  • University (or college for those in the states) is tough, and getting a job after your computer science or software engineering degree is even tougher! Here are my tips for how to maximise your potential as a software engineering student, how to make money, get internships and land yourself a job as a software developer.
While you're at college as a software engineering student, you fortunately have time. Getting good grades is super important, but so is your time outside of the classroom. Your degree, despite what your school will tell you, does not prepare you for real world work. That's all on you.
In order to best prepare yourself for the 'real world' and make some money in the process, here's what I'd recommend.
Start building things! Build an ios app, an android app, see if you can make a game with some friends or build a saas app. You probably won't get the chance to touch all of this at university, so getting a head start now will help you out immensely long term.
Building out your own apps will:
    - expose you to many different types of development.
    - teach you what you do and don't like when it comes to different technology stacks and methods of developing.
    - give you excellent talking points in interviews for internships and jobs.
    - makes sure you stand out from the crowd when it comes to job applications.
    - if you monetise correctly, you won't have to work down at the local supermarket for 10 dollars an hour.
Being in control of your own learning, and generating income off of the software you build is empowering. It will impress employers, land you better jobs and help you afford any luxuries you might not have been able to afford. Added to that, if you start you own little business, you can take advantage of business expenses.

Any other software developers out there - what would you do differently at College?

I'm 30 years old and just landed a career change to a junior software developer in a web team. I studied music at collage and looking back, it was the biggest waste of my time as any career path is in that field is super limited. Right now, with the opportunity I have been given in my current role in tech, I wish I had started developing in my teens. Also, love the channel - some really valuable content!

Thanks so much! Honestly I wouldn't look at that degree as a waste of time - there's a tonne of music based software companies. If music is still a passion of yours, you could make for an extremely compelling candidate. Serato is one that jumps to the top of my head.

Thanks for this video. I feel more determinant and hopeful to continue CS undergrads study. And kinda knows more about differences between high school study and uni life! Doing practical projects is so meaningful and I think the project can be related to many fields.

That awkward moment when you're watching this video after you just graduated.😅
The information though is still very helpful and valid despite the fact that I'm no longer studying. I spent my years in school working in IT Helpdesk roles so that I could make money reliably so I didn't spend enough time on personal projects. Did do a few hackathons though.
Either way I felt like I didn't have much direction, but this video provided me with a lot! Thank you very much!

...how is it that I feel CS was my perfect choice but sw development is not my path? I hate practice courses where we need to make apps and if I make one more report about agile methodologies I’m dropping out.

Yes, absolutely you can. If you have reached late is better than not reaching. A lot of people find their passion after their 30s or 40s. Just keep it up and work hard as much as you can, it will pay off. It's okay you have learned from those 3 years a lot, you've learned that you have to work hard it's never too late. I know the society has pressure on you, they want you to figure out yourself they want you to get married they want you to graduate they want you to have a job, i know it's hard sometimes to not consider their thoughts abt you, but at the end their thoughts will not do anything.
