Just one small critique, when talking about subtractive colors, the 3 primary colors are Red, Blue, and Yellow (not green) and together they will make black.
I'm just glad that some other people in the comments also pointed out the "colourful" way you mixed the colours at 1:47, because it means my mind isn't quite as deep in the gutter as I thought it was. Or maybe it is, I don't know.
Excellent!!!!!! This explained so much!!! Really makes me want to go mono with narrowband right from the start but I will probably still start with a DSLR and grow into the hobby. Thank you again for explaining everything so well along with visual examples. Perfect!!!!
Dylan, I must commend you on this video. Excellent presentation, editing and content. This is precisely the type of educational material us noob’s need. Astrophotography is one of the most frustrating hobbies there is but also one the most rewarding when everything comes together. Your videos contribute greatly to advance the hobby. I just hope all those new amateur astronomers don’t use up all the light and leave some for me..... :) Oh, one other thing. I hardly recognized you when you were interviewed by Trevor. I’ve never seen your hair combed! Chuckle. On a more serious note your a great asset to the astronomy community. Thanks for being there.
Thanks man .. I wish I could spend more time on this than I do but I think I get the points across. My hair changes a lot.. I think I’m too lazy to maintain a consistent look. But I think I cleaned up alright for NEAF. My mum probably approves 😆
Once again... nailed it! I’d just add another tip: when doing LRGB or HaRGB with a mono camera, since you have that rich Luminance layer, you can even use Bin2 (or twice as much binning as the L) to speed up the capture or get more color data for the same exposure time. All you have to do in processing is “double” the RGB stacked subs.
Just got a 1600mm, and I only have the narrowband filters so far. I didn’t get the wheel with 1.25 ones because I’m investing in filters I can use with larger censor cameras. Going to get the LRGB next week. Guess I’ll only be shooting nebulae this weekend.
Your videos are always entertaining and educational, I'm glad you're out there sharing your info with the rest of us out here so we're not blindly stumbling around. Question for you on the topic of Color & filters - do you do any binning with your mono RGB filtered shots, maybe 2x2, while leaving the Lum/Detail layer a 1x1? Just started getting my feet wet with my ASI1600MM pro and haven't found a clear answer/explanation to that question yet. And lastly, the Celestron AutoFocuser.... OMG, I love it! Thanks for giving us all the heads up on it - that little critter is amazing!
Hey thanks! I don’t do binning for the rgb but I do process the living Jesus out of it.. the layer can be rubbish as long as the L is good so I blur out the noise, minimum the stars etc.
Great video Dylan. Interesting that you keep showing Carina after admitting the best galaxies are in the Northern hemisphere 🤔😊😊 The grass is always greener in the neighbor's yard 😉
What an excellent idea to summarize all these configurations. Although i'm sticking to my moded DSLR for astrophotography -and I'm pretty sure ther's still a lot I can do with it- it' s good to understand better how these multiple palettes can be reached. It is always much more effective when somebody else teach you something... than your own parents :)
Hey that's funny.. I do outreach but usually to schools around Byron and sometimes groups of kids come through the observatory but the person on the beach was almost certainly not me. The last time I took a portable scope out with the public was during the lunar eclipse at the lighthouse :) There is another guy I think with a portable scope .. I think I've met him once :)
This was perfect, I needed a primer on narrowband stuff as I'm getting a modded camera soon and starting to think about doing dedicated Ha subs so this video told me everything I need to know. I'm aiming for shooting with a dedicated astro cam in false colour in about 3 years having started this may. No pressure!
Glad to find this vid, though I admit I am still slightly confused. I just got a mono cam (1600) and getting LRGB filters to practice with. I am going to have to watch this again to see whether, at F/2, I should do 4 sets of images and flats, or a luminescence set and then, what? A color set with a different, OSC camera? That's where I got confused. Ha, I will get it figured out. But the multiple sets of flats looks like the toughest issue, as they have to come from a vertical RASA with an LED panel atop the dew shield. I will for sure be getting the F/2 baaders when I can afford them, right now I suck anyway. Not completely in love with "false color", but I love the resolution.
Great explanation of color... ! Getting ready now to pickup a Coronado SolarMax III 70mm Telescope Double Stack with BF15. You all take care had have a great day...!
This is so much better then many other astronomy videos. Especially in the sense you’re up front honest (stupid human eyes) and add the humor which is what’s needed in any hobby (it’s a bit for fun anyway isn’t it, though you wouldn’t say that when looking at many fora). Thanks! Btw; I would just use APP or PI anyway instead of photoshop.
