara and Penang are two places that you can easily find those expats. They are living there for a long years now. Alcohol and parties are not the most important thing here in Malaysia as a Muslim majority country. We offer a lot and variety of FOODS! ✌🏻😁
There's an expat newsletter aptly named Expat. And I there's one expat society called Ibu Society. It used to be active but I'm not sure if it's still is. I used to borrow winter clothes from them.

For me, of course it's food...so many varieties of food...not just Malaysian food...it's easy to get Korean, Japanese, Thailand, Vietnam, Western, Arabian, Mexican, etc...actually Western food is quite cheap...most of food in KL is expensive 😂😂...at my place, you can get chicken chop/chicken grill from RM5 to max RM15...if you happens to visit Malaysia again, you should try to spend time at Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, etc (east coast of Malaysia)...their food is not spicy n more suitable to foreigner...for more scenery and nature vibe, you should spent more time in Sabah & Sarawak...try make friends and contacts with Malaysian...the next time you come to Malaysia, ask them to take you to local place...hope to see you soon k 🥰

There are a lot of local brands but they are not usually in malls. Their boutiques are usually in shop houses, shop lots etc and are situated in local shopping areas rather than touristy ones.
This country is family friendly. No weed here unlike thailand. But for partying and drinking better to visit bali or thailand. There are a few islands here that are tax free islands eg pangkor, langkawi. Yes visa is free, also you did not mention we never charge atm withdrawal fees like some countries in south east asia. But the sin tax is imposed on alcohol and cigarettes. To control consumption. Food and transport is never an issue here depending on what food you eat. If you go to bukit bintang to shop, it will be expensive compared to outskirt of town. It is like 5th ave new york city.
Due to covid people realised shop online much cheaper than buy in local store probably because with rent, staff salary and etc.Thats why currently physical store declining all are home based

You talking about nightlife.. I still remember, during the 80s & 90s, there are many live band concerts in Msia. Local rock bands. The ticket so cheap, around rm5 to rm10. Venue, they play music in the Halls, Funfairs, Public parks, stadium, parking lots, etc.. I miss that era..
@skye samuels hey i watch your vidoes as i do value your opinion and value your advice, more of the city and places you're speaking of would be better than an 8 min video of seeing you speak. More footage of places, food, markets, etc makes it more interesting.

luv you skye ❤️ Thanks for you opinion to our country ✊❤️
Your country is pretty and peaceful
Thank you!! ❤️
Although the cons she mentioned are true but within a positive reason malaysia isn't Thailand or Bali...it's a family relaxed place and above all it's officially a muslim country
Layback place for ex-pats other than KL, in my opinion, Damansara Heights and Mont Kiara. These places are accessible by trains or the Grab app.
Making a border run from Vietnam ( every 30 days ugh... ) Cheap 1 way flights, you helped me decide that Kuala Lumpur would be worth it. Video was well said thanks, that helps.
You can try to go to a Restaurant called Brew House. You can get a nice affordable Western food there
Thanks, Skye.
I'm Malaysian, the heat is always an issue but if you're in indoors like in shopping mall they will be AC but ya i hate heat too haha.
but its fun to drink in Muslim countries.
We are waiting to hear confirmation on our Digi Nomad Visa & when we get it will move the family to Penang from UK
Looking forward to it ❤
There's an expat newsletter aptly named Expat.
And I there's one expat society called Ibu Society. It used to be active but I'm not sure if it's still is. I used to borrow winter clothes from them.
It is good to know your opinion about malaysia.
Thanks for this wonderful video n for sharing your pros n cons travelling to Malaysia.
Looked like u guys with Ty n Soph had a joyful evening at a pub in KL.
Thank you! Yes it was a great night ☺️
@@SkyeSamuels 😁
Hi. For local clothes you can go to Sungai Wang. There r quite a number of boutiques selling traditional as well as modern clothes there
if you like to party you can go to thailand.. if you want comfort and good facilities malaysia is the place..
Agree 😀
Partying? Thailand or bali
Quite good affordable western grillers are outskirt of KL ....like Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya
So glad I found this video! Thanks for posting, looking at other places to live from the US and am going to give Thailand a go. Will have to visit KL.
Skye, I (thought) just saw you in another video - interview between a China Chinese resident in KL interviewing a UK expat who lived here for 18 years. Can't remember the channel name but I was like - hey, that's Skye.....I think 😛
Yes it was me ☺️ it’s a guy called Marcus’ channel haha. Hopefully we will make a video together soon!
You can go to malls like berjaya times square, sogo etc etc....and pasar malam to purchase cheap clothes.
