If you were following Figure skating in the 1990s, you will most likely remember Philippe Candeloro, he was really one of a kind. His technique wasn't the best, but his performances were passionate and brilliant. They said at the time that he was loved by the audience (women lol) and not so much appreciated by the judges but he did win 2 olympic medals so in my opinion the judges always saw the artistry in his performances even if his technique was lacking. Great memories rewatching this performance! Merci Philippe!
He loved the audience and the audience loved him. A true showman. Some skaters even appear to be scared of the audience and it makes a difference in their performance.
Exactly What I feel, if I am not wrong He was bronce medal, but he got the gold from the public, the people did not stop of clapping. I rememeber how long the clapping were, and how he got out to skate again and again and even then I felt it was not enought, I really wanted to see him fight again. I even remember that some of the judges who are usually very neutral stood up excitedly when they saw the steps of the sword duel. Maybe noone remember the gold medal Who i am sure he really deserves it, but Philips candeloro was there and He was unforgettable
He's in my opinion, and to this day, the most charismatic skater to have ever been on ice. If you were not living in this era, his popularity was insane, this guy would steal your girl on sight. In Japan he had to flee the fans, which is not surprising when hearing the crowd.
I grew up in the 90s and loved watching figureskating with my ma. My eyes were always glued to the screen when Phillippe Candeloro was skating because I thought he was sooo handsome 🫠🤭😂❤
@@annoyingbanananaHe got grown-up men into figure skating because at some point in France, we were all taking notes about how tf he did this and what to do. We're talking about a guy who is very charming and who knows it.
The footwork! He is so charming and a risk taker. This performance is unforgettable! He held your attention and told a story that was exciting. It's one of the best ever.
Not only eye candy for the ladies but he actually put on a show for the audience . Had a character for the whole performance . You weren’t waiting for a jump you were into his whole performance .
Sorry if this is disappointing but the guy is known in France for making gross (and often sexists) comments all the time. He is what we call "un beauf" (if you don't know what "beauf" means, this definition sums it up pretty well : " [it's] a French term describing a person thought to be a combination of vulgar, unsophisticated, unintelligent, arrogant, uncaring, and chauvinistic, without any taste for etiquette or good manners."). Basically he's good when he's ice-skating and keeping his mouth shut.
Encountered him at the 1994 Europeans. We were all waiting for an accredited bus in freezing Copenhagen. Even though there was limited space, he let everyone else get on first rather than push through like other VIPs. A class act.
A German commentator said in Nagano in 1998: "I would give him an Oscar...", so would I. The program is a masterpiece and it is unforgettable! Until today it is still exciting to see Philippe Candeloro skating as D`Artagnan and the music makes me cry every time!!!!
the way he worked the crowd was sublime: they were all so invested in his story. Chen was technically amazing, but his final coreography didn't have much footwork at all. Let it be clear: I can't skate straight to save my life, so I'm speakng as an entertained spectator.
@@emanuelemarchisio3818 It is really amazing to receive a reply to my comment after 6 years - thank you! I got the feeling that Philippe Candeloro is back again. I`m fully with you: the French guy was a great showman and had that certain something that other figure skaters today don`t have. I admire Hanyu and Chen - they are technically fantastic but their performance is not so spectacular. I don´t get goosebumps anymore...And I think we all have to accept today that the technical merit is more important then the artistic result.
The part I'm always waiting for, maybe not the most difficult (I'm not a skater so I 'm not sure) but, exactly what makes the performance very very special.
God, I miss the figure skating era that Candeloro ushered in. He encouraged skaters to fill their programmes with personality and showmanship. One of the greats on the sport for sure.
22 years later and I still remember this sequence. I was 13 when I watched this and was completely mesmerised and amazed by this. Never forgotten it, simply brilliant!
Well, l was in my 30s expecting my second child. I was screaming and jumping up like crazy, almost went into labor. Just sent to my daughter, letting her know this performance, she nearly came 3 months early! 🤷🏽😂🙏🏽
i remember watching this live on tv. i was 13. we were visiting my uncle and his family at their house that day. all of my family members wanted to watch the event at some point. excluding me as i was not a fan of figure skating at all. i was bored and not really paying attention when we werr watching it. but when Phillippe appeared and performed his number i was literally starring at the tv and was like "oh wow!" 😀 still not interested in figure skating but its good to see his performance again here on youtube as it was something special my now 24 years older brain still remembers. should have won the gold medal.