Thanks V! You’re absolutely right. It’s hard to not make the videos too centric to my gear and software workflow so I try to share the broad concepts if possible.
Hey Dylan fantastic video, very well summed up. I always had a question on something you touched on: I was wondering what RGB photography using filter wheel and r g b filters was bringing compared to say have 2 cameras, one color one, one mono, where with the first one you would get the colors, and with the second one your luminance layer, both combined in photoshop. Although might appear a bit more expensive, it seems to me like a much easier practical handling compared to using only one camera but with a filter wheel and filters? Thxs again. Keep it up.
Yeh see that’s why I don’t really use a filter wheel (much) for truecolour stuff. I do the Ha + OSC rgb trick with two cameras and the end result is going to be basically identical. Easy as :)
Hey Dylan Thanks for your channel! Too many of us (me...) get too caught up in the orthodoxy of How It Must Be Done, and end up having what should have been a fun night of shooting ruined by a misstep in our overly precise process. Good to have a reality check on how to keep the joy of this beautiful hobby intact and still come out with a spectacular result. Props! Now to completely contradict myself: with a process question i have a rasa 11 and am pretty much baffled at easily getting flats shot between filter/camera changes. What is your process, or do you even worry flats for each and just use a single channel for them? Thx!
I don't do flats at all.. instead I'm OCD about dust on the filters and camera sensor etc and make sure everything is clean so I don't have to deal with dust motes. Then all a flat is for is vignette correction really, which is simple enough to do in post with a background extraction or synthetic flat :) I think the way you are supposed to do it is with sky flats, but it all gets a bit tricky as the flat is ruined if you change the rotation at all after taking them, which you typically want to after dark.
Nice video, and well explained. I always look at really good astroimages as what Monet or Caravaggio or Bellotto would have done. They are modern interpretations of photons that are million, if not billions, of years old.
As usual...simple, short nice and funny explanation...this serious astro stuff always need the fresh and humoristic perspective that yo give..thank you Dylan¡¡¡..Can you give some tips for solar eclipse.? .we are preparing for a huge one here in Chile ..

Could I use a mono camera in conjunction with my DSLR for layering like you have? I'm still really learning the processing side. I obviously don't want to buy something that I can't use as I want.
Yeh mono is a HUGE factor.. like 3x the detail you get from colour. (See my video about why astronomers use mono cameras) ua-cam.com/video/lD0ZH2doSlk/v-deo.html

Hi there Dylan! Amazing videos, I'm trying to watch them all, learning a lot! I just found out Celestron has an official store here in Argentina, and I would love to get a 8" tube. Would you recommend a telescope or an astrograph? I'm really deep into AP, and I can get a CPD Deluxe 800 HD GOTO, Nextar 8, or maybe the 8" or 11" RASA astrograph. I have been wanting to have a small observatory all my life, and now slowly it's picking pace, couldn't be happier!!
I’ve got a modified DSLR is it even worth doing narrowband with RGB? I want to shoot some false color but I don’t know if it’s even possible with a DSLR. Which channel would you extract the HA data from? I assume the red and what about OII and SII?
I think even modified DSLRs still have a colour bayer matrix so you're only using 1/3rd to 1/4 of the pixels for narrowband. It's possible with dithering to compensate but not as good as a mono camera for narrowband.
Sorry I'm like two years late, but what about IR? I saw some people talking about using IR captured data as the luminous layer, but they also say technically that's not correct. And when is IR capture useful? All I know so far it's less affected by the atmosphere but then there's no "color" with it.
Sadly you can't put a filter wheel on a RASA..... can you? : P This is really interesting though, OSC + Ha exposure..... I have two identical refractors, and was thinking of getting dual mono cams and doing L+R and then G+B exposures, but now I'm thinking, I could get one mono and one colour cam, and just do Ha + OSC... food for thought
Not a filter wheel, but you can use a filter drawer .. check out my first light photo with the rasa 8... it’s narrowband :) Ha+OSC works really well for me .. super quick results.
Ok I don't know anything now. When shooting Jupiter, exactly how long can I go without planet rotation and how do I fit the time in to use all the filters. I have a zwo asi 120 mc and use sharpcap. It has some nice features but I generally only use what I know about. Help
Switch to firecapture.. it’s free and awesome :) you don’t want to go above 45 seconds per channel to get the full RGB set without rotation blurring. And a motorised filterwheel helps.. FC will do all 3 in succession in a single click.
@@DylanODonnell Thank you! I've heard lots about both sharpcap and firecapture so I just downloaded one lol. I'm only using a Meade ETX 125 but I'm getting better the more I image😁. I have my gain generally set to around 50 is and my exposure waaaaay low and I can only squeeze about 2000 maybe in that time. Is it my computer too?
