2024 F1 British GP Friday analysis by Peter Windsor

- McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris delighted the home crowd by being quickest on both light fuel and heavy on Silverstone Friday. His team-mate, Oscar Piastri, underlined the pace of the orange cars, with the Red Bull-Hondas of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez a shade away - particularly on the long runs. Mercedes and Ferrari seem to be closely-matched, and there could well be starring support roles from Haas and Aston Martin. Peter Windsor in this video separates the gusts from the cross-winds by looking at the general trends of the cars on both light and heavy fuel - and the trap speeds in both guises.

Bring back the full long run times! 😁 Really enjoy them for some reason - you're the only one who covers them
i second that too🖐, they paint a clearer picture on how the cars do over the whole stint
Me too!
Agree! It’s great!
I like the detailed analysis, Peter, please bring it back! It’s always very insightful
It seems like redbull was very good operationally today. The difference between mediums and softs, explains why redbull didn’t care about the softs
Nice video Peter but I miss the detailed laps for each driver
It’s not too complicated at all as I normally pause the video multiple times to study the laps in great detail and also use them as a general reference
Please include next time as they tell a huge part of the story and helps me understand how you use and interprete it
I quite like seeing all the lap times of the long run, maybe just highlight the fastest of the run to make it standout. Love your work Peter!
Right, it should be included in live timing, but now one would have to write each lap time because there is no history.
Bring back the stint lap times lists. Found those very useful
Both Merc and red bull on full throttle way more than McLaren. Clearly both running low Pu mode
Were they running "full throttle" or "low Pu mode" it can't be both ways. I think quali showed they were sandbagging.
@@billygoat520 if your pu mode is lower, you can go flat more often because there's less power
@@burneraccount9359 I agree but that is not full throttle to me.
@@billygoat520 full throttle means that your foot is pressed to the floor. Your definition is just wrong
Kudos again Peter Thank you for your excellent analysis and you showed that last week (Austria) again you were the only one that you got it right from the beginning. Thank you for staying yourself and trusting your own judgement.
I’m sure you don’t feel any glee over having been one of the only F1 media figures to have a contrary narrative to what everyone else was saying about Austria, but it was amazing to see nearly the entire grid (including Lando) effectively take the same position you did.
Jenson Button did, too.
It was great racing last week. Sky and the rest failed to see Lando's obvious mistakes.
He was much too desperate to get past Max Verstappen.
For me, Verstappen's defence was perfectly fine. It was good proper hard racing.
The thing was it was an incident caused by max , but if u look at the record probably one of the smallest incidents ever . But somehow the Pirelli tyres said “drama”
Lets go max.... winning at silverstone in front off all the haters should be so sweet...

@@MaxMustermann-uv1qbWhat about braking?
Just fun omg
Going to happen and Jos got headbutt the Poms. Ta
I think the Mercs, Ferrari, and RB were sandbagging. Mercedes historically keep their engines turned down when they have a fast car.
Yeah the announcers knew something was up.
Why speed trap speeds were down.
Ferrari doesn't look good based on Mr. Windsor's analysis. Which is always informative.
Nope, remeber, lewis has always told the truth, the merc has no party mode....
@@Ratkwadthat’s a different thing. Party mode was a suspected engine mode for qualifying. This here is Free Practice and lots of teams up and down the paddock don’t use 100% engine power during practice to reduce wear.
Good morning more detail in the long runs was awesome and preferred

Thank you
I really love the music at the end of these videos

Always enjoy your video’s as well as your talks with Cameron. Too bad you don’t have more fuel run lap times. They give a feel for the consistency and drop off.
Cameron is a pretentious knob.
All lap times was great!!

