    I had a tutor and a friend student that excelled in classes. The tutor is doing well but my friend is now deceased beaten to death as a street person on drugs. The tutor that helped me told me that the reason one goes to school is to learn to teach yourself. Hardware and software work so well together, it’s near perfect. Saying you can play games on an LG gram is awful. Try recommending something thats not backed by the manufacturer. So be the best mathematician you can be before you even start. For example, if you cannot test into Calculus I you are going to start a CS degree behind everyone else; 2) get the 17" LG gram laptop. It weighs less than two pounds which is less than a lot of other 14" laptops and you get a bigger screen!

    Hmm imo asking a proffessor and chatting with them is easier when you have offline class rather than online class. I mean privately you can just ask them by emailing them but that would take ages usually or you can contact them directly using social media platform that he or she provided. These ways are not really great for getting a better understanding since its your proffessor there will be etiquettes and you wouldn't treat them like your tutors where you ask them a lot of questions either. To ask them for a private call just to explain the material one on one is just not right ethics wise. Do you have any ideas to get around this barrier? Should i just start asking questions directly on class? or just stick with emails?(sometimes i dont ask questions because my questions are sometimes not complicated or just simple questions). What do you recommend universities should do to go around this during this pandemic?@ForrestKnight

    • @aaronjgeorge
      @aaronjgeorge 3 роки тому

      naturally, unless the university has their own portal for questions, there is no other alternative. Just send them an email or communicate as your professors have asked you to. Just document everything as is if you're worried about "ETHICS". If everything is documented as is it will be fine.

    I tried making friends last semester, and all they wanted to do is look for answers online 🙄 or copy my code when I had figured it out. They were the other 2 girls in that class.
    Anyways, this semester there wasn't any computer science classes available, and next semester there is machine learning, and I'm scared I won't be good or understand, since I haven't practiced any code or learned anything for computer science this semester. And last semester got ruined because of the virus, I only learned 2 months in class, and the rest of the semester the professor had a hard time teaching online. So we hardly learned anything.
    I tried to practice on my own this semester, but I hardly have time, since I am currently taking 6 classes. (Calculus, math support course, history, biology, communication 100 & communication 180). Any suggestions?

      @gracefulghost1312 3 роки тому

      You could always try going to reddit and getting into one of the subreddits programming buddies. I generally see it as a good resource when learning to program but it depends on what your learning. I know for me I just have the programming languages that I am interested in like C++ and Python and usually there are a lot of great post where they offer tutorials on certain topics. I also am taking a lot of classes during college so I kind of understand what your going through since I didn't practice anything computer science related (i.e coding) until I was enrolled in the class.
      You could always try to find some online tutorial like TheOdinProject or some other free resource you could use where there aren't any deadlines. Only saying that because it might help you to manage your other 6 classes. Like you would not really want to enroll in coursera courses since you would have quizzes which would be due each week. That's sort of not the goal since we have finals coming up and your classes right now will take a priority to coding. Maybe just dedicate at least 1 hour a week to coding something that you think is fun or helpful to you. Maybe making a webpage based on the classes you are taking now. In this way it could also help you with some of the classes if you have a final project/paper or something else like a presentation. Not saying this will be essential but it could provide a nice addition that would make you a bit more unique in the professor's eyes. I have no idea how you would relate coding to a Calculus or math support course though.
      Though you are learning machine learning which is something that I haven't learn so I wish I could offer more help.

    This seems more like a "How to be a successful student in tertiary education" tutorial than advice for studying computer science.
    I'm surprised no one seems to have made videos on organising information and subject matter when studying CS. How to take notes for revision while studying. How to organise articles and code snippets you want to save for the future (and how to schedule working through those finds in order to start using them.)
    And most importantly, systems for organising documentations and theoretical breakdowns of languages you've learned, hierarchically sorted by category. I understand that some information is good enough to have in your brain and know where to find it online, but surely for a bunch of subjects you must want to write out organised diagrams, and lists of code snippets you use frequently, or that have helped you solve particular issues that a language is particularly suitable for.
    Perhaps back when you made this video you were still too much in the headspace of the college treadmill to bother with spending time on most information that wasn't immediately related to classes, and so you didn't address the question of how to organise this information and schedule working through it. But since then with all your projects and advanced lessons surely you must have developed a system for organising information like that - and perhaps you also developed an ideal method for preparing flash cards to actively memorise computer science knowledge?
    If that's something you'll write or make a video about, I'd love to see it.

I will say that maths does have transferable skills that relate to computer science and programming, most notably problem solving, but you can be a great software engineer or web developer without being very good at maths

    Hey Forrest, I'm more of a casual reader when it comes to my hobbies (I still think of computer science as a hobby) Do you have any websites or subreddits you enjoy browsing for content or discussions? I'd rather read and be knowledgable than be reactionary to a problem since they can deter me from coding. cheers!

    That commercial though.... As a CS & hardware nerd my BS meter had lift off. You're not gonna do any virtualisation on that or any heavy duty graphics stuff. Do battery life promises hold up if you're not running Win10? Means no *nix terminal for a CS student? You gotta be kidding me and don't get me started on WSL2. Why would you recommend something you know to be BS targeted at students that might not know? Instant unsub, so disingenuous, someone green might actually buy into all that marketing crap. Anyone starting as a CS student get an x86 Mac for now, if you want an easy life and you're gonna throw LG Gram money anyway. If you want to save money, get an old/used decently specced laptop and install some Linux distro. Last tip for newcomers, don't fall for all the VIM/Emacs BS on campuses. Install VSC/Sublime/Atom whatever modern editor you prefer and stay focused on the work at hand instead.
    List:
    - Native *nix Machine on x86
    - Modern text editor to get you of to an easy start
    - Don't buy a windows machine for 2k that can do literally jack all heavy duty work, if you splashing buy an x86 MBP.

    I don't like this mentality. I don't want my life to be consumed by one thing. Even if it's the thing I like the most, there is a lot in life. No one wants to live a grind mentality for their whole life, some just tolerate it better.

    okay so i have a problem, and idk what i should do but if anyone sees this and can give me some advice, i'd appreciate it.
    i have a degree in computer science, but the university i went to barely taught me anything more than the basics, and though i almost graduated with honors, i still feel like CS is not for me. Forrest said that in order to succeed in CS you have to be passionate about it and not half-ass it, but unfortunately i don't find myself to feel that way. but then again, my other problem is that i have no idea what else to major in, and i feel like since i already graduated, i might as well continue with it, even though i don't really like it that much. i don't know how and never have written a complete app or website from start to finish, no idea of how git and version control work, and don't feel this "want" to look those things up and learn them, or to create projects using them, even though i know practice is the only way to learn in this field.
    so what can i do?
