With the right teacher, Hamlet is absolutely incredible. There is tragedy, humor, horror, love, revenge, action, and a hilarious crazy prince. What is not to love? /:) It is all about have the right context and experience.
The final gag is sooo far ahead of its time: an AI-powered psychiatrist computer, trained on faulty data, hovering from a drone, getting blown up by a nurse with a rocket launcher. This sketch is from **1974.** 🤯
It was also during the final years of Vietnam, when computers, drones and other such 'new tech' were becoming mainstays. The Python team likely took notes and realized the probable progression from there, though they still deserve accolades for being able to predict what stuff like ChatGPT is now proving capable of (to a degree at least).
"Ah, so it's all about sex, is it?" Ladies and Gentleman, Dr. Freud meets Hamlet. (Interesting though how they identified them all as "bogus psychiatrists".) Brilliant!
Freud loved Hamlet, he mentions it at least once IIRC. Shakespeare basically invented the modern mind in that play, and Freud understood that. He gets a bad rap but he's not just "sex sex oedipus phallus sex", he was a very literate and cultured person, and a great writer to boot.
One if my all time favorite Python sketches...brilliantly silly, from the scene of the car onwards. "I have a copy of Psychiatry Today in my bag, which I think is pretty convincing..." LOVE. IT.
Making me laugh my ass off and taking me back to the seventies made this hilarious beyond control. Thank you for a quasi self-deprecating bit that makes psychiatric machinations bring at least a smile on all faces. Thanks Doc.
Dorothy Lin I'm quite pleased to be of service, Ms. Lin. Now, Dorothy, please keep all of this hush, hush private! Not to include establishing a bridge of trust with the patient. It would reduce transference and countertransference because of its similarity to speed dating.
I like the way I came here expecting a sketch about Hamlet and it was almost entirely composed of nonsensical surrealist silliness. Welcome to Monty Python, I suppose.
Sir, I will not argue this point due to the fact that you are such a leader in the world of literature. You obviously must be one in order to dictate the literary canon. I can see why you are studying and most certainly not on UA-cam. You are totally right about the Lion King too, man. I have no doubt that a Disney movie is better than a timeless work by the greatest inventor of our language.
Yes and no, I am currently studying Hamlet and I find that if you don't pay attention to what they're saying and whos saying it, you can read three lines and have no idea what's up. Its not a matter of stupidity or laziness, its a matter of patience and with todays immidiate gratification, many people have trouble with taking the time to sit down and really think about what your reading and taking in.
That actually happened in a hospital I worked in. A patient posed as a doctor and stitched up the leg of one of our roofers. It was a fascinating court case!
Ah. Yes, well...... i WAS going to share this on my Facebook page, but uuuuuuh....well, er, the bit about the girl in the bed.......((ehem)). Still one of my favorite Python sketches!
They have computers that give initial diagnoses, in some hospitals nowadays. How prophetic. More accurate than a doctor, can even tell you your prognosis, prescribe treatment and even when your expected to push up the daisies!
Now just wait one minute, just because you like Shakespeare does not mean the rest of the world likes Shakespeare. Where is the fucking rule book that says in order to appreciate art you must appreciate Shakespeare? Art changes with each generation. Oedipus Medea Hamlet John Proctor Michael Corleone Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader What do these characters have in common? Tragedy, these characters are the same person only different name and face. You have Hamlet I have The Godfather.
@MrBandBProductions: I appreciate the contribution that Hamlet made to acting/entertainment field. However, it is very outdated. Let me give you this analogy: I can appreciate what the first ever telephone did for the world. Without the first ever telephone we wouldn't have the modern communication easiness that we have today. But, do we still use old style telephones? No! Every thing eventually progresses and becomes better. Hamlet and other theatrical productions are no different.
came here for help with my highschool english study of hamlet.... needless to say it was of immense help
Of course
I am reading your comment 7 years later and laughing at it more than the video, thank you 😂❤
@@AhJodie Don't fall for it, she didn't come for Hamlet, she came for the sex of course!
I learned from Gilligan's Island!!
"...the one person you can't fool, is your mother."
Clever Monty Python team, very clever and subtle.
With the right teacher, Hamlet is absolutely incredible. There is tragedy, humor, horror, love, revenge, action, and a hilarious crazy prince. What is not to love? /:) It is all about have the right context and experience.
It’s got something for everybody. If you do it right, it’s a very funny black comedy and a great detective story to boot.
And later on, we'll be talking to a man who DOES gardening

Agree....simply astonishing.
Les Griffiths
And not ANY nurse. That was {{{swoon}}} Carol Cleveland. So ... I can just imagine it ... me and Carol, she's got her legs on the mantelpiece ...
@@mikerodent3164 My thoughts exactly!!!