Yes! I plan to go tomorrow 😀
Thank you so much Muhammad 😀
'western' food kita mcm yg kt gerai tu mana sama ngn western food dorg laaa. Better hang bgtau betul2 kang buat org disappointed ja igt blh dpt western food sama kualiti cm negara dorg dgn harga murah tp sbnrnya tak. Mcm scam ja
@@Aeybiseediy hahahaha...wei x jugak...aku pnah mkn western food kat KL tu...harga RM20++...hampeh juga 😂😂😂 aku pnah jumpa kdai western spagheti dia RM 15 je...tapi padu matt...
@@Aeybiseediy setuju. Western food kita dah ikut selera orang kita. Memang lain sangat dengan western food yang sebenar. Beza jauh.
@@muhammadsyafiq7848 kalo kt KL even yg harga rm20+ pon sbnrnya standard local je.. bkn authentic pnye. Kalo btul western food mau rm50++ sepinggan.. itu pn biasa kt restoran/bar tak dijamin halal. Yg kita rasa sedap sebab mknn tu mmg masak ikut selera org msia.. mana sama rasa dgn expectation mat salleh.
There are a lot of local brands but they are not usually in malls. Their boutiques are usually in shop houses, shop lots etc and are situated in local shopping areas rather than touristy ones.
What areas are these called
@@wahidali8322 There are too many to list it down for you. It really depends on what you're looking for
This country is family friendly.
Thank you for sharing 😀
Due to covid people realised shop online much cheaper than buy in local store probably because with rent, staff salary and etc.Thats why currently physical store declining all are home based
Ahhh I see, thanks for sharing!
😍🇲🇾Welcome to Malaysia.. Enjoy
Hello! I from Malaysia I'm new to your channel and i hope you have a Great day in Malaysia🇲🇾 oh and btw someone told me that the 2rd building of the KLCC is hunted but i Don't if is real or not because i never been to KL before even tho i live in Selangor(Selangor is a Malaysia state btw) but just be carefull ok,i love your video btw i hope you have a nice day♥
Thank you! 🥰 oh I’ll stay away from the haunted places hahab
As for cheaper options in Malaysia for backpackers, they can go to Penang , Ipoh, Taiping, Melaka, to name a few...
Hi Skye like the vids I am interested in visiting Malaysia around April next year with the intention of moving over there later in the year .I would really like to have a catch up with you to get an idea of cost best places to stay I currently work remotely and plan on 2 weeks of travelling around then will try a week working remotely to see how things work out great keep up the vids hope to hear back from you
Anwar won the GE15 and now he's our official 10th Prime minister. Good things will come to Malaysia economy and stability in the future 😊😊😊
Especially In K.L Local brand item not really inside the shopping mall, it's locate outside mall. (Mall is maybe expensive to rent for local people )
You talking about nightlife..
By the way i really liked your curly hair...its kind different on you... U look preety on that...thank you visiting on Malaysia
You always say KL is more expensive than Bangkok, but it’s not true. European food is definitely twice cheaper in KL. And in general KL is cheaper.
Hi, how did you do to find an accommodation ? Is there a website or something? I'm doing an Erasmus soon and I have to find a place to live :)
Hi, I'm also planing to move to malaysia, but one thing I would like to know before the final decesion.
How does the Medical Insurance work or how much it cost?
Thank you
Yeah.. Depend on what tourist want on their vacation.. Malaysia for me just could offer more on family oriented vacation or tourist that want beautiful and unic scenary and new good culture... because Malaysia literally is muslim dominan country, so its a little not to 'very open' culture like thailand and other country can offer.. like naughty2 party, alcohol and so on.. so for Malaysia, we are just being us... And proud what we are/have
I appreciate your pros n cons. I'm a retired solo traveler now resided in Siem Reap. The pros sound great, and the cons do not affect me.
I don't understand why someone wants to travel but desires to live their personal lifestyle abroad.
I appreciate your video. I need to check out KL.
Hello, could you please someday make videos on historical places around KL city such as the national palaces (both old & new), museums, memorials, monuments and perhaps cemeteries too? Thanks in advance!
Cute and informative. I love your accent.
Kuala Lumpur is a great place to live & work in. We intend to relocate to Malaysia very soon as the quality of life is so good.
Horribly polluted, horrendous traffic problems and lots of questionable immigrants.
Thank to your opinion about malaysia...
Hello ! I am a French student and want to do my internship in Malaysia. I saw your video and it is very interesting. I want to know if it is hard to found an internship in Kuala Lumpur? How much does life in Malaysia cost you? And is this a good opportunity to work in Kuala Lumpur?
Thank you for your video!!
Alcohol is pretty expensive compared to Thailand.. I paid approximately $11 for a pint of Tiger in Changkat.
