100 Years of Beauty - Poland

  • [POLSKIE TŁUMACZENIE PONIŻEJ] I’ve been waiting for someone to do it, but since no one volunteered, I shot it myself - here’s a video in the style of “100 Years of Beauty In…” - this time, a Polish edition. watching other videos like this, I felt like the Polish one would be different, because of our messy and difficult history. we never really had a chance to be very fashionable until the last three decades - with no access to modern fashion or make up brands, practically no fashion industry of our own, and lack of money to afford the fancy clothes, which were rarely even available. still, even amongst huge political conflicts and changes, women would style their hair, make their own clothes, and put a lot of effort into looking stylish.
I left the 2010s „blank”, because it’s a decade that still hasn’t closed, and it’s fresh enough for all of us Polish women to have different experiences and memories surrounding it. also, it’s up to us what it’s going to be remembered for anyway!
making this video was incredibly hard for me. not only because I had to transform myself 11 times, and not only because it was very emotional, but because it’s just so difficult to be “objective”, especially when talking about a period of history that is this broad. that’s why I’d like to apologize to anyone that feels the video misrepresents what actually happened, or focuses on things that are not considered historically important. I was doing my best to find one event or historical fact that affected women in each decade (and it so happens that a lot of these revolve around Polish political systems). my choices weren’t based on political sympathies, but rather on what I thought could be widely considered a thing that affected large numbers - but not always all - of women in Poland in the given era. for example, I am aware not everyone was imprisoned in the 1950s, or actively fought the government in the 1970s and the 1980s, and most of the people led quite ordinary lives. it’s also hard to portray a single look for one decade, especially after 1960s, where different people chose different styles and you could be equally fashionable sporting a punk leather jacket as you would be wearing a classy padded jacket and an elegant hat. I hope you understand that!
DISCLAIMER: I myself am not Jewish and obviously am far from understanding even a glimpse of what the Jews have been through and the trauma their ancestors are dealing with to this day. I was wearing the band as a character I chose to portray.
all looks are based on Polish photos and videos from the eras.
wszystkie stroje inspirowane były oryginalnymi polskimi fotografiami i filmami dokumentalnymi.

When I visited Poland I was shocked about how much dark history they have there. They don’t hide away from it. There are buildings that the Nazis built, places the communists ruled from, centuries of oppression. And between that? Beautiful folklore, traditions and respect for eachother.

@Presad Macaronski weeeell we did kind of mess Lithuania up and force it into a union and forcefully converted it into Catholicism. Not to mention at the end of said union Lithuania literally ceased to exist and stayed that way up until 1918, a whopping four centuries. It also proclaimed independence on a very laughably small area compared to what they had before the unions. But I can't think of anything aside from that!

You can't know how inspired by Poland the rest of Christendom is. When the Iron Curtain fell, Poland disappeared. We forgot you. Yes, we forgot Poland. Poland was overshadowed by other victims who kept complaining, year after year, despite living in freedom. No one spoke of Poland, despite Poland having sustained such high losses, and having survived far worse conditions.
But the past five or ten years, the rest of the world has been watching Poland with amazement. Such courage in the face of very strong enemies -- I'm speaking of enemies who are destroying other countries now. We look at Polish people who remained in Poland as examples of how to unite as a people, and stand against the enemy, a united front. Such unity is what brings tears to the eyes of those of us whose countries are now being destroyed by the same enemies that Poland stands against. You are a nation of tough, courageous bastards -- an inspiration to us all.

Magz xxx I think you should take a peek at some fashion history. Because fashion has always reflected the sociopolitical situation of its day. It is actually quite useful to study fashion as a part of understanding history. And, to study history as a way to understand fashion. Things like the New Look of Dior (1947) being a direct result of Western Europe wanting to look forward after war, or how the new extension of childhood into teen years in the US (and then the rest of the world) created youth fashion that had never existed before. These things were a direct cause of the sociopolitical and economic situations of the time.
So have a better look around this channel, as well as channels like Crows Eye Productions. Fashion history is a relevant and interesting topic of study.

when i started getting into vintage fashion, one day my mum called me and said she's got an authentic dress sewn in the 50s from my great-gran. My first thought was all the puffy petticoats, plenty of skirt... First, I was disappointed. It was washed, fabric was very thin with orange and white geometric flowers, it had huge ugly metal zip in the back, it was short, plain, very modest. Then I realised that in 50s my gran wasn't Marilyn Monroe. She just came back from Siberia, where she watched her parents and siblings starve to death, she managed to get a factory job and a sewing course and she had two children when shops were empty.

