It'd be interesting to know what's with the big hoses through the front door prior to the flight. But this brings back memories of the twelve years I lived in Ithaca NY. Out of Ithaca to a US Airways hub, New York LaGuardia, Philly, and Pittsburgh, I would fly back to my native Charlotte NC for special things like Christmas etc. Out of Ithaca, I flew on various regional turboprop airliners, which were twin engined. Regional airliners are known as "puddle jumpers" because of the short hops they make. But the aircraft I flew on out of Ithaca included the Beechcraft 1900 C and D models. The Jetstream 31. The Shorts 360, distinctive for it's square fuselage, and my favorite of all of those aircraft, the DeHaviland Dash-8 100. It's cabin was most like that of a mainline aircraft. Nowadays, all of the regional airlines have done away with the turboprops, and are flying regional jets, which eat up fuel. It's my understanding that turboprops are more fuel efficient than fan jets.
Flying in turboprop airliners, I love the sound that the props make over the whine of the jet engines that spin the props. In taxiing, the props make a chafe cutter sound like that of a box fan. In takeoff and inflight, the props make a low pitched drone that often vibrates the cabin. Many say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is "real driving". I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"!
I myself understand that a turboprop engine is a turbo-JET engine with a propeller attached. That's why it's called a "Turboprop". The propeller provides 90 percent of the thrust while the jet exhaust adds an additional ten percent thrust. That's why turboprops are more fuel efficient. Fan jet engines rely more on the jet exhaust for roughly 70 percent of the propulsion, while the air from fan in the front that by passes the combustion chamber adds a 30 percent thrust.
Others, when they hear the word "Turboprop" think of a turbocharged piston prop engine, that's not much different from that of a Porsche. I feel that most aircraft, including mid range mainline aircraft should be turboprop instead of fan jet. It may be a bit slower, and add maybe an extra 10 to 15 minutes between takeoff and and touchdown. But it'd be worth it to save fuel. To reduce the noise and vibration, thicker cabin insulation. Also, paint in big letters on the sides of the nausels, "PROP JET"! That would help educate the public that the turboprop engine is NOT an old fashioned piston prop engine like those of the old DC - 7 aircraft, or the World War 2 bombers. A turboprop engine starts up differently than an old piston prop. It basically starts up like an electric fan, and you can hear the whine of the jet engine when it starts to rotate and gain speed. With an old fashioned piston prop engine, the propeller rotates slowly when the starter is turning it over. Then, when it actually fires up, the prop rapidly goes into a spin, and a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust. The piston engine itself makes a putting sound like a Briggs and Stratton, that accompanies the sound of the props.

Takes me back to the late sixties and early seventies, flying on these tanks regularly during the summer tourist season from the UK

Great video. How did you convince them to give you access to the cockpit for filming?

Great stuff. Pretty sure that would be impossible nowadays.
