Wow my experience has definitely been different. When I go to Belize I get healthier because the food is so fresh. I'm not sure why you aren't able to get to the farmer's markets and get fresh food but it's definitely more fresh than it is in the States. You will not find tofu but you will find every manner of fresh fruit and vegetable to cook and eat. I will agree that Punta Gorda is definitely the boondocks.. I live near the center of the country in Cayo and it is the bread basket of the country. If you ever decide to come back look me up. I'm starting a farm.

I laughed like crazy listening to your video. I actually live right outside PG, been here 18 years now. Of course I am retired from the U.S. military, and have traveled my whole life. Listening to you, well, I see this every day. People from the U.S. usually end up broke and headed back to the U.S. in less than a year…most never make it two. No..we don’t connect up with new people..they come and go so fast, it’s a waste of time. You are right, lots of crazy people in this part of the world…but that’s what makes life here the best..WE MIGHT BE CRAZY, BUT AMERICANS ARE TOTAL NUT CASES! Yes..I am an American. Entitled people do not stand a chance. You want your SPECIAL FOOD…while people here are just happy to HAVE FOOD. You saw the schools, the hospital, the cost of gas. It’s a hard place to be. If you want something done right here like your cabinets..you have to do it yourself. You have been trained to call the plumber, the electrician, etc. You come here, better know how to wire a house, fix electrical problems, repair and install your own plumbing. Why? Most people don’t have power or running water. You wasted a lot of time bitching about cabinets you could have just gone to any of five hardware stores in PG, purchased a few screws and fixed the problem yourself. The people who can adapt, overcome, and take care of themselves do fine. It’s the people who depend on others to get there hands dirty that go home. Truthfully, the moment I saw you…and I did see you in PG, I figured you were just visiting…one look told me you would never make it in PG. Don’t feel bad…you could not pay me to live in PG. Don’t feel bad, you have 5 kids, this is no place for them. They need better educations, and a safer environment. At least you tried, and you were smart enough to leave. I see so many expats who should have left long before they did. They go home broke and usually have drank themselves to death. Good luck on you next adventure, and please keep telling Americans to stay away from Belize….I came here to get away from them. Raven

I think you should stay home and go on vacations because you were ill prepared it would have been a miracle for it to work out. How could you move an entire family somewhere you had never been??? Travel first than decide where you want to go back to live. Research is you best friend. Some parts are more remote than others. I wish your family luck in finding a new home.

We are on Ambergris Caye. We came to Belize in 2020 to purchase a vacation rental property. We planned to go back and forth from our home country and the island and "manage" our project. We found that you can trust NO ONE in Belize...including the expats. Everyone has an angle or wants a hand out...the lack of skilled professionals is astounding! To protect our investment we HAVE to stay until we sell, period. In our experience the cons of Belize living completely out weighs the benefits. Your video is completely truthful and NOT exaggerated...the expense of EVERYTHING, the lack of skill (progressiveness), the corruption, the unnecessary bureaucracy...it's a very tough country to move to and to navigate and do business in. I DO believe it is a fascinating and exotic country to visit and worth the expense to do so at least once.

Sorry you had bad experiences in Belize. Your note about trust no one is false, you just need to do your homework and be willing to pay a fair price for service...
As far as lack of skilled people is true to an extent but not entirely. Same as before, do your homework.
This is just blanket covering an entire nation because of a few bad people.
There are LOTS of honest and skilled people in Belize.
I do agree on the corruption aspect, it mainly stems from Govt practices, trickle down corruption, that being said, there are honest people, you just need to do your homework and pay fair wages.
Just like every other country in the world.

