    Love how close the racing gets in UDL/Spec racing. Plus the LEDs makes spectating even more exciting! Thanks for the great production on these videos, they're getting better every release.

    This was really fun to watch. I'm a beginner, and apparently slow learner. I had hoped to attend your race in February. I'm guessing my entry fee is being forwarded to the March race. I look forward to it. Thanks for making these videos. And thanks for making my new Tiny Trainer. Hoping to fly it for the first time tomorrow morning at The Bowl.

    Great video, so interesting to see other forms of drone racing. To the new pilot, though, this is so intimidating. It's like everyone is speaking a new language...especially during the tech checks. Gotta start somewhere though and your videos really help.

    Great video. Would be really nice if you could set up the camera showing you while you are flying, to show your hands instead. So we get a perception of the type of speed and responsiveness on moving the sticks.

      @@headsupfpv supposedly Custom is running betaflight defaults except 1.15 slider on master multiplier. Given what I know about tuning, it doesn't make sense to assume it would produce a faster quad

  • @eedok
    @eedok 12 днів тому +1

    This race was the weirdest one I've been a part of. Didn't realize UDL has evolved to the meta state, last time it was much more of a casual race so not having an optimized craft wasn't such a disadvantage. Qualified like 28th, never once broke a 30s lap, but somehow finished in 11th. Was like flying with a stuck throttle cap, so frustrating when you can't actually race with the people and just constantly playing garbage man :p

    • @headsupfpv
      @headsupfpv  12 днів тому

      argh ya i totally agree man. Hopefully some improvements happen !

    • @FPVYeti
      @FPVYeti 11 днів тому +1

      There wasn’t really a meta before whooptopia. There’s several things we have known to be faster, most of which is on the website (and the rest is widely known after last year’s whooptopia and frequently discussed on discord/facebook). But only the pilots who really care that much about UDL follow that and so it’s hard to call it a meta. Most of the pilots who raced the Igniter class at whooptopia this year were vastly underprepared from my understanding.
      After whooptopia, there’s more pilots paying attention, and that’s really the main difference and why we could now say there’s a meta.
      The results of Whooptopia are still very unclear in terms of one quad being faster than another, specifically by how much and why.
      As I’ve said, there are things known to be faster. Unfortunately there’s not a good way to combat that. Mostly because it would require banning slower parts, which the community seems to be against, or it would mean locking additional settings which are difficult to spec check and in some cases, not applicable to many builds. To even things out much more than we have, based on what I know, would require the league to be stock, not spec.
      So instead the focus is to just educate and let people make their own decisions. That’s why the website is so extensive in the resources it provides. It’s just up to the pilots to use it.
      That being said, it’s unclear at this time if the faster quads were simply using already known tactics that most people didn’t didn’t use due to not being prepared or if there’s something new that needs to be discovered. Right now, anything people are saying about what the meta is has either been widely talked about for at least 6 months and largely ignored (until now), or it’s speculation.
      The spec is definitely at a weird place though as people are learning that a standard/typical build is faster than being unconventional and are starting to care. But we are also kind of just out of things to reasonably ban and there’s only so much more we can do to restrict firmware without going stock.
      I think there’s just a lot of shock which leaves people feeling impulsive and unsure what to think. But I think it will pass and the people who are serious about the spec will come more prepared and in the meantime, we are scrubbing through possibilities and testing theories to see if there’s anything I’ve missed in the past 6 months as far as having a slower or faster build is concerned.

      @@FPVYeti Doing a limited class without having a stock pick for motors and electronics is pretty pointless tbh, different combos can react much differently. Setting the RPM limit so all quads achieve the same top speed would be better, or having a specific AIO and motors to use, along with a tune and esc settings all racers use would also work. Just relying on an RPM limit won't work, there are other variables at play, such as a better tune and bigger motors more aggressively hitting the RPM limit than weaker motors or a worse tune, resulting in large top speed differences.

    • @eedok
      @eedok 9 днів тому

      @@FPVYeti I just have no idea where these conversations are happening, admittedly I only fly UDL maybe twice a year being far away from the UDL hot spots.
      Looks like there was blurbs added to the website but unless I'm visiting the site on the regular I have no way to tell that they happened.

    • @FPVYeti
      @FPVYeti 9 днів тому

      @@PineyJustice we do have strict requirements for motors. We do not require a specific flight controller but there are really only so many to choose from. The rpm limit does have a max rpm. The tune factor has been tested and doesn’t seem to be real factor at play with this issue. We also do have spec wide restrictions on esc firmware and we also have historically restricted esc settings even further for the big races where there’s enough manpower to spec check it. But if a big race says they don’t have the time to check settings then there’s only so much you can do.
      But sometimes it just takes things happening for things to get more serious. This league would never be able to exist as a stock league just starting out… because nobody took it seriously enough to give that level of commitment. 3 seasons in and now I’d say at least 1/3 of the active community seems to be serious enough that they’re ready for that.
      After this year, Whooptopia has communicated to me that they will be finding time to spec check esc settings in the future.
      Things happen, it gets more serious. I take this league more serious than anyone. But the league itself can only be as serious as the people are ready for and want it to be.
      By the end of next season, I expect that we will be at a point where being any more serious means being stock and I expect people will be ready for it at that time, and so the league will be ready for that too.
      Spec is currently extraordinarily strict, however. And even where it’s at, the differences between the best build you could possibly do and the worst 40g build you could possibly do, I think 90% of ACTIVE race pilots in the igniter class wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference at all, and 99% wouldn’t win or lose a race over them. The differences that are being talked about here and in the community are extremely subtle in the bigger picture. But to the highest level of pilot, even subtle can be the difference between winning and losing. And that can be a whole world of a difference. So the conversations make the differences sound bigger than they are. Because to these specific few pilots, it is a big deal.
      But that’s what takes us to the crossroads we are at. Either we can expect these highest tier pilots to make a build that’s in line with the competitive standard or we keep cranking the strictness of the spec until we are stock. And we are getting very close to being stock. As almost all of your suggestions are already in play.

    • @headsupfpv
      @headsupfpv  11 днів тому

      Well, in *theory* they should all be the same. But it seems the rpm limit struggles at these higher RPM’s as well as the frames making a big difference. It’s a bummer but we saw a pretty big variety in speed across quads!
