Notice the changes in body language, in the beginning his physical expressions reminded me of a home made dinner, kind like you can’t believe how good it is how warm it is, head shaking slowly in disbelief. Towards the classical structures his head elevated with every note suggesting what people might perceive as snobbiness, but I interpreted as a classic, structured, calculated state of evolution. To think highly of yourself. Or to think highly of. When he introduced them as a pair it almost looked like natural gestures. Now when he started the dark tones the body turns in as if it is in pain, an almost villain like gesture of deception. It’s 4 am and I’m over analyzing body language just wanted to share. It is really beautiful to see art flow expressed through body language :)
What a gift! Simple speech, no unnecessary grandiloquence required, and yet immense gravitas. This is the way comparative scholarship arrives at something universal, and in a way - human. Edit - I just reread this and realised I waffled on a bit 😂.
He calls the Goldberg variations a solar system, I always feet that I experience Eternity when I listen to them. I almost have to be careful when I listen, as it feels I could dissolve into a different realm.
Rubin is kind of like Lao Tsu. He presents himself as a mere nobody - he has no pretenses of knowing music theory or music history or knowing almost anything. But he has a sincerity and authenticity that hints at him being way more apt than he presents himself.
Rick, you MUST talk him into recording something (the Folk Songs, the French pianists....hell, anything) in the intimate way this was done on your deck. I realize there were compromises, but the close up sound without the typical large hall that DG tends to use on everything (nice as those halls are) distracts from the intimacy. And his playing is so conversational - not one lonely man at a piano in an empty hall, but one human singing to each of us individually.
Yo tbh I play this level of stuff in my spare time. And this guy is moving back and forth as if he is on ecstasy. Nah man, this performative bullshit is so 2010. Its beautiful, sure, but why the pomp and circumstance
Spectacular.
Couldn’t agree more! This is a beautiful investigation of the soul. So glad to see your interest in art is as varied and deep as your science.
You’re Spectacular Andrew
Didn’t expect to see you here
Hey Mr Huber... thanks for your insights into the human experience, also! ❤🙏🏼
I love the way Rick is head banging to the beauty of Bach
Alternarive title: Víkingur Ólafsson meets Brahms
I am happy you are bringing classical music to the forefront with one of my favorite pianists in the modern era!
The quality of the conversation recording makes it even more enjoyable to listen. It feels like being in the garden with them.

The tone of that piano is world class
well his touch is crazy sensitive, but yes that piano also sounds out of this world!
Vikingur is so gentle with hitting the keys and streching and narrowing time its amazing.
Vikingur is spectacular by the way, I’m listening to this over and over again
Two of my absolute favourite musical geniuses: playing and enjoying Bach, Rameau, Debussy….Incredible!

Thank you Rick for opening up and sharing all that you’ve been doing!
Ólafsson is exceptional when it comes to make you feel what he is playing ..
What a wonderful surprise to find my favorite pianist on your show. Many thanks to both of you🙏
I love the way you've experimented with the format. These visuals are simple yet creative and captivating.
"Middle-aged guys discovering Bach in a garden" might be my new favourite UA-cam genre.
[Now I only need to find a second video like this...]
He calls the Goldberg variations a solar system, I always feet that I experience Eternity when I listen to them. I almost have to be careful when I listen, as it feels I could dissolve into a different realm.
this was awesome
It touches my soul so unspeakably warmly.
Thank you for that. Thank you.❤
I love how he refers to bars of notes as thoughts. Beautiful.
He has a very unique perspective and voice. Thank you for sharing
Bach is a singular genius in music, in humanity in general
A really good pianist doesn´t need many notes to convince, as you can see here. Thats a very good format for classical music.
This is beautiful, love the arrangement.
I’m so happy right now🌊
An Icelandic folk song is kind of perfect today 🎄🕎🪩🎶

Beautiful feast for the ears
Amazing! ❤🎉

You should listen to from afar. He plays on an upright piano on the b side; much more intimate
Damn, I need to explore Rameau!
He plays the sad song quietly as to not make the birds depressed
crazy how there's no background noise bleeding into the mics even with eq
Icelandic tonal fusion of the young and old...

what was the last piece he played, French school, Philip? it was incredible.
ah, Phillip Glass, Glassworks, Opening. oh so good.
he meant “our friend Philipp is kind of coming from this ethereal french school…”
I was Philip Glass the opening of Glassworks
A decent of Viking and a Viking figure.
Rick has only 85k subscribers on this channel is the crime of the century

18:45 what song is he starting to play there by Debussy?

Wanted to listen longer but my sleeping cat didn’t seem to enjoy it
Who is the dude looking like Santa Claus /Karl Marx asking him the questions?
Putting Steinway piano OUTSIDE (however perfect the weather may be) is a felony! Just stop.
Yo tbh I play this level of stuff in my spare time. And this guy is moving back and forth as if he is on ecstasy. Nah man, this performative bullshit is so 2010. Its beautiful, sure, but why the pomp and circumstance
He is literally considered one of the best pianists of all time but ok.
@lillipig nah i dont see it. I literally do this everyday to the same degree.
I totally agree
You have the same repertoire? Make some money out of it then lol