Let’s go Lando!!
Is it too late to scrap the '26 aero changes? It is becoming more and more clear by the race that the field is coming together nicely. The difference between RB/McLaren/Merc/Ferrari isn't very much. In '26 it is likely this is all blown apart and some team finds a loophole with "creative" interpretation of the rules and ends up a good distance ahead of the field.
Typical F1 behaviour. We would never had had the '21 magic if the regulations changed as intended. Its a shame there's such drastic change so often
I agree. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Welcome to being an f1 fan my guy. As soon as you really learn to like the reg they Change them up for something unknown that most don’t want, then the feild speeds out for 2-3 seasons and by season 4-5 you have real action happening on track most weekends.
This is the whole idea of F1 lol to see who can exploit new regs the best. This round it was red bull. The first few years of the regulations are really a competition between the engineers, the last few years are a competition between the drivers
Well if there aren't regulation changes , what are the engineers and aero scientists gonna do . The cars are at the limit of development and there's not much they can add to the car .
I feel Adrian wants to design a Ferrari before he wraps up. he ´s already designed an Aston. so...
Good point ha

Thanks Peter. It seemed everyone was finding limits today.
Peter it will be interesting if you add the best times for all 3 sectors creating a best lap for each driver and then rank them accordingly. This could be done for each practice, qualifying and the race. Then one could see the potentially best ranked and raise or lower your expectations for the race.
Going to rain ☔️ for UK has Europe’s MOST miserable 😩weather

Excellent, thankyou. "Compare" for the seasoned drinkers
Thanks Peter for sharing your insights with us again. This weekend is really going to change around with rain on Sunday. Strategy and driving becoming a premium is a good possibility though with rain conditions. Who do you see as the stronger wet track drivers?
Max winning at Silverstone would do justice to all the hatred coming from that island. It’s really disgusting 🤮

is tire degradation related to the suspension , rear wing or both of them , and how to fix the issue of massive tire degradation , and why is lando norris always catching max verstappen at the end of the stint ???
Imo I feel like it’s bc most of the time max doesn’t push unless he flat out has to while lando is normally pushing to make up ground. Also bc Redbull normally run a lot fuel during race runs which leaves them faster at the beginning opposite for McLaren.

A perfect example of why the 3 practice sessions needs to be replaced with the sprint race. Had no urge to watch practice 2 at aall, no point watching 3 hours of drivers set the car up to be as good as possible, rather see the drivers go into qualifying and the race with 1 main session to set the car up.
If we’re gonna do sprints every weekend they need to open up the “filming day” or test day rules in general. Would need ALOT more parts aloted per year as well.
@F1 is not all about you as a fan or your entertainment. FP 2 is important for the Grand Prix on Sunday. True fans will watch it no matter what.
@@MarkSmith-rb5duyep agreed
@phillipbones. No disrespect intended but your post is a perfect example why F1 probably isn’t the sport for you.
F1 isn’t about the drivers it’s a constructors series where designers and engineers need practice sessions to optimise the setup of their cars for Saturday qualifying and the race on Sunday.
There are tons of other series that cater to close driving such as F2 that is supposedly a spec series but even that shows what happens sometimes when a team is unable to setup the car (Bearman and Antonelli in this years Prema being an example of this).
@sultanoftippoo3857 Been watching on and off since the 90s, mate, frankly somethings need to change and using the sprint format instead of P2 and P3 is a good way to test the drivers. So much wasted talent lost all because people are too stubborn when you mention change. Also don't need to mention all the issues around the sport, we all know what they are, I'm not like many who will just stick their head in the sand
Your original take on this aged really well coming into this weekend and the cooled off comments from both drivers and you made everyone else look like they were way too biased and dramatic in hindsight. Joleyon Palmer had the most awkward body posturing and defensive stature in his Silverstone preview. It’s like these guys had the energy and seriousness of prosecutors in a court case vs fans watching fun sporting events.
Is Alonso using the same engine as Stroll?
No he''s got his own ... 😂😂

Too much of an English bias as a neutral F1 fan. Could see the grin widening as he mentioned Bearman.

