Understanding Brexit: The UK votes to leave the EU

- A video in which I attempt to explain Brexit: the UK's referendum and its EU membership.
In this video, I look at: the history of the EU, the process of the UK joining the ECC, some possible reason people wanted to leave, the results of the referendum itself, as well as what the future of the UK may hold..

Cameron said leaving would be bad for jobs, he was right he lost his the next morning

An unbiased and actually informative video about Brexit? I didn't think that was possible. Great video.
Ikr. Most vids are supporting their ideas

Video suggestions:
1. A video about the Ethnic split in Belgium between the French and Dutch speaking people.
2. Video explaining Catalonia/Basque and their possible independence.
3. Winner and Losers - comparing Capital Cities.
Ethnic split? I mean, quite apart from the fact that ethnicity is an artificial construct, even those who do believe in it would argue that the separating factors between Flemings and Walloons are language and culture, not "ethnicity"... Having said that, I would like to see a video about how the Low Countries came to be; how the Seventeen Provinces that once were turned into three separate modern countries. It seems most people could definitely use a bit of education on that issue before they start calling Belgium a "non-country" again...
+Robert Faber Well, it's not hard to see where they'd be coming from. Belgium has 7 governments, all with the same jurisdiction.
Jeroen Bollen Yes, but that's not such an oddity, is it? Belgium is a federation, and federations have powerful subnational governments by definition...
Robert Faber That's the idea.
+Robert Faber The thing that's odd about Belgium's federal structure is the fact they have overlapping jurisdiction. Every part of Belgium is under the jurisdiction of the federal government, a region government and at least one community government. It would make an interesting video.
Yes I realise it's far too late for a Brexit video, but hey, better late than never, right?
xd
true and true it gives an another voice about it
I dont even care man. Thanks for posting again! Your videos are freaking awesome and I learn more from your vids than I do in 2 months of school
Your videos are always an absolute joy to watch and listen to. I'd rather it be months late than not seen at all. Please keep up the amazing work.

"We Can't allow a foreign, unelected parliamentary body hundreds of miles away dictate our policies and tax us without proper representation".
Oh the Irony.
Yea the last time you guys pulled a dick move like that we threw your tea in the harbor.
It’s the 21st century
huh, sounds familiar... its like a british colony was telling them this
Its totally not like the British taxed the American colonists unfairly or anything.....
what did the world gain and did that change made the world better?
10:15, 107% of Italy voted... those overeager italians, lol.
I have really got to do a better job finding errors in my videos.. should be 58% favourable.
+WonderWhy At least 7% of Italian people voted twice

Sweden's bar is messed up as well
Personally I'm for Brexit, but it is nice to see a non biased video of such a subject. Good work!
I agree this video was very professionally made.
Ditto. It's very well done.
I wouldn't call it unbiased. Professional, defiantly, but unless you've only been listening people in favor of staying, it's pretty clear that this video has a very pro-remain stance.
+realevilcorgi Never ever heard a good argument from an anti EU supporter. Pounds in the toilet and your country is in shambles. But hey, no more immigrants right? Wait, no, you're still gonna have to deal with them. Why exactly did you guys vote to leave again?
Saying there are possible downsides and that leave voters won't get everything they want isn't biased it's realistic
I forgot I was subscribed to this guy.
Ikr
What do yiu mean
lol same here. Its like he only comes out on special occasions
Same
Me too
I'm still kind of puzzled by the result of the vote. It seems like most of the potential benefits of leaving aren't actually realistic (control of immigration and regulations for example) but I guess people didn't really read too much into it and just said "screw Europe"
You could say the same thing about Trump and his supporters
Think of it this way:
Would you want to receive benefits if it cost you your freedom? Or would you rather take a plunge into the unknown to maintain your self?
It's a similar situation. We have far more influence over our OWN government than we do against the EU governments. When the UK government does something we don't like, we have the power to get it changes. When the EU does something we don't like, we're the voices of merely one of 28 members which are easily overruled - especially when the UK and mainland Europe have very different views on matters.
I wanted to leave, I enjoy our sovereignty and the European Union are for an ever closer union. They have already started talking of a European Military now that we have left. We don't want to be closer, and we don't want the blue and yellow starred flag replacing our own.
It's less about facts and more about emotion and pride for me.
Don't worry, the reason we voted to leave is because there are a lot of idiots
Wow, you presented way more facts and reasoning than any news coverage I've ever seen. Could you just run all need channels from now on? Everybody just tried to push their agenda rather than give the facts. I loved the way you presented both sides and used facts that no one else even knew existed up until this point to back them up.
I'd like to meet that 4% of UKIP
I know right? Like, the point of voting UKIP was to get out of the EU? Did they change their minds last minute or something?

