- As Roy Keane is linked with a return to international football as Ireland's assistant manager BBC Sport recalls how his countries World Cup 2002 preparations were rocked by Keane's infamous bust-up with team manager Mick McCarthy.
Keane flew home before the tournament kicked off in Japan, and the Republic went on to qualify for the last 16 where they lost to Spain on penalties.

Terrific upload. Many thanks for sharing.
Irony is, it wound up being the ROI's last World Cup knockout appearance and indeed last World Cup appearance at time of writing, only going out to Spain on penalties.
It was a ridiculous decision to go home and not play in a World Cup and he’s since admitted it was a mistake.
Roy was sent home.
Mick McCarthy: “I sent him home”..
@@Div4Dante He was set up. Accused of pulling a sickie on the away leg of the playoff v Iran. Scurrilous accusation in front of the whole team. Was Roy to say nothing? Especially after the joke of the conditions in Saipan, wrecked pitch and no gear or footballs? Obviously Roy grew to expect a level of professionalism in the game from his time at United. But no, this manager dishing out the worst of shit you could level at a professional player playing for his country, at an already-tense juncture? Idiot..
Poor McCarthy, his skin was that thin that he couldn’t take a bit of abuse? Refused to renege on sending him home too?
Give me a break..
Roy should have just waited till he saw the permanent base they were flying out to they were only staying there for a few days and it was really meant for the players to relax for a few days always makes me wonder what could have been on that Sunday when we played Spain
@@James-b7p2kIt would have been his greatest WC moment…
I remember watching this on RTE eamon dunphy was right, I said that we would NEVER EVER recover from this and that we would probably never ever be in the world cup again and here we are 22 years on and haven't been in a major tournament since
Crazy that this even happened.
It was heart breaking at the time ciara 2002

I think the whole saga created his legend.
There Is Only 1 Roy Keane,
There was only 1 Keane for Ireland and it was never Roy
His Christian name is Roy suck itt upp🤪👍🏼
Sadly the problems for Roy Keane were probably more important than soccer,he is still a hero really
Hes right there are more important things to be worried about
Not at that time there wasn't
@@jeffd3473 I get you dude I appreciate your opinion
@@seeds4life999 Triggs wasn't going to walk himself
He came, he saw, he went home 😀
QUIT? He was SENT HOME !!!
Shouting abuse at your manager for 10 minutes is quitting because you know that you have to go for that
Up Roy Keane
He said he regrets it a lot now and he feels bad that he let especially his family down
To be fair, imagine coming from Fergie as a manager, who Keane would've looked up to, as well as the perfect preparation in terms of training facilities at Manchester United,, then having Mick the biggest airhead manager in football. I know it was disgraceful behaviour from Keane, but also unacceptable for Republic of Ireland management to accept such pathetic facilities.
Mick McCarthy the biggest airhead in football? Give your head a wobble.
Saipan could have been better, but Keane's temperament was his biggest enemy. And people forget that in Japan the facilities were world-class and training was sharp and intense with the boys having acclimatised.
He took ireland to 13 in the rankings and got to the last 16 in the 2002 world cup. His reign was very successful. Maybe if Keane stayed in 2002 they could have gone further but im sick of the excuses made for him.
Mick McCarthy one of the biggest bellends in football
Since that "airhead" left Ireland they haven't qualified for a World Cup since
Keane will never be forgiven
Bookworm 4 LOL the real Irish know the craic with the FAI. Wipe your mouth, there's shit around it
sorry what was the GK coachs name.....
Mick the thick
All fergie...one conversation to advise keane to stay would have solved everything, but he instead saw the benefit of him not playing for his man u empire and chartered a jet..... Easy see the view he had on Ireland.....imagine if it was England?
Think you’re confusing Fergie and Keane’s autobiographies…
Fergie was the one who convinced Roy to stay initially when he wanted to go home. McCarthy sent Keane home after attacking him in front of his teammates and accusing him of feigning injury for different matches which Roy didn't accept and he rightly gave it back to him. Get your facts right
Keane was right
Was he fuck
How?
Robbie Keane was right
Keane turned his back on his country
It's not like Ireland makes the worl cup very often.. so just stay... suck it up... and play for your country... a stain in an otherwise brilliant carrer really
Ditching your country because you wasn't getting gold star treatment, every other Irish player got on with it and did Ireland proud. I don't think he was getting paid enough to be there that was the problem he had. His loss, not much of a story to tell his grandkids.
Such a clueless ignorant comment. You don’t have a clue what happened or why he went home.
@@GoYourOwnWay86 I'm sure you think he went for the ball when he tackled Haaland. The man can do no wrong...
@Shane Gallagher He walked out that's the fact.
It wasn't about the training facilities you dilt.
@@jc238 he's a prick
Could have won the world cup if only Mick had gone straight to Japan and prepared professionally
That's the height of Dunphy's Delusion
Hahaha please
Republic of Ireland 4-0 Brazil
haha no lol
Lol
He put up with the mediocre Irish set up for so long and just had enough. Can't blame him. Going from Man Utd to Ireland must have been a massive drop.
To be fair Ireland were a very good side back then, it's not like he was playing in this current side that loses to teams like Luxembourg and Armenia
He wasn't even the best Keane in the Ireland squad 😂
KEANO KEANO KEANO
Look what Ireland did without him serious tho ok they should of beat Spain FAcT they played unbelievable in 02 Roy Keane crying over water balls been late serious he tryed to devide a nation small nation at that but as I say no one player is bigger than anything in football just look at MESSI new 55 million per season PSG
Ah stop. Ireland wouldn't beat Portugal on the best day with a fit Ronaldo.
@@alexd9817 what you on about Portugal??? Why them I never said anything about them I do agree Portugal would eat Ireland I
@@gu8831 God knows. I was drunk as fuck sorry
@@alexd9817 😂😂😂😂😂 sound my man
When player is greator than the team, funs gussed him bcoz he played for ManU,, only thing he was good at breaking legs n violence. He is complaining about training areas,, does he want them filled with rosses.

Yeh you clueless muppet.
What sort of childish gibberish is that? A six years old kid could write better than that.

Why Ireland had an Englishman as manager is beyond me
He played for Ireland too... What about Jack Charlton?
You mean McCarthy? He is brit of irish origin. Charlton was real english
I never understand why this guy is considere a great a player!?
Only tackle and coward tackle like to Haaland. When he is confront like Shearer and Niall Quinn he hide on Beckham arms 😅😅😅
And I fuckin mean that
He had a strong, dominant presence in midfield and incredible energy but he wasn't very skillful and his range of passing wasn't great. He did the simple things well and inspired players around him.
I think Roy was trying to quit drinking and he was not himself.
@@lindah925he hasn’t drank since he was 25…