I was born and raised in Michigan, and I've been in Punta Gorda for almost six years now. I'm not vegan. I'm more keto than anything, but a person can be vegan here just by going to the market because there is such a selection of different fruits and vegetables. There is a store here in PG call Quality Market and it has air conditioning in it. I can't call this place third world because each year Punta Gorda is changing and coming out of third world status. When I first arrived here, it did not take long to get internet about one to three days. The Internet was coming out of Saint Charles Inn around that time. And around that time, there were beautiful friendly people who helped us get started here. Yes, I ran into some people who thought we were rich, but I had to let them know that a lot of people from the USA are not rich. It's like some kind of stereotype for all Americans here, but other than that, living here is wonderful because you are living in a tropical paradise.
There is so much more to Punta Gorda, one has to be willing to live in a place that is below what one is use to in the states. I use natural ingredients to fight bugs here and those bugs don't like me because I tell them they are trespassing in my turf, and I battle them and I always win!

It's so sad you guys went through this 😅, and yes you picked the most remote place to settle, even locals don't like going there. If this info helps anyone out there, what's an ideal option for D. Nomads who are not sure yet if they want residency is Corozal, as it's closer to the Mexican border, hence before the 30 days are up, you plan a trip with family and friends go over the Mexican side, you Still pay an exit tax, but that's usually "negotiable" far less than the $100usd pp. Once in mexico stock up on groceries as they have Walmart, sams club etc.... then come back and reset your time here. A trip to the border and closest city is about 40 minutes. Although I must say this Corozal is also a small town, better than punta gorda but ideal places to live that have better services are: san pedro, orange walk, belize city, belmopan city, San Ignacio. Maybe this info helps someone else and of course do your own research 🙏 information changes all the time. Also the trick with the border many people do this in mexico as well they live in mexico and come to belize for a weekend just to reset thier time and go back to avoid taxes in mexico. 🍻

(from my experience, and in my opinion) If you go into another country thinking of your country and how things are there.. you will definitely be disappointed. In most Caribbean countries you'll find that there are limited resources and the skillset is different, but their education system far surpasses ours... so where we excel, they lack and visa versa in some areas. I lived in Corozal and I thoroughly enjoyed everyday... Wish I was there right now... But everyone has their standards and i respect that....

Oh wow, I’m sorry your family’s experience wasn’t the best. I visited several places in Belize in 1 trip before picking a spot. I chose Belmopan. It’s a little bit more quiet but it doesn’t flood, is super safe, has parks, basketball courts, swimming pools, fire station, all business is conducted here in the capital, and public transportation is cheap and constant. I feel like you were getting ripped off with the taxis. A 1 way anywhere in town should be about 2.50usd to 3.00usd. There’s also in town buses that cost about 1.00. As soon as you talk here and they hear that accent the price does go up if you don’t know the real price. Fortunately for me as soon as I landed I met great locals who told me the real prices. I also learned that Belizeans aren’t afraid to argue over prices with eachother and so I do the same lol. Belmopan doesn’t have such a bad bug problem but we also wear tea tree, peppermint, and other bug repellents when rainy season comes. Because I haven’t started a business and travel back n forth to the states I do pay the $100 a month for my children. However, the rent, food, transportation, healthcare, utilities, insurance is so low I think it’s still reasonable until I do. One thing about Belize is there’s a Belizean price and everyone else price. Once you know the real prices for things then you would’ve seen how cheap Belize is. Cars are also cheap to buy here. I’m not a vegetarian so I understand your last point. I believe Belmopan has vegetarian options as I’ve seen them. There’s a lot of Rastas in the Cayo district so Belmopan and San Ignacio would’ve had more options for food. Good luck in your new journey!

