Hungaroring History, Crashes and Onboard

- Before WW2 and Communism invaded East Europe, racing was a popular event in the majority of those countries, especially the ones near Central Europe.
However, politics and the following war meant the end of Grand Prix motor racing in the country for exactly fifty years.
By the 1980s, the world was still divided in two sides. In one side, the leaders of Formula 1 came up with the idea of building a circuit beyond the Iron Curtain in order to bring new fans, TV viewers, and communities into the bloodstream of the “racing circus” while on the other side, authorities were keen to promote tourism and raise the profile of the country through motor racing so talks began about hosting a Formula One race.
The Népliget circuit was initially proposed, with the idea of creating a Monaco-style street race. However, this was soon rejected in favour of a modern, purpose-built facility.
Ecclestone personally followed the planning while the building was in progress.
Construction work started on October 1, 1985 and was completed in just eight months.
In 1986, the Hungaroring played host to the inaugural World Championship Hungarian Grand Prix , an event which has been held at the circuit every year since.
The event was undoubtedly a success, even if the track was less enthusiastically received by the drivers. The tight and twisty nature of the course was compounded by a slippery track surface - a lack of general use throughout the year plus the bowl-like nature of the landscape meant dust was always a problem. Some enjoyed driving the course, others detested it; all could agree, however, that overtaking was at a premium.
The layout of the Hungaroring circuit has changed only very slightly since its opening in 1986.
The Hungarian Grand Prix in the Hungaroring has been the scene of several memorable races.
It was specifically built for F1 and in record time. It is great for spectators as they have almost a full view of the track regardless of their position on the circuit but for racers it is a place known for being a track where they really have to work hard to earn their money.
This documentary reflects all its history, all the major crashes and even an onboard with Ayrton Senna in a Lotus Turbo in 1987 in the original layout.
Enjoy!

Piquet's famous overtake on Senna has to be one of the greatest of all time.
Yes, by far!
It was such a novelty watching F1 arrive to Hungary. Interestingly, in my mind it's still a 'new race' despite becoming one of the oldest on the calendar by now.
They also do truck racing on it.
It was indeed, we were amazed in the west! Damn... I had that truck racing in my notes but, for some reason, it didn´t make it to the final script... Too much work, I guess... Thanks and cheers from Portugal!
*Great upload! Big LIKE 14👍 Ciao!*
Big thanks from Portugal!
Thank you very much for making this video! I am hungarian and I've always wanted to know more about the Hungaroring, but have found most articles about it quite dry and uninteresting. I always wantes a longer video/documentary about its history and memorable moments so thank you again! This is a tiny little country in eastern europe, its amazing we have a race at all, let alone one that has been on the calendar continuously for 36 years now! Only monza has a longer streak than that! There aren't a lot of people who are fans of the Hungaroring, but I(a biased source, I admit) find it on par with other regular race tracks and unique. (Also think this track is better than near all street tracks like: Saudi, Australia, Miami, Baku, Mexico) I live on the opposite side of the Danube to the ring and I hope I can attend the race this year. You make excellent motorsport history videos, thank you for making one of my home track.
I appreciate your very nice words mate and that was my pleasure. Your track is way better than the modern tracks, especially the city tracks that I strongly dislike. I really hope your track can provide some nice race this year and throw some surprises. We are getting tired of seeing Verstappen win with ease... Thanks again! Cheers from Portugal.
Once again excellent work! It's persons like you you that are the fabric of humanity. You're efforts need more recognition across the world. Well done.
Wow, thank you! Unfortunately the numbers are each time lower so motivation is going down the drain...
I'm a little upset with UA-cam. I subscribed to you with notifications but haven't received any till today. In any case, thank you for your excellent work. I especially enjoy the narration. Nice job!
Cheers! 😮 Please note that I am a bit pissed with YT and I haven´t posted anything for 3 months. I don´t know it it helps but YT is becoming very shitty for the past 6-8 years... But more to come. Cheers!
Great old film clips & stills as always!
Glad you like them! Cheers mate!
I think your video is more interesting than most races there!😂
Thanks for your nice words mate!
Great work ,Ourafilms !
Many thanks! Cheers from Portugal!
This track will somehow have its 40th race in 2025. Considering the tracks that have been dropped from the calendar in this time, it's extraordinary that this place still remains.
Amazing indeed.
What fun to watch, your humor, and empathy for Ukraine, make the production for me. That, and your well researched factoids. Thank you for making fascinating and entertaining F1 and Grand Prix motorsport content.
Thanks for your nice words mate. A lot of hard work in this video in very little time, when compared with other similar videos. Yesterday, I was smashed and simply fell asleep... LOL.
My country is in Top 3 when regarding safety and peace (well, it was a few years ago) so I totally feel for the Ukrainians, one of best people in Europe, to be under a stupid, totally unprovoked destructive war. Remember that some of the best Ukrainians are now dead - from musicians to doctors, from teachers to the normal random guy! Full respect for them for dying defending their country!
@@ourafilmes yes, an absolute shame that Ukraine has been so devastated simply to satisfy the unquenched greed of a few men with complete disregard for humanity. Evil. Pure evil.
If I'm not wrong, Moto GP held the first event in a communist country (Rijeka, Yugoslavia) way before F1 - in 1978. Not sure about Brno.
Maybe but I don´t follow Moto GP a lot and I certainly, during research, never saw that mentioned anywhere. But it is possible of course! Cheers!
hungaroring is twisty hard to drive slow corners but hungaroring 37 yrs in calendar best races was here 86 87 88 89 90 97
Thanks for your input. I preferred to chose wet races as they are unpredictable. Cheers from Portugal!