PS Love the profile pic.
Probably that 4% developed legit autism by eating nothing but butterdogs in their childhood

There just in it for the racism not the euro hating
The UK has been "more divided than ever" on the EU for decades. The Brexit vote didn't suddenly change that, it just illuminated it more.
Can any country do without the resources of another?
People may not like you but they like what you have.

EU has already started collapsing. Britians exit was a long term strategy.
How has it started collapsing? It's been growing
Any evidence?
+Josh “Engineer Engifar” Gunderson Mic dropped
+Josh “Engineer Engifar” Gunderson The remainers are the uneducated ones. Why would you want to stay in a protectionist Union? Tariffs and barriers to entry are killing UK business, and when the rest of the world wont trade with you as a result, you can only trade with people in your Bloc.
There is no advantage to staying in the EU. Also it is dying, debt within EU is going up, the EU indirectly caused Portugal, Spain and Greece's debt. In the 70's these countries freed themselves from their dictators, and wanted to join the EEC. This desperation lead to huge stimulus packages, increasing debt and killing their countries.
The EU borrows to keep itself together, and represents less than 15% of world markets, I would rather trade with everyone else than a bunch of stupid Democratically Socialist countries.
The UK will get a good deal, they have to otherwise EU countries would be shooting themselves in the head. Even the smallest of tariffs on our goods could kill the EU.
not to mention pro-leave campaigns are building in other EU states. polls in Belgium and Greece indicate theyre over 50%, Germany, france and more are hovering around there. if Britain leaves and makes a go of it (looking likely as there's already many countries expressing interest in trade deals, and countries previously saying they weren't interested back off that) I predict thatll be the end of the EU. a big argument in remain was 'we don't know!' well if other countries do know...
Well, the comment section will certainly be a place of love and friendship, won't it?
Several reasons why Turkey shall not join the EU in the near future:
- After the failed coup Erdogan is becoming increasingly authoritarian and the last thing the EU wants is an authoritarian president as their member.
- Turkey is bordered by Syria (need I say more?)
- They are currently at war with the PKK (the kurdish worker's party)
- There are large cultural differences between Turkey and Europe. Europe is predominantly Christian while Turkey is Islamic.
- Cyprus will definitely veto its membership due to issues with Northern Cyprus.
Because Greece's opinion counts for much in the EU...
Michael Rogers Belive it or not, it does!
Every country in the EU has a veto, so only if all members agree another country can join.
They are the authoritarian but they need to please the libtard in order to brain wash
Josh Kusiak What are you even saying?
Karmonit 0 He's some fool who doesn't know how to write properly.
I think the more surprising thing than brexit is you actually uploading ;)
MOST PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE VOTING FOR BACK IN 2016!!!
I'm glad there's at least one video out there which doesn't attempt to subtly sway its viewers to agree with their viewpoint while pretending to not have a strong opinion about Brexit. Respectfully done and well put together, I say.
The level of knowledge and detail in your videos blows my mind! thanks again for a great vid
Britan: trying to get in
France: trying to keep it out.
Britan: trying to leave
France: WTF?
"article 50 of the lesbian treaty" 😃
But I love your accent altogether.
This video has a couple of minor errors: at one point the words "Leave" and "Remain" are the wrong way round (though the colours are correct) and in one of my maps I seem to have somehow deleted Portugal..
Anyway, starting from my next video, I'd like to try and avoid errors like these so I'm going to experiment with releasing the video to a small audience first before going public. So if you'd be interested in being among the first to watch my next video (whenever that may be) and would like to help me spot errors, please follow me on Twitter @wonderwhy7439 for everything you'll need to know. This will be available to anyone interested, it would be really appreciated and hopefully it can help improve the quality of my videos.
Thank you,
Chris.
I just posted a comment two minutes ago questioning why Portugal is missing (Champions of euro 2016) (also assholes)
Another error is that the Isle of Man isn't in the EU.
