    Today I'm going over some of the biggest challenges I've encountered as a newbie (new rider) trying to learn wheelies on a Harley Davidson. These are some of the things I wish I had known prior to embarking on this journey. This is not a how-to by any means; rather, a review of some of the difficulties I've encountered. Hopefully these insights will provide some tricks and tips for new riders looking to get into the Harley Wheelies. It's been a struggle thus far, but a fun ride nonetheless! Enjoy

    As someone who has gone through this already, an can now hold em high for long long distances. The 2 best mods you can do is a reklus torque drive clutch. It makes it butter. An Shinko 777 tire. Cheap an incredibly sticky. Seriously that tire made a difference of smoking tire in 2nd gear to power wheeling in 2nd. Ur getting there bro. Don’t be afraid to lean back a little more, as long as. I wheelie a 93 Harley fxr with throttle alone no clutch “I have a bike upgraded to do this “ then it’s all about up shifting but loved the video a lot of what you talked about is right and what nobody else will tell you it depends on the rider the asphalt ,tire ,psi ,set up you name it but yes you are going to spend a lot of time repairing your bike and tightening bolts it’s just part of the game when you wanna put a 800+ pound bike on one wheel everything takes a beating. good job though hope see more when your scraping paint !

    Tap front brake compress and load front forks a little then clutch and throttle as the forks are coming back up. You won’t have to rev so high that way bc the suspension is working for you. Much easier to get it up.

    Common sense and physics really...Harleys are, long, HEAVY, and have pathetically poor power to weight ratio. Go to the other end of the motorcycle spectrum a ride a modern dirtbike. Much shorter wheelbase, WAY lighter at about 1/8 of a ton, and with the same HP as most Harleys...they are actually hard to keep the front end down when you give them throttle... See that was easy!

    F Y I. We Truckers Live in those trucks so most times if you see one parked in those loading docks behind a big old empty warehouse try not to start doing wheelies near them. We have 70 plus hour work weeks and put in an average of 14 hours or more a day doing trucker stuff so give us a break and let us sleep when you can please. Besides no one wants a sleepy Trucker on the road Hauling 44 thousand pounds of whatever all just because he was woke up by people doing wheelies on HOGS! We get enough of the homeless knocking on our door every few hours begging for money and constantly having to move our rigs while on break to clear a dock just to add this. Take it for what it's worth,
    Shinko 777. Best tire for wheelie's. Worst tire for burnouts. Mine WILL NOT BREAK LOOSE. I can wheelie on the worst of roads.
    Have faith in the rear brake and engine compression, half the time I go "too far back" I just let the engine bring me back forward. You'll know if you need back brake.

    Start trying to tap that tail light on the ground at a slower speed. But not really you know what I mean... Wheelie slower and get that balence point right b4 your about to tip... You know what I mean. An endo, no throttle just balance and brake then a tap of throttle to bring it back to endo
    Most people cant get comfy going back to that point but once you can its all nothing but getting way better...
    Think unicycle if that makes any motherfuckin sense...😒🤔 Hard to explain bro
    My biggest issue wit Harleys was getting them up and slowing them down right b4 loop, but years of dirtbikes and quads made me master this and then all that weight coming back down. One tip is to newbies, she will throw you over the bars if you snap the front end down to quik because of the weight of that heavy motherfucker newbies need to know that more than anything. She will throw you, just sayin and your sack and ribs or abdomin will be raining in pain if you catch your bars..

    Most Cruisers are based on the Dyna ergos. My Warrior 1700 center of balance very much like a Harley Dyna although you sit on rather into the bike the way the seat is positioned. Foot position is more straight down on my Warrior. No feet forward controls. Weight of a cruiser works against raising the front wheel. Love dark rubbery type tar asphalt streets. Makes me feel very secure even normal riding. I have those half floor board pegs. Love your Dyna. Lots of problems or just ridden hard by previous owner?

