  • Start Up and fly-by of a Hawker Sea Fury that dropped into our airport this past Saturday. Sorry for the weird-looking propeller, this is caused by the shutter "Strobing" in time with the prop's blades...making them appear to stop or turn very slowly while the engine is running.
    Gonna get a new/better camera here shortly that ought to let me eliminate this little illusion ! The audio is still pretty good, though.

    Gorgeous.
    Interesting how different the sleeve-valve Centaurus sounds at low engine speeds from the P & W R2800 or Wright R3350 18 cylinder radials. With more rpms, they start to sound more similar as the valve train noise, or lack thereof, becomes less of a factor. All 3 were, and are, awesome engines that powered some truly iconic planes. There's something about big radial aircraft engines that I just love. I'm sure there are quite a few of you watching this that understand!

    I’ve my late father’s photo album. He was on HMS Eagle in the 50’s. There are many photographs of these, some crashing and a couple with Dutch markings on them. Though he liked the Wyvern, the Sea Fury was one of his most favourite aircraft.
    Good to see.

      Thank you for your comment, Robert!
      Yeah, they're beautiful aircraft. If you still have your father's photos, I'm sure that there are plenty of aviation buffs who'd love to see them!
      Take care, and thank you again!

    Thank you...yeah, I nearly spilled my coffee when one of my buds called to say there was a Sea Fury parked at the airport !
    I've always loved the Mustangs and Bearcats,,,but this Big Dog is up there with them. The pilot was a good guy too...patiently answering questions I'm sure he'd been asked dozens of times before.
    I GOT to do something with that shutter speed though. Guess a fancier video camera is the only answer.
    Thanks again for your post!

      Thanks for sharing this nice video. These planes are very rare and to see such vintage aircraft restored and in action is truly a treat.

      williampaz too bad they cannot make a reliable engine for it. This one 4 blade right hand turning prop says its an American engine, R2800 PW ???

    Great colour scheme....extra dark sea grey, and sky.....and lovely markings. Correct for a Fury. Would have liked to have seen a five bladed prop on a beauty like this to finish her off to perfection.

      Wrong engine . The sleeve valve engine final drive spun the 5 blade prop the opposite direction.

    No apologies needed regards the 'prop. That there was possibly the largest propeller fitted to a piston engine aircraft of the era due to the available power from the Bristol Radial engine

      soaringtractor Mr Tractor I admire Your knowledge but Ur attitude sucks large..The 4 blade configuration correctly makes it an American engine retro fit..You are not always right but You were bang on the money on that.!!.Just be a bit humble.You get more admirers that way...Nobody is perfect...We celebrate warbird technology because of awsome power,character and speed of evolution of the various aircraft during that War..I hate wars!!
      They are destructive and forever traumatic and are caused by hidden powers and shakers that are not elected by Us Masses.They cause all this shit n inequality in the World...So Cuss them out.They are the greedy Corporate bastards Unseen and unaccountable...Us ordinary ones just like warbirds of all the Combatants.I hate all the jingoism!!,My Mustang's better than Your 109 etc!!!..All of them a/c mostly fantastic.none perfect,some better than others,some worse but all awesome in some way..Anyway,trying to appeal to Your better nature and not be bitchin'.Stay knowledgeable but try to be nice and constructive!!..Ciao!!

    For that prop strobing, try a shutter speed around 1/160 or even lower. Higher shutter speeds (above 1/200 or so) can give you a clean image of each blade in each frame, rather than a blur of whirling blades

    • @Winter_Sportster
      @Winter_Sportster  8 років тому

      Yeah, that was the problem with the little Sony Handi-Cam I was using. I couldn't change the shutter setting with that little 'birthday party recorder', but have since bought myself a Panasonic camera that I'm still getting used to.

    • @Killerplanes
      @Killerplanes 8 років тому +1

      That's cool- now you can shoot vids with blurry blades! (It's those little things in life...) Come to think of it, you could probably use that setting on the handicam to film the beach scene from Saving Private Ryan. Or get that hard-edge jjjittery feel on the kid blowing out the candles.

    Sea Fury,da steckt viel Focke Wulf 190 drin, ein klassse Propeller Jagtflugzeug, so hätte der Jäger und als 2 Sitzer Aufklärer und Torpetoflugzeug des deutschen Flugzeugträger Graf Zeppelin sein müssen, die Aufgabe der Stuka's würde eine Maschine in der art der Corsair übernehmen.

    too bad that the Bristol Centaurus engine was replaced from a banal R3350...(the original Centaurus use a 5 blades propeller and turn anticlockwise...)

    • @BJBFOREST
      @BJBFOREST 5 років тому +2

      another clue is that the Centaurus engine had a coffman starter,,, they sort of start quite abruptly . This engine turned the opposite direction and looked like it was cranked to start... It doesn't worry me that it has a different make of engine, it really has no bearing on the finished product for civilian use, as combat power and service ceiling is irrelevant and ensures that this aircraft continues to fly. Considering that the Yak 3 now flies with Allison, The Buchon with RR,...hell even the Ruskies fitted the P40 with Klimov V12 engines when they wore out the Allisons and had no spares.... Th Czhek built 109s had to use different engines .... The fact is that USA made thousands of these aircraft engines and they are available. If you cant love the want you want , love the one you have...

    Nice video if you like the radio communications drowning out the sound of the beautiful Bristol Centaurus radial. And please, if others want to produce a good video of a plane with one or four radials, like Wright 3350, or a Prat and Whitney 4360, or a 12 cylinder Allison or Merlin, please leave out the music, back ground noise or radio communications.

    • @jeffwiltshire
      @jeffwiltshire 6 років тому +3

      Sea Fury ran a 5 bladed prop on the Centaurus engine. This has four so I would assume it has a US Radial in it.

    • @fourfortyroadrunner6701
      @fourfortyroadrunner6701 2 роки тому +1

      This is most obviously and certainly NOT a Centaurus. The Brit engine turns the opposite direction of most US radials.