Does anyone else get the impression Max is playing with the rest a bit. He almost seems to be easing off a bit so it's a close finish. Maybe it's just close, especially towards the end of the final stints but at times he reminds me of what I used to do when playing with my younger brothers. I still wanted to win but I would ease off to be close to their level
Kinda does doesn't it.
Obviously not but understandable why a casual viewer would get that impression after the past couple years
@@Zionicle Were you always a bellend or is it something that's come on recently?
Too many brits on the grid now that Haas signed Bearman too. There are so many talented drivers from other countries which are not getting seats. Seems like a huge bias within F1, Thats another reason why I love to see ie. Max, Charles and Carlos winning.
But you’re not bothered about the Brit bias that 6 out of the 10 teams are based in the UK where the cars are designed and built mainly by British men & women including the Red Bull that has given Max every one of his wins? Yeah, thought not 😂
@@sultanoftippoo3857 Because the F1, teams involved and other special interest wont let any new teams in, like ie. Andretti. Of course they should open up the sport.
@@mrRTvids oh dear, I’m not sure you understand how F1 works. The 6 teams based in the UK are there because of the pool of engineering talent in that country.
Regarding Andretti (what that has to do with where F1 cars are designed and built baffles me) but the FIA merely administers the sport (they actually passed Andrettis compliance application).
I think the stakeholders you are looking for who blocked the Andretti bid are in fact;
1: the commercial rights holder Liberty Media/Formula One Management (American owned) and
2: the F1 teams themselves. Just focussing on the 6 teams based in the UK - McLaren is owned by a Bahrainian consortium, Mercedes is part German, part Austrian owned, Red Bull is Austrian owned, Alpine is French owned, Aston Martin is Canadian owned and Williams is American owned.
In short if you want to understand which nations actually blocked Andretti you’ll need to blame the Germans, French, Austrians, Bahrainis, Canadians and Americans.
You’ll notice no “Brit bias” in that decision. No, the simple answer as to why there are so many Brits in F1 is like Italy it’s a centre for motorsport engineering talent and a strong culture of racing in many series from karting up to Formula 1.
@@sultanoftippoo3857 You can save your lecture. I said nothing about brit bias being in the F1 monopoly decision making. Where are you getting that from?
F1 as a business has their own decisions and teams have their own decisions related to drivers.
My point being, im sure there are more opportunities for drivers to reach F1 starting in britain, for all the different factors, including history. But there are many talented drivers from other nations sitting as reserve drivers or in other categories who should be in F1.
@@mrRTvids Sorry I offended you using facts and logic but you were the one that brought Andretti into the conversation 😂
You still don’t get it do you? Many drivers from other nations come to Britain in their early years to gain experience in lower formulae after graduating from their local karting leagues (Formula Ford, etc). All those drivers whether they be British or wherever they come from (if they are good enough) get picked up by Driver Academies (Red Bull, Mercedes, Williams, Ferrari etc) and are groomed through formulae like F3 & F2.
Those drivers then hope they will get an F1 drive if they have matured sufficiently (Bearman British - Ferrari academy) and (Antonelli Italian - Mercedes academy) are the two graduates likely to have a career in F1 in 2025 and beyond.
Now who are the stakeholders who make these decisions, a bunch of anonymous biased Brits or team principals like Toto Woolf (Austrian) in a German/Austrian owned team and Fred Vasseur (French) in an Italian owned team?
I can see your frustration but there is no conspiracy going on here. You might not like the British, or that they have so much presence in F1 but it’s been like that for the past 70 years. You can either accept it and enjoy the sport for what it is or be eaten up with nationalism and xenophobia every weekend. Your choice, I really don’t care.
I am looking forward to ground effects being a thing of the past. That and thr 18" wheels. Too much liability.
We all know that Qualifying is representative of who's who as far as speed.
Let's see how it unfolds
Mr. Windsor I have a question. For 2 years now we have heard how great Adrian is and his cars are the best, yet now it seems this car is experiencing some of the same issues that Mercedes did. I know he is leaving Red Bull and i know in F1 these guys are very calculated in what they do. His decision I feel wasn't made this year so with thatbeing said I see this car as one of two things. Either he outsmarted himself and couldn't fix the inherent issues with that car design or he intentionally did this to hurt Red Bull. I'd love your opinion. Thanks
Its just moslty the anti Max media trying to come up with excuses as too why Max is winning. From all his yrs in F1 designing car , many other cars have dominated longer than any newey car has. Ferrari and mercedes to name a few
@@PauluzP Absolutely, the Newey dickriding is 100% a tactic to diminish Max's abilities.
I am truly curious as to when Adrian's stopped designing the upgrades for this car. I know he's a top notch designer but did he get it wrong or did he do it on purpose? Why do someone radical and say you could fix what someone else couldn't only to jump ship when it's not going to plan.