Nice Summery agree with with you about social side for expats. Was ment to stay till 20th Jan but booked flights for Thailand for to watch end of worldcup my Bday and Xmas and new year. On that note where is everyone watching the worldcup games ? come on England from a friendy Scotsman
Thailand is great for that time of year, was there last year it was fab, more so new year 🤗 we’ll be in Malaysia for the World Cup! Thanks for the support ❤️
Thank you for your honest review sister 👍
Great video ,very informative.
Thank you! ❤️
i think it is easier to communicate with malaysians for their very good understanding of english language.
Just came back from Sydney and it felt totally like KL LOL. Whats better is the mildly cold temperature
Hi Skye,
I just came acrosd over your video. I am a German-Turkish expat living in New Zealand currently. My partner (a new zealander) has to travel for his job quite abit. And he got an offer to work in Kuala Lumpur for 2 years for the company he is working for. It came out of the blue tbh and it makes me quite nervous as I don't know about the culture and finding a job and well the food option in supermarkets (I have a few allergies 🥲). Could you tell a little bit more about how it is to live/work there? I heard Muslim is the main religion their. Coming myself from Muslim origins I know how friendly but also very strict people can be (I hope I don't offend anyone here😣). Could you tell more about how it is to live there as a woman?
Thank you for any advise!😇
Birader Asya'nin kendine has kültürü geregi ortadogulu müslümanlardan farklilar. Orda kimse tavuğuna kış demez , bizdeki müslüman algisi direk ortadoğulu müslümanlardan dolayi öyle .
3 months visa on arrival is the only pro worth mentioning - all others are much better elsewhere in the region
The other cons.... can be getting expensive with the country become more and more popular...
And also the insane Visa requeriments for permanently stay
Thank you for sharing your pros n cons living in Msia for 4 mths.. 👍
Great video thank you
We have applied for the Derantau Digi Nomad Visa Malaysia
We should find out anytime these weeks
Looking to relocate the family (wife & 2 children 5 & 1) - going for Penang
A very good friend lives in KL & loves it ❤
Thanks for the video - have subscribed
Amazing, best of luck! Please let me know how the visa situation goes for you guys 😀
Expat groups are in affluent areas like Mont kiara, Damansara Heights, Bangsar and Kenny Hills
Why do people go to other countries and insist on hanging out with other foreigners? All the countries I've lived in apart from my own I've made friends only with locals 🤣
how about cooking at home fresh fish , fresh veggies, fresh fruits, fresh eggs ? also if you dairy free is there any nut milk?
to meet other expats, you culd go to bangsar (jln telawi area) or damansara uptown
Thank you! 🤗
You can go to Pavilion Bukit Jalil
Thank you! 😀
Thank You for the valuable info.
Hello, it would be lovely if you visit Bangi there might not be the perfect place but I really recommend it 👍💗
Thank you! ☺️
Malaysia is always overshadow by thailand in term of travel point . moreover its also overshadow by singapore in term city development n clean. should you visit we you detour trip in south east asia n how long should should reverse time for malaysia n where to go
As an American who does not wish to pay taxes to two countries, I cannot move to Maylaysia unless Maylaysia gives me a tax pass until I become a citizen of Maylaysia and agree to renounce my US citizenship.
Note: The 3 months tourist visa is for Brits but not even for all Europeans for example.
Hello Skye
If you love nightclubs
1. Zouk KL
2.Fuze club
3.Kyo club
4.Wicked KL
These best nightclubs for you
But you haven't been to Taman Connaught Pasar Malam night maket
It open every Wednesdays
Thank you Wei! ☺️
Ya... If you want to find local clothing shops in KL I would not recommend going to the big shopping malls. You would have more luck trying to find local shops outside of Central KL in the more locally part of KL
Do those great gyms have a swimming pool and sauna and steam room and whirlpool hot tub?? or it's too much to ask for?? with the expected lower prices than one could find in the west??
nice review of my country .. thank you
Terima kasih ☺️
how about buying household stuff blender etc. which area has the best weather , is there a lot bugs such as mosquitoes
FFS!
How is the media imports? Anime movies, video games, usa and English movies and shows? Digital and physical media?
24 hours Islam on all channels.
Thanks for praising Malaysia
KL mostly for expats. Very true. Its way expensive even for most locals
7:28 How come 100RM converts to £37, but 20RM converts to £3.70? Seems that 100RM should be around £18.
Hi I have experienced the same lack of expat community, as well as the shops I see are mostly luxury and western brands in the malls
You wanna find expats, check out the Mont Kiara area or Desa park City if you wanna venture out a bit further
Where is it best to meet expats in Mont Kiara? I am moving there in 2 weeks 😊 very excited!
great insights
Done subscribed. Hope you enjoy your staying in Malaysia and promote to your family and friends.