This is what the current obsession with the technical aspects has robbed us of. I can watch any number of skaters demonstrating how many turns they can make on a jump. After a while they all blend together and it becomes irrelevant.. A performance like this, however, no matter if there may be a technical flaw or two, is what I want to see in skating. Give me more of this and way less of "skater A did four turns and skater B only did three, so skater A is better, even though skater B drew me into his/her performance and told me a story I could invest myself in. OK, curmudgeon rant over.
I couldn't agree more. Every time I watch the Russian nationals my heart sinks when mere teenagers are expected to do the quad, and when they miss it's disheartening all round. Whoever heard of any sport where you scored double in the second half anyway? It's time to bring back the national judges and scoring the viewer can instantly understand.
@@stevebbuk You don't score double in second half, just 10% bonus on last three jumping passes and it was a rule introduced to encourage skaters to put jumps throughout their programs. In the olden days Plushenko would open with two quads and two triple axels, and then have no jumps in the last minute and and half of his programs. overall the rule adds more excitement, and in addition rewards difficulty as jumping on tired legs is insanely hard compared to shooting jumps off the top of the program. In general the 6.0 judging wasn't that fair imo, even when executed right. For example, if you stepped out of a jump you got basically no credit for that jump - so Timothy Goebels got little credit for a triple axel that he stepped out of even though it was fully rotated. And whilst there were the charming skaters such as Candeloro, much of the "choreography" that was rewarded during that era was two footed pantomiming and the odd flowery arm, and very little reward for deep edges and high levels of skating quality. Step sequences tended to be full of simple toesteps and fast feet rather than difficult quality of edges and turns.
I was 18 when this performance took place. Never forgot neither Philippe or the excitement of watching him. He was totally wonderful and unforgettable! 25 years laters and I'm still amazed and remember him as no other.
That is the problem today. In trying to iron out the problems in scoring, the new rules have made the technical score so heavily proscribed. For example, that change-foot sit at the end would not even be marked today. It would not be counted as an element, as the rule say that the skating leg must be parallel with the ice or lower. This means it would be a wasted move in the technical score and might just as well have never been done. You would get the double chevron of death on your P.D.F.!

Philippe brings a different edge to competitive skating, and an opportunity to opens up professional skating to create a new category. The choreography, entertaining, masculine and truly manly. My tall dark and handsome knight on skates.Well done.
I miss Scott Hamilton as a commentator. Wish he was still doing it. So nice to see someone really skate a true artistic program and still do all the jumps.
Watching this in 2021 and remembering viewing this live the night he performed this routine. Phillippe as D'Artagnan was magical and the sword fight footwork was brilliant. What a masterpiece this was.
I was watching this live because my friend told me to watch Philippe Candeloro. I swooned over the fighting scene and it still makes me smile 22 years later. I still watch this a few times a year. This is truly a masterpiece.
He is perfect. Such powerful skating, such artistry! He knows what he does. Today everybody runs behind jumping and figure skating today lost the charming what it was in past. Thanks, we have a possibility to travel back and to watch the performances of such Masters as Philip.
I saw it live on TV as a girl and figure skater myself. Of all the incredible world class routines I've seen, this one is my all time fave. Phillips it's on a show and embodies his character. I just adore his wild manly skating style also. What a hon!!!!

Stunning and brilliant! The Master: Philippe Candeloro. This is what performance, art and flair and pure star quality is all about. He IS D'Artagnon! And Errol Flynn and Captain Sparrow all rolled into one gorgeous form. Seen a lot of wonderful figure skating but this . . . Oh yeah. Such as these should never grow old.
Wow! Just watched him again after wat watching Chen (best technical skate ever) and Hanyu (amazingly graceful) again last week. One thing's for sure...figure skating has changed, and I sorely miss you Philippe. Even Brian Orser's 'The Bolt' puts today's skaters to shame. Too bad that corrupt judges brought us to this stage. And it's so obvious that Philippe worked hard at skating. This program brought me to tears...totally moving...totally under-rated skater.
The most masculine sexiest skater to ever grace a skating rink! I relive this moment everytime l watch this video!! I was 6 months pregnant. Never relive that, that's for sure! 😂😂🤷🏽🙏🏽🎊
i don't even remember who was the gold medalist of nagano olympics, but i still clearly remember this fantastic performance. what a showmanship! i see why he got love of japanese ladies. he's a man!
Mon Dieu! Watched it then and cried. Watching it now and still thinking this is one of the best male OG LPs ever. It has got everything that actually matters: great music, incredible synchronizing to it, unmatched footwork and that amazing presence of a guy who just loves skating and that is all he cares about. Not to mention how appropriate the whole Philippe-d'Artagnan match is.
I'm watching this in 2022 for the first time. Where have I been? Lol smh. Now I understand the comments I've seen about people missing the more artistic, creative routines of yesteryear. I agree. My favorite part was the fencing sequence! 😁
Geez this guy had the ladies in his hands 2:05 they scream with him just smiling and bowing 2:17 they scream with him imitating swinging his sword after that it just gets too many to count how many times they cheer for him haha best and most memorable program that year
agators212 He was enormously popular in Japan so he absolutely had the crowd in his hands. The girls just loved him. He couldn’t have asked for a better performance at a better time in a better place
The best program in Nagano and one of the best of all time. It's a pity that Candeloro always(alomost) fell at least once. He could be an olympic champion with a cleaner jumping! I adored watching him!
It’s difficult. His skate is good, style is good, and also with an art feeling. But his difficulties are not, without four, landing still has problems.
It's amazing. His jumping technique is "out of control" as Scott Hamilton would put it but he still managed to have 2 bronze medals in the biggest figure skating stage. He just knew how to execute an Olympic medal-winning performance that have eluded world and/or national champions like Kurt Browning, Todd Eldredge,
He was always so creative with his programs, so much artistry and inventivity. If only he had been a tad more technical on some jumps, he could have been Gold.