Also, the graph about net contribution at 4:16 is slightly misleading since it does not take into account the rebate. This mechanism is often excluded from EU contribution figures because, unlike what many people think, this is actually not an EU mechanism per se.
The rebate is a way to neutralise the the UK's contribution to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Technically, it is a contribution made by other EU member states to Brussels on behalf of the UK as part of the rebate program. So it's not actually a rebate, it's a system where a portion of the UK's membership fee is paid by other members.
Those who benefit the most from the CAP, my home country of France and 2 other countries with large agricultural sectors, Italy or Spain, collectively pay the bulk of the rebate. On the other hand, Germany, doesn't not make a significant payment because its agricultural sector is fairly limited.
The adjustment adds a little bit to a number of other EU states and reduces the UK's contribution by a few billions.
Fun fact: Because France is the largest contributor to the UK rebate, Brexit actually means a lower net contribution for France. This is estimated at between 300 and 600 million euros assuming the burden of replacing the UK's contribution is spread across the other 27 member states on a per capita basis.
Oh and it's good to see you back!
POREXIT
Question, did you support leaving or remaining in the EU? Also, this is pretty much the best video for explaining the referendum; unbiased, informative, very well executed. We need more YT channels like your's.
Now that the hysteria has died down I can say that this is one of the most balanced info videos I have seen. Shortish and to the point.
“The United Kingdom seems more divided than ever”
How those words ring so true in 2021
This video needs a 2021 update since the geopolitical landscape has changed dramatically in the last 5 years. 🏴
What happened
@@worlddj1364 I can explain. After the referendum, we didn’t sign article 50 until 2017 because we were hesitant to do it. We left the EU in January 2020 right on the tail of a pandemic and got a really bad deal with the EU. Now with the energy crisis, incompetent government and other things, Brexit has actually made the UK weaker and politically unstable. The energy crisis which has been caused by various factors, we have to pay an additional tariff on energy that we import from the EU making things more expensive and our own domestic supply is nothing. The awful conservatives that are in power just keep getting into scandals everyday making the future of the UK look bleak.
From the Scottish/Northern Irish view, they never wanted to leave the EU in the first place meaning that it’s the English to blame for the mess we are in.
That’s my answer.
Unbiased and informative. Really good video. Keep up with the good work.
UK: life is good.
Cameron: ah let's play brexit.
For his political benefit, he ruined Britain. Also, he was only PM for a year after the 2015 Election.
I'm interested to know how much effort you put in to appear unbiased in this video.
Like were there moments where you edited a line or two because you thought you were leaning to far one way or another?
3:58
Portugal: Am i a joke to you?
Thank you for this of course-it is most well informed too-well done too!
I sincerely enjoy every single video you upload. Please keep doing what you do!!!
The political "Game of Thrones" behind the Brexit vote is morbidly hilarious. Cameron trying to score political points, failing miserably, resigning, Farage winning, and then resigning anyways, the PM fiasco and then finally May taking the throne. It's almost as interesting as American politics!
Anyways, I'm 100% biased as I'm a Remain supporter, but I am somewhat holding out for a non-exit or at the very least a "We're totally leaving the EU guys we wear"-type of exit agreement. We'll see though. If anything though this referendum seems to indicate plain and simply the growing divide between London, Scotland and the rest of the country.
I don't think the UK will leave either. Even though i am in full support of the UK leaving.
But i am still happy because the UK have shown that the EU cannot get away with everything they have been doing. It shows that it IS indeed possible to say "Fix your shit EU or we will leave".
To me, as an American, British politics seem more interesting because it seems to be a blood sport. In the House of Representatives and the senate everything remains civil, and thus, boring.
+J Winx you have been paying attention to the presidential race, right?
+Daniel Syck kinda. It is a shitshow