I am from South Korea, and the fact that our histories from both countries are so surprisingly similar means so much to me. Both South Korea and Poland were literally destroyed during the WW2 (Poland by the Nazis, Korea by the Japanese Colonial period) , and during the 1980s both nation struggled and fought agaist the government and its system for freedom and respect. Also the geological similarities between Korean peninsula and Poland (i.e. they are surrounded by both sea and land and are neighbouring a lot of other countries so it’s advantageous when considering trade, this is why both countries were attacked so much throughout the time) gets me to consider and love Poland as a close friend of my country. Our countries both have a prosperous, beautiful but also a sad history. Thank you so much for making this video, it meant a lot to me and gave me a chance to know more about Poland.

My family is made up of polish and Russian Jews. I really appreciated that you did not talk about the fashion, but about the history, and that you weren’t shy about mentioning the holocaust. I think I’m going to show this to an old Polish woman I‘m friends with who survived the Holocaust. She was a young adult when in the concentration camps, and after she was freed, she decided to not miss out on anything else in life. She got a scholarship for a really good university, learned English and German, and pretty much turned into a fashionable young woman who was educated and fairly wealthy. She moved to America with her husband in the late 1950s (and she managed to get free tickets, too), where unfortunately she was underestimated. Instead of getting a job that involved typing, which she was very good at, the organizations in the U.S gave her a job sewing buttons at a factory. They assumed that she spoke no English and wasn’t educated. It took her two years to get out of the factory job and find a better job. She spent much of her time traveling the world with her husband because they wanted to see everything. Today, her house is filled with mementos from all over the world. I think she’ll really enjoy this video, since she was and still is very interested in fashion and history.

All Eastern Europe was affected like it. Westerners hate us to come to work menial jobs but the reality is that after the collapse of USSR, the people had no idea how to think for themselves as almost all intelligent, property owning people were killed or banished to Siberia and the population (proletariat) was being brainwashed for decades to follow unquestionably the authorities which, as might shock you, lived very lavishly while the rest starved. Space and arm race was the reason for huge famine in some Eastern Europe, namely Ukraine, there are interesting videos addressing this problem, though i warn you, it's not for the faint of the heart. in 1990s after the fall of the iron curtain, people were left with ruins of the old system and no clear plan (as nearly nobody had education or any idea) how to manage the country on their own, we tried, we failed, we keep on trying. Yes, there are lots of corrupt, thieving, drug using alcoholics among my people, i don't deny it but I can understand how poverty affects people, some just give up.

Edit: When I visited Poland I stayed in the middle of nowhere, stayed in cities for a couple of days and never talked to any locals, so I can't talk about the people themselves. (Also, consider I'm white and cis, not a target to any discrimination) Only later I learned about Poland's discrimination and racism, mostly because of the recent news. Of course I don't love THAT part of it (who the hell loves injustice), I liked the culture, the landscapes and the intricate history. Unfortunately I think you're mistaken, Polish people, especially right wing, focus too much on history and tradition, sometimes even to use it as nationalist propaganda. Also the majority of Polish movies from last decade is set in either communist Poland or second world war. We still have the mentality of Polish martyrdom from the 19th century that shaped the country and causes our victim (and the "chosen nation") complex. Rn the government revisions the history and in 2018 they tried to prohibit people from painting Poles from WW2 as anything other than saviours of Jewish people and heroes even though Polish non-Jewish people were capable of antisemitism as much as any other nation. We as a nation, especially the right wing, don't move on at all, we're stuck in the last 2 centuries mentally, glorifying war and unable to progress :(

That's not true. Don't know if you have any old family photos like 1960-1980. When I look at my family (including their friends, "common" parties or "fajfy" (as my grandma called them)) I can tell when they were taken. All of the photographed ppl looked almost the same way in the time of taking them, but this "the same" was different for '60, '70, '80. The "split" of the fashion appears in early-mid 90 and continues up today (or that's because I was birn late '80).

100 years of beauty is supposed to be about beauty trends, not about "the common party". That's why cut (the channel that started this series) incorporates political statements of each decade into the fashion/make up/hair trends instead of only looking at the historical aspect and just picking a random look that fits the common mass like this person does. She's misinterpreting the purpose of these original videos.