    I got a 2000 fxdx dynaglide from my pops after he passed away. I used to ride it all the time and then I had some health issues and the last time I rode the bike i got bad speed wobble when accelerating, the day before the last ride I had dumped it doing dumb ass burnouts when I was not in the right state of mind or in the right physical condition to even be riding. After that I had to move out of state for awhile and the bike sat there. it’s been a good year since I’ve been back and I can’t seem to save up enough money to buy parts to get it running again. I also don’t have the mechanic know how or the right tools to fix it and it kills me everyday that I can’t ride. Right now it’s sitting in my garage attempting to collect dust but I clean it every week. The last couple months when I was riding, it kept having problems where it wouldn’t start for hella long and I’d be stuck there trying over and over to start it and it usually worked eventually. Also it died on me twice when leaving the Harley dealership after telling them to fix all the problems it had. They kept sending me out saying it’s all good and it’d die on my way home almost killing me on the freeway, I finally got it home then it’d keep dying randomly I’d be stuck for 30 minutes and then it’d start back up, but it pissed me off so bad to have it keep dying on me in random areas of town. So I know I have a lot of work to do to it, I’m thinking I’m going to need a new starter and stator and a bunch of electrical shit to replace, I’m probably going to get a new carburetor (my dads best friend who was a mechanic would tell me it always had carburetor problems since my dad got it, but he’s passed away now too so I have no one to help me out with the bike and no knowledge of my own). I know I could do a lot of the work myself I would just need to learn first. It makes it hard when you’re poor as fuck and have crazy amounts of bills to pay tho. I’m jealous as fuck of the freedom you have riding your bike, even when I was riding the freedom wasn’t there cause it die on me and I couldn’t leave my neighborhood basically. I just needed to vent to some people who know the pain I’m in. I have terrible luck with bikes just got a dirt bike stolen from me, and all you guys know what it’s like to not be able to ride. I’m slowly going crazier and crazier not being able to ride at all.

      Thanks for checking out the vid and sharing your story/experiences. Sorry to hear about those accidents. Motorcycle riding is no doubt a very dangerous hobby, whether you're in an empty back lot trying wheelies, or as you point out, simply out cruising. In some cases, I think the latter can be even more dangerous. Many would argue that jumping on a two wheeled death machine at all is senseless. I think we can both come up with a few reasons explaining why we still do it, despite the risk involved. I can only speak for myself, but I get a sense of enjoyment trying/learning new things. Trying to learn wheelies has been no different. Doesn't mean it's for everyone, or that it's a good idea, or that it even makes sense to be out spending time doing it. But at the end of the day, I'm having a good time. As I always say, "different strokes for different folks." Ride safe, my friend!

    Great video man! I’m learning too here are a few things that I do to get her up which I don’t think I heard you mention.
    1. I drop my weight back into the seat as I release the clutch. This loads your suspension and helps increase the contact patch.
    2. I have a harder compound tire so I drop down to 20psi and warm the tire up before wheelin.
    Both seem to help me.

    I've been watching the harley wheelie videos for years. Suscribed to you when this video came out. Today was the first 70 degree day of the year. It might be stupid.... I have never wheelied ANY bike. But this street bob is all I got. Technically I did attempt it with my indian scout. So I am used to the burnout feeling. And for 30 or so tries, that's all I got with the bob. Burn out after burnout.
    The one thing I did that changed it was pulling back as I dumped the clutch. That thing pushed me back into my seat and I wasn't prepared for it to come up. My clutch hand let go since I was grabbing it with all 4 fingers and let them go to dump it.
    Scary... but exhilirating. feeling this beast come up. Unfortunately it's back to 40s... rain... 30s... So I wont practice for a while. But yeah. After rewatching your video, I see how pulling back helps out a lot.

