The most introspective of Prokofievs piano sonatas, the fourth sonata is ridden with angst, darkness, and soul-wrenching pain. Originally written in 1908 at the end of his St. Petersberg conservatory years, he revised the first and third movements and composed the second in 1917, under the imminent threat of German invasion in World War I and the October Revolution. Stanislav Richter described the sonata as "intimately chamber in character, concealing riches which are not immediately obvious to the eye." Although it is not as easily accessible as his other works, the fourth sonata is still a fine representation of his lyrical soul.

First movement Wading through fog, snow, and pain, it narrates an internal journey of pain, tragedy, and sorrow. From the beginning, it opens with an unusual closing 5 to 1 gesture. Allow your imagination to run free with this story.