Insane Insane it could be the speed of your HD (ssd drives are better) or USB port. But also make sure you are tightly cropped into the planet (region of interest) as this makes the FPS way higher.

Sadly you can't put a filter wheel on a RASA..... can you? : P
This is really interesting though, OSC + Ha exposure.....
Excellent!
Thank you for the tool, very useful
Oh good, that’s great!
Superb! Thank you so much!
The only I don't understand too much is how to capture tens of thousands of frames in that period of time.
@@DylanODonnell got it 😁. My computer uses a USB 2.0 and I have the 3.0 camera. I heard that won't really make a difference unless I have a large scope but I have asi cap for my phone and a USB 3.0 TGcord and the videos even are fast and smooth.
I'm going to get a faster computer. Got some cheap rca tablet with Windows 10 to image🤣🤣🤣🤣.
nice content as always
Thanks man!
If its good enough from Hubble its good enough for me.
That’s the spirit :)
excellent
Your presentations are great...
love the tool you developed, that's gonna make deciding how to present things in final images so much easier...
love the information, it really does serve as a great primer...
two notes--you've completely ruined both vivaldi and and ice-t in a now unending mishmash running through my head...
and seriously man, we're all gonna die? well yeah, but i'm trying to enjoy it while it lasts...
Hehe thanks mate! Extreme soundtracking .. def enjoy yourself while you can :)
Thanks
You might not have time to do that kind of editing etc every video but your intro is very well done imho.
Thanks! I want to recut the intro with new footage when I get a chance :)
Best of luck with that this one is going to be hard to beat! It is definitely not too long, it is very upbeat and captivating and it just works and comes together really really well.
Ps don't listen to them, it is not too loud! It makes sure we are all awake and paying attention :')
Perfect
Love the idea of combining L with a single colour shot. Even though it’s all meaningless.
Yeh man .. It’s basically the same result as doing a 4 run LRGB but in half the time :) the RgB layers can be complete rubbish as long as your L is 👌🏼
Big D
Professional.
Thanks Hammms !
LMFAO. You’re pretty freakin hilarious
It is ok we are jeli about your nebulas too. Win some lose some I guess.
Everything is meaningless and we're all going to die!
😂🤣
Insta Sub!
Great content too.
Haha thanks Woody! I think it’s about 50/50 with that line between subs and unsubs!
Still confused, thanks anyway. It make take a few reviews to catch on.
It’s pretty broad I know! I’m torn between being giving beginner or advanced explanations...

Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow
Sing a rainbow
Sing a rainbow nebula too
And now I have to administer a brutally strong herbicide to my neighbours tree
THATS THE LAST TIME THAT M%&££F%%££ing TREE GETS IN MY WAY!
Then I'm putting on Back in Black
Back in black
I hit the sack
I've been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hanging about
I've been looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high..
Oh yehhhh 🤘🏼
Hi, Dylan...speaking of color....I presume you've seen this monster of a photo. I suppose it's popped up in a number of places by now, but Phil Plait has a great article to go along with this staggering image. It's here: www.syfy.com/syfywire/amateur-astronomers-create-an-incredible-1000-hour-image-of-a-galactic-neighbor
I have seen it.. amazing right? I wonder if it would only be a 24 hour photo if they all used RASAs 😆
I love your videos as a C11HD was my wife's X-mas present and I am nothing but her sherpa who's trying to learn about her hobby. However, a capo on AC/DC? Really? If I expected anything from you, it's to learn to play the song with nothing but the middle finger extended. (Yes, it is possible).
Haha!
Putting the LOL in astrophotography.
I try :)
I am no more wise...this is hard.
I heytsh how you say heytsh
So does my wife but we've worked through it.
@@DylanODonnell there is an astronomer Dr. Becky with a great new channel, she pronounces it that way too. She joked around about people commenting on it. I watched that right before this video.
@@Drewteam88 Haha awesome, I love her stuff too!
1:48.. what are you drawing..? 😂😂😂😂😂😂...
Nothing.
@@DylanODonnell 😂😂😂😂😂😂.. excellent. Gr8 vids Dylan. Clear skies...👍
#47th like ☺👍:)
Woohoo! Thx mate
less than 2 mins in... lol.
Just a quickie
Everything is meaningless and we are all going to die ….. in colour.
Haha you betcha
What photoshop do you use tho? I've only used Registax 6, Pipp and Autostakker
Thanks for the heart but what photoshop did you use again?