This is the figure skating I love. The one that tells a story, not the one that does as much ticks as they can
das stimmt! Ich habe mich auch verliebt--Eleganz, Können, Charme, Freude!
Me, too!
Absolument !
Philippe brings a different edge to competitive skating, and an opportunity to opens up professional skating to create a new category. The choreography, entertaining, masculine and truly manly. My tall dark and handsome knight on skates.Well done.
🙏🏽🇨🇵
I miss Scott Hamilton as a commentator. Wish he was still doing it. So nice to see someone really skate a true artistic program and still do all the jumps.
Yes.
Watching this in 2021 and remembering viewing this live the night he performed this routine. Phillippe as D'Artagnan was magical and the sword fight footwork was brilliant. What a masterpiece this was.
Still one of the best programs to date!!
True story! I remember it like it was yesterday.
J'adore !
I was watching this live because my friend told me to watch Philippe Candeloro. I swooned over the fighting scene and it still makes me smile 22 years later. I still watch this a few times a year. This is truly a masterpiece.
When it came to showmanship, nobody could touch Philippe Candeloro!! Even in the golden age of 90s figure skating (which I miss!)
There are a lot of good skaters today too, but I miss this creative kind of programs so much!
The current rules of figure skating no longer allow this kind of artistic freedom.
I could watch this guy anytime of the day whenever he is just one brilliant French skater...😊❤
He is perfect. Such powerful skating, such artistry! He knows what he does. Today everybody runs behind jumping and figure skating today lost the charming what it was in past. Thanks, we have a possibility to travel back and to watch the performances of such Masters as Philip.
Just saw this for the first time in 2019 and got fascinated how he tells a story on ice! I'm in love with this routine!
First time for me too, 2020.
I saw it live on TV as a girl and figure skater myself. Of all the incredible world class routines I've seen, this one is my all time fave. Phillips it's on a show and embodies his character. I just adore his wild manly skating style also. What a hon!!!!
@@emilygraham9968 I saw it years ago. My husband streamed it.

Magic! This is so French... ! This is beautiful. At 3:59, goosebumps, insane sequence
Except that his father Luigi is Italian. The surname Candeloro is of Italian origin. Of course Philppe was born and raised in France.
@@dina113east Her mother is french
@@dina113east so he's french.
As simple as that ;)
@@evok993 If one parent is French and one is Italian, that would make him French and Italian. A person's ethnicity is from both parents. If a person is French and Chinese, that person would be French and Chinese, no matter where they were born.

He's born and raised in France, so he's french, and it would be the same if his parents were both asians.
By the way, french is a nationality, not an ethnicity...
Still one of my favorite performances of all time :)
❤❤❤❤❤
You nailed it!
❤❤❤❤
Merci, Philippe !

Mark Jason

He seems to have fun and I enjoyed his program very much. He is charismatic, comedic and very dramatic!
Like Stojko, he was a man of his own convictions. He loved to entertain and his fans loved him for it. Magnifique!

Kulik was an amazing jumper, but flawless technique was all there was to his performance.
@@MissSharpMouth You're mostly correct, but I do remember his short program to the Addam's Family theme.

Geez this guy had the ladies in his hands
2:05 they scream with him just smiling and bowing
2:17 they scream with him imitating swinging his sword
after that it just gets too many to count how many times they cheer for him haha
best and most memorable program that year
agators212 He was enormously popular in Japan so he absolutely had the crowd in his hands.
Incroyable Monsieur . Vraiment incroyable. Bravo
❤ and he loved entertaining his fans as much as winning!
He will be remembered forever, no matter how many sixes or tens other skaters will get with their boring quadruple jumps.
