In this video I look deeper into the process of making Chinese New Year decorations, and more specifically Chinese Paper Cutting and Chinese New Year Couplets.
I first visit my mother-in-law's friend, Teacher Jiao, who has been doing paper cutting for over five years. She shows us her work and also teaches me a little bit. In the end, we leave with some beautiful pieces, among them two round red decorations to paste on our windows for CNY.
Then I'm back home, filming my husband writing calligraphy - black ink on red paper. These are couplets, and are pasted on the door frames during the celebrations. My husband also explains the meaning of them (in his own words haha).

Chinese officials on Saturday reported the highest death toll so far in a 24-hour period.
◆ The 46 new deaths in China raised the toll to 259.

I love Chinese paper cutting, I bought some small ones when I visited Beijing in 1988 and I am still having them. It will be so exciting to see how you incorporate Swedish elements into Chinese paper cutting. And please tell your husband that his calligraphy is beautiful, wish I was taught in school back then, anyway, I can tell your husband is a very artistic guy judging from the way he dress and his hair style, he is a handsome guy.

The lady is so lovely and the paper cuttings are amazing!! what an artist! It's such a shame that young people these days are not willing to learn these traditional crafts...Miriam it would be so great if you pick up this craft and integrate your own unique style into it :-)
Like she said, it is really hard to make money from it, so a lot of young people in this area work really hard, and don't have time for this. I think it's sad! But many young people also don't have the patience I think, to sit down and just cut for hours and hours. I would love to learn, I have so many ideas haha.

That lady is super talented. I have always loved Chinese papercuts. Hard to find authentic ones now. I believe many are being laser cut -- well, the ones for tourists.

And your chinese sounds so good, I'm still learning ^^ Where I am, Chinese New Year Celebrations were kind of cancelled because of the coronavirus, it was my first Chinese New Year experience but my parents in law say it was nothing compared to what usually is like. I'm looking forward to next year's! Also, even though I didn't get the full experience this year, I can already tell there are some differences from your region to mine, it was exciting to learn about the decorations there!

I could see this type of handicraft becoming trendy in the United States if there were classes or tutorials available to people. Nowadays a lot of people love intricate, detailed crafts like cross stitch or even coloring because there's no screen, and the amount of focus it requires helps them to de-stress, and honestly this looks like a really rewarding creative outlet. With that in mind, I'm surprised more young Chinese people don't do this.

I have always liked Chinese New Year paper cutting. These years I folded Chinese Zodiac for my office lil decorations.

When I saw your husband doing the calligraphy, I was like, "wow" that's not easy even if you are Chinese. Really lovely! I did some Chinese paper cutting for a brief moment to use in my pottery. It hurts your hand after awhile and I never made anything big. Those designs were so beautiful, thanks for bringing us along.

your videos can show the real sides of China, particularly the rural China. Chinese society is very different from those in the western world. These rural villages are quite backwards; villagers live in a closely knitted community. Outsiders may find them a bit intrusive. In fact, they are caring and do mean to help.
I bought a big paper cutting (8 horses running) at a Beijing street market. At that size and that intricate pattern, I really think it was a machine/laser cut since it was rather cheap.
It was supposed to be a souvenir for a friend, but I accidentally left it at Shenzhen airport lol.
Hello! All of your videos are lovely! And this lady who is the friend of your mother-in-law is so talented. It is a shame that such skill is not recognized or patronized! I think many of your viewers would love to support her by buying her works! It is an idea--please offer these somehow so she may make some money off of these wonderful paper-cuttings. I think if young people see there is a way to make a living from the traditional crafts, they would take up these skills!
We are exploring ways to collaborate with her, so hopefully that will be the case! Wouldn't be until later this year though!

I don't think etsy is available in China or in Chinese. And it's also not possible to sell others handicraft on etsy. But we have some ideas for the future to collaborate with her!
I LOVED the video. It's my favourite one. _ My favourite paper cutting that i have seen in your video is the mandala one, it's the one i can see hanging in my home the whole year round. (The big circle one that was framed and hung on the wall at the back of the room.) I love kirigami and paper craft, and i love the colour red. The mandala one is my dream one. Enjoy the discovery ! It's so precious to have a friend that can show something like that. It's a beautiful technique. I am curious of what you are going to create.... I also love these cutouts so so much, I have purchased many many small ones (especially children, flowers and animals!) I laminated them and made them into beautiful bookmarks for my children. I would love to buy more, large or small ~ does this lady sell them? Also, has your husband ever thought of selling his calligraphy? He really Is very good at it, and I would purchase it! It’s quite mesmerizing to watch him draw the calligraphy!!
You could totally sell these couplets. In America there are many online teachers who buy decorations for their "classrooms" every year. Check out the facebook groups. Same with the paper cuttings.
