Foreman's words go beyond the adage "Hey, ya' just gotta have faith." Of course we do! But, if we say that to someone who's hurting (including ourselves), it can easily fall on the deaf ears of despair. This song is a testament to the power of simply keeping that line of communication open, even in times of doubt. It reminds us that Jesus desires honesty over verbosity. And it's as raw as I've ever heard in a lyric. Pray it with me.
I believe Jesus totally understands, has compassion on us. Yes, agree He appreciates our honesty. I think on the verses, “Pour our my heart to God, Cast all my cares to Him, Come to Me all who are weary, He has compassion on the multitude cos He knew they were without a Shepherd, without guidance. . .” I honestly believe that God won’t actually be disapproving, angry or strike us down if we tell Him how we Really feel, even if we’re scared. That’s what the ‘secret place’ is for - “ Can He reach is there, on the silence, at work, washing the pots, gardening, cleaning the toilet!” Yep, pretty sure He can. Especially when tears are falling down our face quietly. Yeah, He knows. And it’s ok to tell Him. He is a very understanding, compassionate God. I wonder, does a pure heart mean an honest heart, even if it’s in pain and crying out, and wondering, “ Why, what’s going on?”

Listened to this for the first time on my bedroom floor the other night, and I could feel the tears sliding past my temples, into my hair, behind my ears. A little bit of light was coming from my tabletop Christmas tree, and in that room it was just me, and Jon's voice, and the Jesus he's singing about. What a song.

Whenever I called out to God this past 2020 all alone He always eventually showed up and in the midst of the loneliest year of my life God showed up for me whenever I reached out to Him and it’s been the closest time with God ever
This is a psalm. A David psalm of the 21sr century. It lyrically, and hauntingly, captured my silent pleas and delta doubts. David doubted. Peter doubted. Thomas doubted. Thank you, God, that you do hear by silent pleas and hold me despite my doubts - and especially in times like these when my feelings don’t match what I know to be true.
I thought the same thing ... I remembered David's honesty in the presence of God, showing his fear, his despair, his weakness and his doubts and I think that was exactly why he was called a man after God's heart...

Doubt is something rarely seen in christian music and the only comparable song that sings about doubt is truth im standing on by Leanna Crawford. Doubt is a very real thing in most Christians lives and it can be emotionally based or just intellectually based there can be doubts and be no underlying reason. Its literally the scariest thing anyone could and will ever go through in their walk in Christ. It doesn't just feel like he's not there but like he never was. I'm glad Jon wrote this song it is a great reminder that God has His reasons for things we don't understand and that your not alone in your struggle with doubt. The Christian music industry needs more of these kinds of songs

Listening to this a week after my best friend committed suicide. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who struggles with these questions of doubt, especially amid tragedy.
😪😪 hear this song after three days ago someone I love dearly committed suicide too. She was 20 years old and she was a believer too. Now too many questions: WHY?

You are reminding me that I can bring Jesus into my anxiety and depression and let him weep with me and gently guide me back into his loving arms and we can walk together through this.

Thank you for this. My baby girl died 6 months ago and this is one of the few songs that reaches into the deep places of my heart and gives words to what my shattered, yet hopeful, faith feels like. I wish we all have each other this kind of freedom have doubts.

Thank you jon foreman. You have captured my heart in so many stages of my life. 💓 I have certainly felt lately like my faith is gone.
I wish "Christian" radio stations would play songs like this...

I opened my phone, and saw I had an email from Jon's site saying new music had gone up. I was ecstatic, and immediately opened Spotify. "Education" played, and I loved it; so punchy and cool as ice. "Red and Gold" played, and it was so meditative, reminded me of "Let Your Love Be Strong."
Then this song starts, and the first chords hit, and immediately I know its gonna be different. Save for "Mercy's War," this is the only solo song by Jon that he actually says the Savior's name, so that was something else that set this song apart.
I cried after that first line. Its so blunt, but so perfect for the emotion that I felt during that time; it made me feel like I was sitting with my Friend and Counselor, telling him how broken his child is.

Jon has meant so much to me in my walk with the Lord, and I attest my faith to him; without his music, I don't think I would be a Christian today. I know that I will never be as special to him as he is to me, but I remember a dream that I had about two months ago. Jon and I were sitting somewhere, and I remember we were writing a song together. There was a definite melody, and we were both playing guitar, just jamming out. Right after I woke up, I couldn't remember a single thing we wrote. I believe that one day, when we're both on the other side, we'll meet, and finish writing that song.

This song is so raw. It reminds me of the grace God gives me and how I have to extend that grace and loving kindness to my husband who’s world is holding on by a tiny thread right now. As a nurse, I’m a fixer and a I try to do everything that I can to lighten and share his burdens, but I can only show him Christ through my love and actions and even my best intentions fall short of God’s standard. ❤️🙏

Finally...a "Christian" song I can relate to more often then the others...because I live and work in the "real" world of pain....and can't ignore it. Jesus knew of it too...and felt it the most...especially when, for a brief moment in time...He, as the Very Word of God...was forsaken on the cross....for our sins. I love that Jon Foreman's songs...have always been so real. He's one of my go-to singers for expressing my thoughts about and to God. This song...what has been unspoken in many of our hearts (though God has known and has cared)....I think this song might reach more of the "unsaved"...non-believers...than any of the joyous songs ever could. So glad that you have used your gift, JF....we are glad...God must be glad....

How dare you say doubt to Jesus the savior of the world?
The melody is so simple and sweet. I love the honesty. The song of my life. I know He hears me, though. I get desperate at times, but in the end, He is listening to me. He cares. I've found the light. I've finally found Jesus. Years of listening to pastors and reading the Word, but they never registered till now. They finally found their way to my heart. I've searched for Jesus for years, trying to find Him on my own. This year, recently, I've finally found Him through His forgiveness and His mercy. He loves me. Keep searching, don't give up on God. It's all worth it.

Mankind will do what it has always done since the fall...hurt each other, in innumerable ways. God stands apart from the blame but at the same time inhabits, heals, restores, and redeems all hearts who give Him a permanent home. It's ok to have the doubts, but if anyone has them, there can still be peace that passes understanding found only in Jesus. It's a daily getting-to-know-His-heart in communion and relationship-building with the one who is described in Isaiah 40 "To whom then will you compare to God, or what likeness compare with Him?...His understanding is unsearchable...Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