Great video! On the citizens eligible to vote, Irish citizens could vote in brexit even though they are not common wealth citizens. It would be great to see a video on the relationship between the UK and Ireland in terms of the Common Travel Area, immigration and voting laws.
I love how much work you put into all of your videos!
Basically CGP Grey's videos but better.
Yep! Less bias than CGP grey and easier to follow.
It's weird that this video is less biased when it comes from a Scot :P
HERESY!
I have only ever downvoted one of Grey's videos, and this was it because of the bias. I was glad to see him not pretending he can predict the future like every other Brexit video has done.
Longer ≠ better. I like them both equally.
It might have been worth mentioning in the immigration bit that EU citizens can be sent back after three months if they have no means of support and no realistic chance of finding any, something that even I didn't know at the time of the referendum, largely because no one mentioned it during the campaigning! Perhaps you could put that in a more up to date video, along with the UK's voting record on EU laws
2022 : quote "EU citizens can be sent back after three months if they have no means of support and no realistic chance of finding any,"
Well that isn't exactly the problem is it ? Those EU immigrants came to the UK to work hard for little money and for a limited time only, then they went back home. But now after Brexit they are staying home. With too few British workers wanting to replace them.
@@flitsertheoExcept they didn't go back home, because the UK Government chose not to use the power to send them back!
3:57 why is Portugal blanked? was it a mistake or does it mean something in the context of UK immigration?
Thank you so much for being so unbiased it is such a relief from lefty BBC and the like. It is so rare a political video is genuinely fair to both arguments.

Dear Sir, just a point of fact, in 1975, Harold Wilson was in favour of staying in the EEC it was just a small faction within that Labour Party (eg Tony Benn) that wanted to leave. Wilson called the referendum to unite his party.

hi wonderwhy i stumbled upon your channel this morning and watched everything keeps going i love your accent and your videos
As an American I don't have much at stake in this. It has been rather interesting, though I wonder if it should happen faster. Seems like they are dragging their feet. Everyone is nervous about the future, but I say you should rip that band-aid off.
Brexit isn't like ripping off a plaster it's like shooting yourself in the foot and crying as you try to bandage it up again with tin foil
Yeah politics and be fixed with dumb metaphors
The EU should have stayed as an economic union only.
richard343s yeah because the wife would allow a member to take advantage economically while ignoring the political union
Nigel farage is not controversial, he is cuntroversial
Nu-males need to stop.
you are not female, therefore you cannot use that word.
What are you, a teenager? Brainwashed by the Guardian. Farage is the most important politician since Thatcher, maybe even since Churchill, and he deserves a knighthood for tirelessly fighting for what the majority desired but could never, ever get their politicians to acknowledge. He single handedly got us free and signaled a collective 'fuck you' to all of your traitorous, left wing types.
The referendum is not legally binding. If Article 50 is triggered, it will be because Parliament fears that the Brexiters will make their opinion felt through parliamentary elections. In other words, if Parliament ignores the voice of the people, the people will find a new Parliament. Which is precisely what should happen in a free democracy, regardless of where you stand on Brexit itself. That said, I don't think Article 50 will be triggered, unless the E.U. truly deteriorates beyond repair and Britain's bargaining position in trade becomes a great deal stronger. Until then, the Tories will stall like its no tomorrow, while keeping an ear to the ground to see if its safe to openly reject the referendum.

England wanted to leave, not the UK.
And Wales
Solo12313 No offence but I don't think you're getting my point. England will sway any referendum in their favour, leaving N. Ireland, Scotland & Wales without a choice.
waha 28 Wales actually voted for leave though. Yes, England has the majority of the British population, but if more Scots voted remain or more Welsh the result would have been different. My point is if Wales were independent their vote would be leave.
+waha 28 Every council in Scotland voted stay.
+waha 28 If England swayed the vote in thier so called favour, then why did Scotland and Northern Ireland vote remain
Poor UK. Literally.
The GBP/USD is at it's lowest in history. 1.306. if you'd stayed it would be close to 1.4
It's probably not bad, but it's definitely not the best it's ever been.
and once we leave we'll be free of EU red tape on our business' and foreign exports. already many common-wealth countries are wanting free trade deals, Germany says a trade deal is top priority as well. we'll be able to reignite our fishing industries
And overfish? there's a reason for fishing laws, to preserve them for later. If we fish now a lot, there won't be fish later
Alwin Priven I never said freedom to overfish, I said freedom to reignite our fishing industry, this would be done by reclaiming our fishing waters which are currently being used more by other EU nations that Britain. britan atm only gets to catch 20% of the annual safe-limit [or whatever the fancy term is] by value. we wouldn't need to overfish to quintruple our fishing revenue

