 Pteridophytes are also known as Vascular cryptogams
 Vascular plant due to present of xylem and phloem and are first terrestrial organism to have well developed vascular tissue.
 Cryptogams; non-flowering plants which lacks seed and they reproduce by spores.
 They are the first true land plants and commonly called as reptiles of plant kingdom / botanical snakes. Like reptiles are the first true land animals which have evolved after the amphibians. In the same way, pteridophytes are the first true land plants that have evolved after bryophytes (amphibians of the plant kingdom). That is why, they are commonly called as reptiles of plant kingdom.
 The name was originally given to those groups of plants which have well developed pinnate or frond like leaves.
 Origin: These plants originated about 400 million years ago in the Silurian period of the Palaeozoic era and formed dominant vegetation on the earth during the Devonian period.
 Number: They are represented by about 400 living and fossil genera and some 10,500 species.
