- Hello Everyone!
A lot of you requested I do this video so here it is! It was super fun to make. Originally when I recorded it, it was 1 hour 30 minutes! I have broken it up into 3 videos hence the different outros :-)
It's really fascinating going through the years and above anything else, I feel like the exercises are more technically "fancy" not necessarily harder but just fancier and the extrmre purity of Vaganova has also changed. Again not necessarily for the worst but as the time has changed so have the dancers. What's mot obvious is the ethical demands and exaggerated use of upper body as we progress through. Have a watch!
These are always just my opinions and I respect all ballerinas in the videos.

To add a bit to the discussion:
- The little hops is most likely something that wasn't seen as something bad, since Vaganova herself says in her book that you should start a tour almost like jumping into it, and also the italian pointe technique (which was taken by Agrippina too) encourages both, hopping up and hopping down, not even to mention the tours with plié-relevé which encourage to go down and up at mid "pirouette". So, I wouldn't say dancers before weren't as strong as now, just different teaching philosophies for tours.
- The choregraphic "change" in exams has more to do with the ballet world and the Vaganova's directors. I know that since Tsiskaridze came to VA, it's been encouraged a lot that the girls showcase a more choregraphic exam every time, to "show the world how well prepared their students are for the theatre" vs what was thought in the past, which was that the end of the school was just the beginning of your career as an artist, which was essentially made once you enter the theatre, so the exam should reflect your training and technique, and how well you know the academic technique to execute each movement.
Yeh I understand why the hops “whilst on demi pointe” ( not talking about an actual take off into a pirouette or a plié releve ) are there but for me personally I never found them to instil a good habit so I tried my best not to.
As far as the exams, again I understand where the thought is behind it but even with the simpler exercises it never crosses our minds they don’t look ready for the theatre just because they are less flashy.. They ALWAYS look ready by that point and are so strong. So I don’t know if it’s strictly necessary to be incredibly fancy with the exams but I will admit it’s fun to watch for sure and definitely feels like a performance . 😊

I was shocked to hear you say that even the Vaganova school allows Gaynor Mindens now, and I'm actually really happy to hear it. I'd love to hear what you think of the new shoes that have replaceable parts, they might become a real game-changer in term of affordability in the long term for serious young ballet students without a company shoe budget yet.
Dancers as well as becoming more expressive also seem to hold themselves more gracefully within their upper bodies. Arms at times seem to extend to, shape and hold the aura.
Renata Shakirova graduated in 2015, so this must be her 7th year exam. I think Renata’s year was the last year that had the 9th year and if I remember correctly there were also students graduating from 8th year in 2015.
Darcey 💗 my childhood idol. I am still happy to see her, she always have some special energy, one of a kind.
Later in life I was kinda sad that she was not trained in Vaganova method, It would be better for her body and her greatness would pop even more.

When I was accepted into a training program with Russian teachers in Upstate NY 1974, I was 11, we were not allowed to wear any skirts, leg warmers. We had a strict dress code. I had come from a tap, jazz , acro, baton twirling competition studio from age 3. If I didn’t have this training I know for a fact I wouldn’t have had the long dance, film, tv, Bway, Rockette career I had. Ive never stopped taking classes either even though I was not in a ballet company ever. I’m still dancing & I’m 60. ❤

@@balletwithisabella I would love that. I used to judge dance competitions B4 they started getting popular up until 2001. I ran the dance program intensive division at NY OffStage from 1999-2001 in NYC.
I find it interesting when two siblings are both talented enough to be at the vaganova like Alina Somova and her sister and Maria and Sonia Khoreva. I would imagine the chances of that happening to be very low but it seems to happen.
There's some videos of Ulyana Lopatkina walking through a number of variations and their details in a studio on pointe, in a tutu, her head covering and everything here on UA-cam if you haven't checked them out already! I just think they're gems and that you would appreciate the footage. If it were of interest to you perhaps you could translate one of the clips just so we can get a peek into her brain and what she offered. Though I understand if you were to keep it for yourself, it's kind of special.

Hi Isabella!! I absolutely love your videos. I was wondering if you have any tips for getting back into ballet after many years away and overcoming a serious illness and injury? I did have a long history with ballet, but I am now 38, recovered from cancer, and recovering from a neck injury. Just curious if you have any tips that will help me safely get back!
Did it happen of ballerinas not be approved on the exams? What does happen then?
You are obvously very fond of your days in Vaganova. Whad do you miss the most about those days?
I was adopted from Russia, and I dance , but the comment about the swedish/Finnish girl was interesting because everyone says I'm the stereotypical Russia: thin, tall, blonde/blue eyes. But honestly I don't understand how that is because all the beautiful Russian dancers are darker haired, and vary in height... Idk I'm 2% Scandinavian so I think it somehow altered my Russian part somehow (me being 98 % Eastern European).

In 1998, Darcy Bussel would have been ten years into her professional career. Just wanted to clarify.
I think you do Darcy Bussel a diservicewhen you said that she would have done well if she had gone to Vaganova.lets not forget she was a Prima Ballerina here and a wonderfull dancer.i know you trained here but can we have just a little bit of praise for our British Ballet schools.
I think you’ve misunderstood me. I mean she is of the body type and height that the vaganova really like so she would have ALSO done well there as she has similar bodies. My comments were in no way disparaging to the royal ballet school.
Darcey was at the royal ballet at a very good time. I wish I was there when she was.
@balletwithisabella . Oh I'm so sorry for that please forgive me.i have just watched it again and i and I see how I have got it wrong.i jumped the gun dident I?. I have nothing at all against the Russian Dancer's.Ulyana Lopatkina being my all time favourite.so sad when she retired.also Natalia Osipova.sometimes tho when I watch any vlogs about the Russian dancer's some of the comments from Russian people are a bit insulting about dancer's from other countries. @@balletwithisabella I think what is also important , Darcy was at the Royal Ballet School 1982- 87, so was way ahead of her time.