I don't know who this person is that was advising you guys but you guys allowed this person to lead you down the wrong path. It's important to do your research before up and moving. My family is from Belize but I live in the US my husband is from Nigeria. And when I open my mouth in Nigeria they try to overcharge me as well. It's something that just happens around the world when they know you're not from that country they will try to overcharge you. You just have to stand your ground and know how to negotiate, but when people try to overcharge me I won't purchase anything from them I'll go somewhere else. If you allow someone to get over on you no matter what part of the world you're in they're going to. I do eat a lot of vegan food and there is plenty of other options for you besides rice and beans in Belize. A lot of the fruits and vegetables are not sent into Belize. There are actually a lot of farms in Belize that grow crop my family actually has a farm and grow mangoes, pineapples and avocados.
When you come to Belize depending on what type of tourist visa you choose to fill out you get a 6 month Visa after that every 30 days you pay $50USD which is 100 Belizean dollars per person. Once you're in Belize for 50 weeks consecutively then you can apply for permanent residence. So I don't know if you guys were going down there to the office and doing your visa for yourself or if you were allowing someone else to do it for you but they were definitely overcharging you by $50 per person. If you go on the website to look and see how much it cost it actually tells you the price. Sometimes you have to do your own research and not just go off of what people tell you.
I hope you have better luck and better experiences in your next location stay blessed 💓

The cupboard issue is not a Belizean thing, its a lazy thing. We have had workmen do a similar shoddy workmanship in the UK and they getting paid big money. Even the simple thing of painting, but they will paint the whole screws and not using paint tape. Its hard work trying to explain to people how poor workmanship can just cause further delays.

I'm not vegan but to eat healthy in Belize you gotta do a lot of work, travel on bus, pay more than what you should, make everything from scratch and it takes some time to learn it all. 😂😂😂😂😂 I love Belize but you got this on bullseye. Sorry to hear about your experience, but you were traveling to a poor third world country and should have done more due diligence. The title of your video should be "Five questions to ask about Belize before traveling"
    1. What is the cost of visa to enter country and to how much to extend?
    2. How is the internet service? Is it reliable?
    3. Are there any Walmarts, Home Depot, Starbucks, etc.
    4. What are the rental prices of homes?
    5. What types of grocery stores and markets are there.. Do they carry the food I'm interested in eating.
If those things are important to you, it should have been brought up with the people who invited you.
Maybe If you found out that the cost to renew a visa for 7 people would be so high, you might have decided not to even take the trip.
I think you and frankly all of us on this chat should do better research before undertaking a trip like this, particularly to a poor country.
Belize is not for everyone. You have to know what you want and how you plan to live.
Sometimes we have misplaced expectations based on our experiences and then to be shocked when things don't match up.
All the best in your future travels.

When it comes to traveling some things you don’t know until you get your feet on the ground. You can research, research research but there are some countries that are in the developing stages and there’s not alot of info available online or the info online may not be up to date. and sometimes the info you do get from a “reliable” source on the ground may be misrepresented based upon how the person that’s giving you the info wants to be perceived by you. There are many factors to consider. Thank you so much for your comment! 😊

@@BlackHippieCouple sorry for your experience here, the person advising you wasnt doing a good job. The reason why he/ she probably pick PG was due to the low cost of living and laid back vybe. The rent market alone you can get a 3 bedroom house with yard to rent probably 500bz a month or buy it probably somewhere around 20k 500bz would only get you a room in Belize city or a small piece of land some where outside of the city. Economically speaking PG is the last place you would go to build a business the pollution is small and mostly everyone leaves unless they are in a government office or some private business that makes money. I would told you guys to decide in pg if you were like a elderly couple retired and not looking to really invest and build but you jst looking for a place to finish your older years... but for you guys I would have told you to to try Belmopan, Belize city, placencia or the cayes.