      Dude, that's AWESOME! And major props for trying your first moto wheelie on a dyna! That takes cojones! Hahaha. The dyna has seriously been the absolute most challenging two wheeled machine I have ever tried to wheelie. It's absurd how difficult it is for us newbies. But isn't it crazy how when you get the formula just right, it feels like the bike was totally built for it. The biggest challenge for us newbies is figuring out what the correct formula is, and getting consistent with it. I'm reluctant to say keep it up, given all the issues I've had with my bike breaking, but we both know you'll make your own judgment call there, so no worries. Thanks a bunch for sharing this! would love to hear some feedback on the Jim's 135 Evo drop in crate motor. I spent the money to duplicate exactly the way they built their demo to insure the same torque and HP numbers. immediately disappointed because needle jet in the super duper toilet bowl carb could not be obtained throughout a world wide search over the (interweb). oh well so I installed a 48Mkuinny at a major cost. I could only get 250ftlbs torque and almost exactly the same HP.
    I'm not saying it's not a giddy up go hang on and smile I'm just a little disappointed with the outcome when I spent the money to replicate their model to obtain their numbers and ended up spending quite alot of extra money only to come close. I really think its capable of much more but need some expert advise and some possible retooling to achieve. shes a kick in the ass now but I need more. hahaha

    Hey dude, on your clutch up, are you keeping the throttle the same and dumping the clutch and holding throttle at the same and adjusting and it’s going up? Or revving up with clutch in dumping clutch with no throttle and pulling up with throttle afterward? I’m getting good pop but can’t get it to climb and I’m breaking loose.
    Thanks man!!!

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  5 років тому +1

      Great question! So, my method/technique with the throttle/clutch has changed a bit. When I first started, I would roll about 5mph, pull clutch in, go wide open throttle, lean forward/compress front forks, and then dump the clutch and throw weight back. It took some refining/figuring out rpm, etc with this method and was wicked hard on the bike (not that wheelies are easy on the bike anyway). After getting my new shinko tire, however, this method didn't work at all. It did nothing but burn rubber. So, I had to start from square one again. What I ended up figuring out was the following: I slip the clutch at much lower rpms (still going pretty slow) with the throttle probably only about a quarter open. But I open the throttle up as the front wheel comes up/after the rear wheel sticks. This approach still requires a lot of refinement/adjusting speed, rpms, throttle, etc. But, I'm able to do it with 35 psi in the rear tire and it is a lot less work on the motor. The only drag is I still have sessions where I go out and only get like 1/5. Especially as of late cause I've been busy and haven't gotten out much. Consistency and lots of practice is the name of the game. The drag is every time I start to get it, the bike breaks or something happens. Lol. Hope this helps somewhat. Eventually I'll do a how to vid, but I need to dial em in better myself for that. And keep in mind everyone does it a little bit different. Good luck! Ride safe!

      Jon's Moto Garage it does greatly, I find that lower rpm was helping with it some, even with 30psi I lowered it and it felt sloppy and didn’t like it and felt like my clutch was paying for it.
      I quit looking at my gauges and it helped a little more by going with muscle memory and sound! Need a new tire soon anyway so hopefully that will help more!!!

      Hahaha! Fortunately I have not wrecked it yet. If you check some of my more recent vids, you can see the wheelie improvement. Still room for progress, but getting a bit better. Although I will say I've had a handful of things break/wear out d/t the qheelie game (clutch, chains, tires, battery...). Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe! Oh yeah, blue loctite! Noted!

      I absolutely agree, use blue loctite, not red! Red is to make sure whatever you put it on will never, ever come off again!

    Great job considering your only 5 months in. If your handy. Add a second rear caliper and finger pull. A lot of the stunt riders go that route and it’s a help. They make kits but they easy to throw together without one. Also keep your tire fresh and your balance point can still go back a bit. The idea is not hiding behind the throttle out. Great job bud!

      Jon's Moto Garage what’s your gear ratio on the final drive? You have a chain conversion so that’s definitely a step in the right direction. Also what kind of rear tire are you running?

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  5 років тому

      @@dynahack505 Not sure on the gear ratio. Didnt think to ask the dude when I bought it and haven't checked myself. Rear tire was a Michelin commander 2. Its now a slick. Lol. I plan on trying the shinko 777 next. What are your thoughts?