Just goes to show that there were still some gems in that half-season without Cleese.

1970s Carol Cleveland just make everything better.
Surely Caroline Clivage
Shakespeare AND Monty Python RULE!
Yes, very accurate indeed! Completely reminiscent of my own doctoral work in clinical psychology at UCLA. Monty Python never fails to succeed!

wonderful

So that is what Shakespere is all about. Intresting.
As a _genuine_ psychiatrist I found this sketch... whoops, gotta run, people in white coats have just entered the building....
So that's why Hamlet's so screwed up...
"I want to make something of my life."
"No, I don't know that bit."
A visit from Terry Gilliam too! 3:46 and dragged out like the other wackos 😂😂😂
All I know about Hamlet I learned from this sketch and Hamlet Goes Business.

Yes, okay, you have both their legs up on the mantle piece...
You got her legs up on the mantelpiece!
OUT!
Ah, Hamlet as an early version of Prince Herbert from The Holy Grail!
This is like eating grapes whilst they are glued to the ceiling.
Little bit of marx brothers in there

Good comedy has several layers to it.
Oh, I just LOVE them . They are the best !!!!!!
I get it now. It's about theorists and critics who only analyse Hamlet from a sexual point of view.
Exactly my experience if psychiatry. I've always enjoyed documentaries.

A sketch I've never seen! Or don't remember.
It must've been from the final season, after John Cleese left.
That actually happened in a hospital I worked in. A patient posed as a doctor and stitched up the leg of one of our roofers. It was a fascinating court case!
they all are indeed psych artist
I shall never trust a psychiatrist again.
So, you trusted them before?
Daw, no wonder poor Ham's off his rocker.
LOL, this is one of my favorites
I find it ironic that Chapman played the most straight-laced characters on the show.
Legs don't belong on the mantel piece, someone will get burned 😂😂😂
So yeah, all you really need to know about Hamlet is in this sketch.
Thamel!
Ah. Yes, well...... i WAS going to share this on my Facebook page, but uuuuuuh....well, er, the bit about the girl in the bed.......((ehem)). Still one of my favorite Python sketches!
Yes, it is. Maybe you should string a few herrings from trees, then come back in and watch this again.
The end was very justified, as always!
Never saw this before!
Fair few quotes from Hamlet though, although he didn’t get as far as ‘ I knew him well Horatio’ 😊
Absurd "reality"!
Well, better this for Hamlet rather than Rocko with Dr. Ben Dover.
Classic brilliance.
@ElderScrollsObliv Well, thank you for including the time in your comment, but I'm fairly sure we can find the end of the video without help.

If the bogus psychiatrists are patients there, does that mean this borders on a literal “inmates running the asylum” situation?
Don´t tell them , Alwyn2112, please don´t!
Its his character from Holy Grail!
So you've got her legs up on the mantlepiece...

@katie shuck- good point :) and yes I do believe that's a big part of it. Best of luck with the study of it dear one :)
This final series of MPFC wasn't the same without John Cleese.
Yet there were many wonderful things in the fourth series
This sketch did not at all go in the direction which I had expected from the premise.
Not Hamlet!
Thamel!
(insert Captain America "I understood that reference!" here)
Out! Out!
The computer sounds like LittleKuriboh. I wonder if he got his Marik-voice from here.

These guys were funnier on Second City Television.
Spoiler: this was actually a Mossad operation, as Mr. Hamlet was in fact, Akmed Al Habib, noted Hezbollah leader.

Are all the psychiatrists dirty minded?
I think it's a parody of Freud
DOGcity99 Oh. My mistake.
What's that pathetic music at 00:13-00:23?
This is the only season of the show I never really care much about. Don't think I've even finished watching it. No Cleese, no Python!
