In this video, I play a blitz game against twitch subscriber Fooldan (2228) on lichess.org. The opening began as the Stafford Gambit, but rather than accepting the free pawn, my opponent played 4.Nc3?!?!?! transposing into a Halloween Gambit. I then played 4.Bc5?!?!!? insisting on the Stafford Gambit. After 5.Nf3?!?! we had some weird opening where I was down a pawn, but had some compensation. I will abstain from spoiling the finish to the game in this description, so watch the whole video to be dazzled!

The ending of this game is today's Puzzle of the Day on lichess! I knew I recognized it from somewhere, then clicked through to the actual game and saw "IM EricRosen" and remembered this video.

Even though he lost the match that mate was amazing, how often do you see a knight promotion forced mate.
It's quite rare if you ask me. As far as I'm concerned, I never came across such a tactic. We should ask Agadmator if he knows any previous matches where there was a Knight promotion which led to a forced mate

@@Freakinawesome333 most people have their moments, but because we are all too absorbed in the moment and too overwhelmed by the position, it's difficult to think straight
@@syedthefunnyguy7570 Yeah, I’m not beating myself up over it, it was a very difficult move to spot and it was completely winning anyway. It would have been a really nice way to finish the job and put the cherry on top of a great game, but I can’t be too disappointed that I missed it.

9:46 he already realized the mate...I didn't even see it until the checkmate actually happened...I thought it was just some petty checks that AI used to do in order to delay checkmate...wow...that was actually insane...Fooldan is no fool...

@@MichaelCheng628 The only way was king to d7 instead of promoting h-pawn, and next black move either Ke8/Kxe8/Kxe7 was winning for black, since white couldn't stop h-pawn from promoting without losing rook

Another good move would be rook e4 before promoting to queen! Controls White's promotion, sacrifices rook if takes but promotes to queen with a check on white king! But it's tough find that move in blitz with 6 seconds left. GG

Thanks for posting this game even though you lost-beautiful game and ending :) I wonder what made you not play RxR at 8:17 -it's easily winning with an easy "outside passed pawn" themed position,you obviously considered it
I know this was a year ago but if rook took white would get both the pawns, Rxf6, exf6+, Kf7, Kxh4 then Eric has to take the f pawn at some point and white can take the other h pawn, however Eric might be able to get his king to the other side before white can
@@G1ng3rBreadMan Yes, therefore the "outside passed pawn theme". It's easy to see that white is totally lost because of kings positioning after those captures..
@@yoniker83 yeah but he was low on time might not have calculated that far ahead, he had been too focused on pushing those passed pawns
@@G1ng3rBreadMan Yes low on time is the excuse but it's easy to see even for a 2100 patzer like me, it's well known and easy to see the corresponding positioning of the kings after capturing the pawns.

If I got mated by knight promotion I wouldn't even be mad. I was rooting for Eric here but damn did I like that checkmate and wouldn't change how the game went one bit
11:51 given the position at this time, you can actually play Re5 is what it looks like. Because if the pawn promotes, you take. If kxe5, you play h1=Q+. If Rxh5 (Rh6+, Kxe7 looks good, I think), then Re5+, Kg4 or Kg6 (Kf6, Rxh6, e8=Q, h1=Q, worse case it should be a draw, best case you can hide your king behind the queen and rook and check the mess out of him for a likely win), Rxh5, Kxh5 (e8=Q leads to a similar line we already explored, with h1=Q to follow), and h1=Q+. Edit: Just checked, I hate to say it but my line draws with Re4, Rxh5, Re5+, Kf6, Rxh5, E8=Q, H1=Q, Qd8+ and Qc8+ to follow as a perpetual.
Why would you play Re4 and go for a draw when Kd7 is winning? I contend that if you had understood e8=N+ was a threat - which is the only reason to play anything other than h1=Q - then you would find Kd7, preventing the promotion, almost immediately. In my opinion Re4 is much harder to find than Kd7.
Edit: I do like your line, by the way. Engine says it's the only other move that doesn't lose. But it is definitely drawn.
@@iMarc89 Oh, no. I wasn't trying to suggest that he should play for a draw in a winning position. I posted the analysis without seeing the perpetual. Kind of got lazy in my deep thinking and thought it looked like the king could do a dad bod shuffle out to the queenside to get out of the checks or something to that degree. When I checked it against the computer a few minutes later, I found out that my line was drawn. And honestly I didn't see underpromoting for the win until Eric's opponent played the underpromotion. So my line came way after the fact when I was analyzing the game for other potential moves, where I then found Re4.

At 9:40 couldn't Eric have played Rf4+ to pull the king away from mating position forcefully, giving him enough time to promote h2 pawn ?? Am drunk and cba to calculate so apologies to everyone if this is a bs idea lol
promoting a pawn to a knight is really a 200 IQ strat, because usually you want the queen, but it isn't always the solution
also i wonder if there are situations when you should turn your pawn into a bishop or rook
