I’ve been doing Ancestry for years and I still learned several new things from Crista. Most interesting was that the 1930 census includes information on veterans as well as the wars they were in. Thanks Crista for all your videos over the years. ❤
I was just recently able to successfully add 6 generations from Malta and I’m on the verge of finding connections to Sicily. Fortunately DNA related family already had a lot of this done in Ancestry. I didn’t realize how effective and useful the census information is. The R for radio is amazing and I will look for that from other parts of my tree. This was a very good presentation. Thank you!
Both of my parents were story tellers. Each told many tales about their parents, so I knew from a young age all my grandparents names. Sadly, I was born after they were all deceased. So glad my parents loved to tell stories!
My "a-ha" moment: learning how to read the census record (the part about R and FDR was interesting!) and also how to compare information from hints and add what I see into my tree.
I have learned so much. my a-ha moment is the R listed under home data. That is so interesting. I appreciate that you are easy to follow and understand as I'm 80 and I don't always understand without going over and over information being given. Sad thing is I'm the oldest in my family so I don't have relatives to tap for info. I'll keep entering what I know.
I have been doing ancestry for years and get a subscription when I have time. I learned the census privacy laws of the countries and the 1930 and 1950 census are free. Also how to enter data the get the best hints.
That is an important reminder... a woman's maiden name, not her married name should be listed. If I don't know it, I will put in a "?" [eg: "Grace ?"] until I can confirm it.
I just got done not long ago over a month ago doing my DNA with ancestry and ever since then they show on my ancestry feed on the web page there that I've got a cousin every day this goes on a six cousin or seven cousin and it's a half cousin and I'm finding it hard to believe because all these people they're showing they're very prominent people in history I mean I've got an ancestor to sign the declaration of Independence and I'm can't wrap my head around that I've got generals and I've got lieutenants from the revolutionary war and I'm like this can't be this can't be right. Not complaining I'm loving it.❤
Crista, like always, you are awesome, I learned something new about the census, the meaning of the R for owning a radio and the story behind it, and wow, super interesting ❤❤❤
Isn't that fun?! There are so many little things like this in so many of the records we use for family history. String them all together and you get some interesting stories. ♥♥
Healing yes....Have All Access...Great Tool....learning how to filter the search....I have looked at the Collections as well....I ignore Family tree hints...for now..
Make reasonable guesses when you don't have complete information vs. leaving blanks. That we can open different screens and go back and forth between them. Prior to today I was only entering addresses to the state level if it was in the U.S. Also that the index is not always as complete as the image view.
I learned I should use the 3 letter month abbreviation instead of the month # (Jan rather than 01). That is super helpful since I learned a couple of years ago that one of my cousins had also worked on our family history but did not know that day #3 precedes the month when recording dates. I am in the process of vetting my info because there have been times I have been too eager to add someone else's findings without thoroughly checking it out. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks Crista! Any chance there is a session for more advanced users pending? e.g DNA matches using Protools. Looking at cM shared total, relevance of segments and approx age of your matches and how to triangulate and build their tree to then link to yours?
It's a little tricky to do DNA sessions since I can publicly show the information regarding my DNA matches. I'm still working out the best way to do this.
On a person’s profile page, on the Facts tab and in the Timeline column, there is an Add dropdown. Clicking that Add will open a dropdown list of events, including Adoption. Selecting Adoption will open a form with Date, Location and Description. Entering that info, will create a Timeline record. That is how I have recorded that someone is adopted.
@@roxannaconner3941 It depends on which family you are recording them under. Is this someone who was adopted INTO your family or someone who was adopted OUT OF your family. If you are recording them under the biological parents and you know their birth name, record that and then enter an "alternate" name and put in the adopted name. If you are recording them under their adopted parents, you can put their adopted name as the primary name and the birth name as the alternate.
I’ve been doing genealogy for awhile but it’s nice to have things validated. Like quite a few others, I enjoyed learning about the R in the 1930 census. 😊
