Dylan, do you have any plans on viewing or Photographing the upcoming Comet in December..? (Comet 46P Wirtanen) Have seen where it may be a "Eye Observing Magnitude" Object..? I think its "Close Approach" is the 16th of Dec. Do you have any other info about this Object or tips/advice on Capturing it in Photo..? (Maybe do a Vid on it.??) Thanks for all the Great Advice and Tips.
Yes I'm really looking forward to catching Wirtanen again... it's already naked eye apparently! I got a shot of it just as the tail was emerging just recently -> facebook.com/bintelshop/photos/a.469212383098391/2123974867622126/?type=3&theater
Regarding 1:33 you can also import object coordinates in a program like Stellarium, connect the telescope, select object and give the command to slew the telescope to that given object. :) I'm practically only use Stellarium. Works absolutely great! :-)
What type and aperture of telescope were you using for the photo examples you showed? I was surprised that you did 1-2 minute exposures. Wouldn't that leave all the stars etc as streaks in each image? One can track the stars but any asteroid is likely to be moving in a different direction and will end up as a streak. So its surprising that the images you were blinking were nice and sharp?
Hi from Spain. I know that video is a bite old but it is never late to learn, right. I am interested in moving into astrometry and photometry matters and if it was possible, from time to time make some astrophotography, but that is not my priority. So my question is what kind of tube do you need for "hunting", making photos of asteroids ? I have an Evolution 8 with focal reducer 0.63, would it be good enough ? If not what kind of tube would it be necessary to have ? Many thanks for your suggestions. hasta luego.
I think it's good enough .. but the really keen asteroid / comet hunters go for C11, C14's and also F2 conversions of them (hyper star or RASA) which are ideal for finding the faint newcomers!
Dylan O'Donnell thanks. I saved up for a year and reached a bit and came to this setup. Maybe my mount will become a little issue due to weight 🤣. Practiced to find focus tonight. Now it's bed time. It's 5 in the morning 😫
Dylan, I have been viewing your postings for several months and enjoying their content. On the MPC site, I couldn't find a page called 'What's Up'; perhaps taking your name for the page a bit too literal. After searching through everything on that site, the page in the Observers > Other Observer Services drop down menu is called "Observing Target List", while the URL link is called "minorplanetcenter.net/whats_up/". No worries. Also liked the info on PixInsight function Blink; did not know that either. Thanks, John
Hey thanks John! I should've put the link in the video but I've added it to the description now too :) Not the most user friendly site to navigate but such an amazing resource. Glad you found it handy!
Do you have any update on the software you were gonna release to the public??? Im trying to get into chasing asteroids and need all the help I can find
hi dylan, how probable is it actually to find an asteroid in an imaging session? I scanned 16 imaging sessions with blinking and I cant find anything. Is that a 1/100, 1/1000 or even 1/1000000 probability?
It's complicated. I also went though 6 months of sessions before finding a few .. BUT ... some targets are more likely to have asteroids that others. I found a few around the rosette and the pleiades but both of these targets are closer to the ecliptic where more asteroids are likely to appear.
Link to the Minor Planet Center "What's Up" page -> www.minorplanetcenter.net/whats_up/
Dylan, wonderful work a genuine pleasure to watch & learn.
david duffy thanks David!
Link isn't working anymore, is this still a thing?
Hi Dylan, was hoping to find the page you mentioned. Has it moved?
Yay, I think I found one in my old heart and soul data 😁
That's so cool what you've done ....absolutely brilliant work :)
john mills thanks Millsey!

Love the focus and branding.
D J hey thanks !
Hey Dylan 👋 Have you released that software yet? Vesta is in opposition in a few days. Was going over you videos thinking of new projects.
How many comets or asteroids have you found or have to your credit Dylan?
good stuff Dylan..
Paul King thanks Paul!
Nice work Dylan,
Andrew Wall cheers Andrew !

Dylan How can I use Sequence Generator to take images of asteriodes. Say 5 sec frames 5minutes apart?
Did you ever release this tool?
Can I somehow submit any potential new asteroid that is found without a permanent observatory code…getting one looks complicated.
Nice Video. the webtool looks nice. were can i download it.
sjweemie thanks! My latest video has all the details of the tool :)
ah thanks. Im a beginner in astrophotagraphy.EQ5 EQMOD/Starwave 80 ED f/6 Triplet APO/Skywatcher Guidescope Evoguide 50ED/ Altair Hypercam 178C/ Orion Starshoot
That's a nice setup for a beginner!

This one is live on byronbayobservatory.com.au/neo but I haven't had the time to develop it any further since!
👍

Dylan, I don't know if you've noticed it, but on the thumbnail of this video here, the title reads "inding steroids". I thought that was funny :) :P
Haha don't do drugs. Stay in school. Something something.
If you were a Kiwi, it'd sound alright. It'd make sense :P