@@BlackHippieCouple I moved to Mexico in 2000, thinking to retire early. Lived in Ajijic (on Lake Chapala near Guadalajara) for a year and came back to the states. Honestly, it was very much like how you described your Belize experience. There were good things, for sure, and even though that town is a tourist destination, I couldn't get a phone line, because they didn't have any spare phone numbers - and they don't just add area codes. Was also trying to have an internet based business on moving there, and couldn't get internet - because I couldn't get a phone for months. When I got one - was because I met someone who knew someone at the phone company and voila! instantly a phone number was available.
Also, my landlord had wired his house from my electrical box, so I was also paying his electricity bill - until I finally complained to the electric company that I think my bills are too high and they finally sent someone out - many weeks later - and discovered my landlord's wiring LOL. Just on and on. Plus, the language barrier was much harder than people realize. For one thing, everything is in Spanish - including everything in the Walmart stores and Costco stores. So, your shampoo bottles, all labels, and hardly anyone spoke English, although videos will tell you they do - they don't. Newspapers don't cover crimes. Met several expats who had been mugged and an elderly expat couple were killed in a home invasion when I was there. Never hit the papers.
I can speak some Spanish, but it really wasn't sufficient. And, the expat communities are really small groups of people, so there can be a lot of drama. Like living in a very, very, very small town full of people with nothing better to do than drink and gossip and cheat on each other LOL.
Of course, there were many wonderful things, too, but just wanted to let you know that Mexico isn't much different, and there is more crime. There are good private schools, but if you care, they're probably going to be Catholic.
      FWIW.

With that in mind, you did decide to move to a remote part of Belize (if looking at it from an American pair of eyes). The Southern part of Belize is mostly Garifuna culture which is more African starchy foods.
I would suggest trying San Ignacio or somewhere close to there as there are a lot more option and the markets are more abundant with fresh vegetables and fruits. So sorry you you were steered wrong on where to land.

      - Internet is not too good compared to US but in the more populated area it's waay better. Keep in mind your location in Belize, remote.
      - The construction you experienced is not indicative of all workers, again sorry for the bad experience there. But like all places, you have to shop around to get good labor, check those references and ask to see past work. Most people are their own handy-person in Belize so what you experienced was probably the owner doing it just good enough.
      - Getting around is expensive, that is why people walk all over for the most part. Most Belizeans don't ride unless they are going very far.

I HOPE that it was just a case of miscommunication with the person that advised y'all, because after having watched your recent videos and getting to know what you guys are about then the small town life of Punta Gorda is definitely not for you guys. Seeing how the internet is a major part of how you guys make your income then, yeah, I am sorry you had that terrible experience of waiting 21 business days for the internet to be connected. However, as you guys said, the instant you speak with an American accent, then there are people here, both local and expats, who will try to take advantage of the situation. I think that the person who was supposed to connect y'all Internet was waiting for y'all to 'grease the wheels', but of course this is conjecture and I may be wrong. As for your food experience, in Belize city there is Mama Chen which is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant (not sure which exactly) and a health food store that sells keto, gluten free, etc... Hey I really appreciate this videos. I'm big on integrity and strait forwardness and the point about people smiling in your face while financial taking advantage would destroy me. I don't require a discount just "fairness" especially if you are trying to raise a family. I guess "survival of the fittest (with little for a moral compass) is what the united states has taught everyone else so .....

Punta Gorda is Belize Siberia. Start urban and then go semi rural, then full rural. For #4 why do you think people are leaving the whole Caribbean. I will agree with you on the integrity part in construction and labour. The immigration fees are readly available on the website.

Awesome just wanted to really let you know that Belize is a net exporter of food. That means in the grand scheme of things they sell more food than they receive from other countries. They sell a lot of beef and produce to Mexico and Guatemala.

    • @BlackHippieCouple
      @BlackHippieCouple  2 роки тому +1

Everywhere we’ve been, the Mennonite’s were in control of all the produce and the locals would sell it for them and the Asians were in control of most of the stores. We learned this by going to so many produce stands and noticing how all the produce was exactly the same so we began to ask where it was coming from and they told us. We haven’t seen any major manufacturing plants at all. Being that belize gets most of its income via tourism, I don’t see how it can, at the same time, be a major food exporter of meat and produce but what do I know. Matter of fact, a local explained to us that what the Mennonite’s don’t produce is actually imported. That’s why companies like Belizean Queen is such a necessity.