We voted leave because Britain believes in democracy!
+Phoebe Elephant
It is a constitutional monarchy however it also has a parliamentary system that actually runs the country. The monarchy is just a figurehead to make big bucks off tourists and to open new buildings. The parliament is lead by a prime minister that is elected every four years. The EU doesn't have any elections for its elite. Therefore the UK voted for full autonomy over which person can create laws for the country.
Exactly! So now you have a PM that wasn't elected by the people! How democratic.
Yes Britain hates the democraticly elected parlement in Brussels because it believes in democracy!
Kind of an ironic statement, considering the current primeminister is unelected
+Jotham Bate The PM isn't elected. He is appointed by the Queen. She might have continuously chosen the biggest party since recently, but this certainly isn't always the case.

even the conservatives are more left then the democrats, everyone supports keeping the NHS where as no presidential candidate wants to form a US version

EU will disintegrate in near future and UK will strengthen her position
You just created a black hole
aye, looking like the latter though
Yeah, I tke first, thank you very much.
I hope it will be the first, (sorry Brits) but looking at Scotland wanting to leave the UK to join the EU and Ireland wanting to unite, England's future doesn't look that good
Mathias Radenez scotlands just dragging their heels through out politics anyways
Is the disdain for continental Europeans something all Brits have (the English, the Welsh, and the Scottish) or is it mainly just an English thing? I know it isn't as prevalent among the Irish. Asking out of curiosity .
Well, presumably based on the vote, there would at least be less of it in Scotland. It's pretty sad though host much racism there was leading up to and after the Brexit vote. The amount of harassment and violence against people deemed Polish was surprising to me, being an American, I didn't know being anti-Polish was even a major thing, especially in the UK.
+MaxLazerGamer haha that's funny, the Welsh don't like the English, but not enough for them to want to become independent. That's good to know, so it's not quite as intense as for example Turks and Greeks, or Serbians and Albanians.
I'd say England has more of a tradition of scepticism for Europe, partly from geography and history.
+Sardeth 42 it's alright, I wanted anecdotes.
I don't believe Brits have a disdain for Europeans in general. Just their way of life due to national leaderships and culture.
The same way i doubt Brits have anything against people with brown skin. Just their way of life which is directly incompatible with Britain's.
There's plenty of "non brits" who has come to Britain and adopted Britain's way of life, culture and customs. I sincerely doubt any Brit has anything negative to say about those people.
I love the image at 7:55. I think it collective expresses the emotions of a good portion of GB.

My prediction:
Scotland leaves UK
Northern Ireland rejoins Ireland
London becomes a city state
England and Wales stay together
Other countries leave EU
Russia entices the nations that left to make a rival organisation
My prediction.
You're an idiot
apart from London becomes a city state, the rest is true
Reallly, why?
Rory Coffey none of the above will happen, except for England and Wales sticking together. Brexit was feared to send the UK economy into meltdown and cause world war 3, all thats happened is that the £ has gone down in value.
The SNP are so intent on taking Scotland out of the UK that they are willing to see it go under given that the oil prices are so low and the Barnett formula will cease to exist
London becomes a city state? really??
NI will not rejoin Ireland as that would cause the peace process to disintegrate
Russia is gonna sweep up the countries that leave the EU and form a rival organisation? erm Britain has left and the Dutch will be next, I look fwd to you replying to me when the Dutch and Britain link up with Russia to form a new club, i predict ill be waiting rather a long time for that reply

+Triple K Gaming Dude, thats not even patriotic anymore thats discrimination and Nationalism. That is even older, we know how that worked out 1933.
+3pac son I dont See how its deluded. See how every economy in the EU grows? Its because it helps. Not onky that, it even helps keeping the peace in Europe and to prevent something like 1914 and 1939. Both World Wars were the result of unnecessary patriotism and power-struggle. And it makes many things even easier for the people. Every EU member grows? Have I been mislead about the absolute train wreck economies Greece and the Slavic countries have? Britain gives more than it takes from the EU it doesn't need the EU. Why should Brits care if Greece or Poland crumbles? It's not their problem. They've made their decision they'd rather help themselves and I don't blame them.
+Jaeckex It did work out greatly tbh fam. If only Germany won the Second World War.

So, how would that work exactly? Quizzing everyone about their religion as they apply? Do you really think that's appropriate?