Thanks for this video! It's very beautifully done. One PROBLEM with the video is that it doesn't clarify to the West that Poland had a SOVIET installed communist / puppet government. Poland WAS NEVER liberated after WW2. It was simultaneously invaded by the Nazis AND THE SOVIETS. Poland didn't gain political FREEDOM again until 1989. For Poland, the war lasted from 1939 until 1989. This needs to be more clear and better known by the world.

    • @gnas1897
      @gnas1897 9 місяців тому

Poland didn't get simultaneously invaded by both the Nazis and Soviets. Poland got invaded by the Nazis on the 1st of September. After a long time, the Germans notified the Soviets that the government in Poland had collapsed. Then, the red army peacefully entered Poland from the east to reach the sphere of influence agreed upon in the Molotov-Ribentropp pact. The Soviets were to take and unite western Belarus including Białystok with the BSSR and western Ukraine with the UkSSR.
When Soviet forces entered Poland, the Polish government ordered Polish troops located close to the Soviets to not fight back and instead just lay down their arms and surrender. It's also important to note that by that time, the Polish army was not capable of continuing to resist the Nazis.
And although I'm not educated on Poland's recent history at all, I can assure you that Nazi and communist rule are not even comparable.

I am sure with 7000+ comments someone else has mentioned this: It was the Polish people that brought about the victory in WW2 when it happened. The Poles had cracked the German code machines even before WW2, and they passed the information and knowledge of the machines to the British, who used the concepts the break the codes the Germans were using in the war. This allowed the allies to know what the Germans were up to, and allowed them to do all sorts of diversionary plans to convince the Germans that D-Day would not happen where it happened. Without the knowledge of the Poles far more people would have died before the war ended. And then the US and British sold out to the Russians and let Stalin have Poland. To be fair, they probably did not have a choice, but it is one more example of the Polish people doing great things and still getting shit on by everyone else.
One last thing: This video was amazing. Karolina you really do this well.

How come you haven't heard of WWII? Anyway, let's go back. The name Poland was derived from the most powerful of the tribes in that region in 10th century - Polans. From 966 it has been a kingdom until the Partitions of Poland happened. After that Poland was off the map for 123 years, regained its independence in 1917 and right away had to fight battles for it to keep it. Then, just 22 years later was attacked by Germany and only 17 days later by Russia from the opposite side. Poland didn't surrender and did what it could to resist both. However being outnumbered on a mostly flat land doesn't give you much chances against 2 giant empires. Britain and France both broke their promises and didn't come with any help. Later on during the WWII Polish pilots defended London in a Battle of Britain. After the war British Government demanded Poles to pay 107 650 000
pounds for using their planes, fuel, airstrips, food, accommodation, equipment and ammunition. It was paid with the gold that Poland had stored in Canada in 1939.

Polish officers were shot by the Germans of the Gestapo, not the NKVD. Putin agreed to accept this fake hypothesis in order to enlist the support of the Polish authorities and obtain preferences in the gas market in Poland for the benefit of his oligarchy. But by coincidence, the passenger plane with the President of Poland crashed near Smolensk and his plans did not materialize. This all seems like some kind of mysticism (plane crash), but even God himself was apparently against Putin’s deceitful machinations regarding history.

Isn't that the truth. My Babcia came to Canada back in 1929, so she managed to escape the horrors of WWII in Poland. I have visited my family who still there various times and they are such a kind and genuine people. However, I can TELL that the older generations had it rough. They don't smile in pictures (even though they are laughing and happy moments before they are taken). And I can just tell by their mannerisms that they have had it rough. Some, not able to speak English manage to communicate with me as best they can. The most hilarious was my cousins wife, in their little village; I made a remark about "accidentally" going to Russia and upon hearing Russia - she turned her face to the sky, made a fist, and with disdain cursed the word "RUSSSSSIAAAA"

@Alexander Fomin yeah there are maybe 5 that people would regularly use. The original isnt one of them funnily enough.
Question for russian, do you skip pronouns often?
In polish, we dont say 'i go/do/eat' but rather just 'go/do/eat' or rarely 'go i' (but not do/eat i). The verb has the correct conjugation for the pronoun so its not necessary to include it. Actually it sounds weird to include it unless you are stressing that i (not someone else) am eating or i eat (not another verb).
I imagine its similar in czech/slovak as the languages are similar (ive been able to talk with czech people without major issues). How does it work in russian, im curious?