My paternal grandparents emigrated from Germany. They lived half of their lives in both USA and Germany. So, their names are listed on records in American English and German. How do I list their names? Both languages or just one?
I was informed that I have to document everything that I found and where I found it. It’s so others can follow the same path and document everything you found is correct. I had done years of research and the computer crashed.
what if we are adopted? I'm trying to do it from the closest DNA on ancestry but cant find info. i can't fill in the first 7, can i move up to my closest in line?!
Technically, you can put whatever you would like into the suffix field. Personally, I wouldn't use the suffix field for that piece of information. I would use a WEB LINK (in the SOURCE column on the profile page) and link to the FamilySearch profile.
New things are fine if the old things kept working. For the last month I have have not been able to save/accept any of the HINT's (census, death, find a grave) in Ancestry. Unable to find a support email and on it's help site it just says ask the users of the internet for help. I have two friends having the same problem.
Are you using Ancestry on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone? If on a tablet or phone, are you using the mobile app or a web browser? If a web browser, which one? And, what troubleshooting steps have you already tried? For example, have you tried a different web browser?
@@CristaCowan Chrome, firefox browsers. Rebooting. Clearing cashe. Have been using Ancestry for 15 yrs and never "not" been able to save/accept hints and populate the person with the hint info. Currently I "can" ignore them and say "No" to hint that does not belong to a person. This has been happening since before X-mas. Also tried on a laptop. Same results. I can manually transfer data from the hint details and see and download the image if there is one. The biggest problem is remembering all the folks I have to go back to when this finally starts working. It does not stop me from working just can't save the hint to the person.
@@CristaCowan Desktop and laptop, Chrome, Firefox, Windows, Linux, Cleared cache, rebooted, etc. I can use the hint, extract text and image just cannot save the hint to the person. Hi Crista 👋, I knew to always use the females maiden name only, but I have a ? On nicknames. My father was named William Earl Jr., but always went by Mike. Parents couldn't agree on a name so they named him one and called him the other. Are you saying I should leave "Mike" off and never mention it? Thank you for all great info. 👏👏👏 Happy Tree Building. ❤❤❤
Yes. ALWAYS enter women into the family tree with their maiden name and their maiden name only. When you add her spouse, the system automatically considers that she likely used his surname during her lifetime. And, yes, you can delete people from your tree at any time for any reason.
I need to send a picture of an Ancestry error to get it corrected but I don’t know how I can do that. A 1910 census saved to my tree is labeled as 1880, but it is clearly a 1910 census. What can I do?
Technically, you can start a family tree with whomever you would like. But, for beginners (which was who this session was for 😉) it is best to start with themselves and work back one generation at a time since they likely won't know who any of their ancestors are beyond parents and maybe grandparents.
I learned it’s better to make a reasonable guess than to leave something blank. Thanks for that tip!
"A guess is better than a blank." 😉 Thanks for being here.

I learned about the vertical family tree view and that family members can be easily added from there. Very helpful! Thanks

Thanks! I’ve been trying to build my tree for over a decade.
I learned to not use nicknames. Was never sure. Always hoping to learn more.

How do you label males that are adopted? With born last name or adopted last name?

That is how I have recorded that someone is adopted.
But, in the tree, what last name do I use?
@@roxannaconner3941 I put their legal name, because that is what Ancestry will use in the search algorithms to find records.

Crista, what I learned: how much great info the census records have. Didn't realize this.
Loved the video. I learned that we should only put women’s maiden name in their profile.
what if we are adopted? I'm trying to do it from the closest DNA on ancestry but cant find info. i can't fill in the first 7, can i move up to my closest in line?!
I have used the suffix portion to fill in the ID# from Family Search. Is that ok to do or not.

Do women use MAIDEN name? If we start to build tree, can we delete family members, if DNA comes back different?
Yes. ALWAYS enter women into the family tree with their maiden name and their maiden name only. When you add her spouse, the system automatically considers that she likely used his surname during her lifetime. And, yes, you can delete people from your tree at any time for any reason.

Please just don’t willingly save information from other’s trees without confirming the information yourself!
