Well done Filipe great surfing and the win, overscored on the 9 but still deserved to win the final
Filipe definitely won this heat, easily. BUT, I feel like the judges were way over-scoring. Maybe they were compensating for the scoring travesty that occurred in this same matchup, at the surf ranch.

I'm brazilian and agree, that wave was overscored, but Filipe deserved to win, he surfed better the whole championship and at this finals.

Filipe was overscored but definitely deserved the win unlike the surf ranch where Griffin was overscored but didnt deserve the win.

Filipe's 9 and Griff's 7.17 should have been scored almost equally. The best wave of the heat by far was Toledo's 8.3. These judges are incompetent and should have to show us and the surfers how they arrived at these ridiculous scores.

Yeah, seemed very high, but have to remember it's all relative to the conditions of the day and the other waves in the heat. With that said, if that was a 9, then griff's 7.17 was a 8.5
I agree, although making 4 cuts at the top of the wave is difficult, but it deserved a maximum of 8.

Its not just the overscore but the fact that that kind of overscoreing can completely change the momentum in a heat, like it did! Obviously the regular judges from the contest had left and not waited for the finals. EFF you WSL

Congrats to both Griff and Philipe for being in the final . I wish they could just surf without FLAPPING their arms about . Style used to be valued , looks like its been ditched in order to achive as extreme an attack angle as possible . . . ANDY IRONS would giggle watching this !

Sort of in agreement but I've noticed the judges have been scoring good fin blows really highly these days hence the score. I saw this at the surf ranch too. Either way felipe won the heat for sure as Colapinto barely finished a wave

Does anyone know who the judges actually are? It would be nice to know who’s on the panel, their experience and what country their from. So many times so many surfers are either directly overscored or underscored. Someone needs to start putting the judges on blast.

Tolido picked the better waves,,,but Colepinto surfed with more variety and style .... and intelligence in choosing manoeuvres according to the wave development - shimmy stalls, and impossibly elongated cut backs that flowed...
Toledo... looked forced , playing to the crowd ....turn off. And worse ... his moves were predictable.
Colepintos surfing superior rail game ,,,keeps you on edge as you dont know wats coming next that comes down to spatial IQ and creativity... cant teach that

WSL holds contests at multiple world-class breaks, yet always two foot slop. Judging is questionable in many heats.

obvious favoritism and bias, these judges are ridiculous - actually scoring a person surfing a wave is so open to interpretation, they obviously were playing to home crowd - same as they do with americans on their home turf

I think the Brazilians are seeing airs underscored, while Ethan Ewings turns are getting higher scores. Smart for Filipe to surf that wave the way he did. If it was Ewing or anyone else it woulda been a 9 too.
the criteria seems to be reverting back to turns over airs (unless the air is phenomenal and demands an excellent score). This is why Brazilians have been upset and there have been claims that the judges are moving away from progression. Thoughts on this?
What stikes me is the idea that progression is something that stops. It is also progression to, at some point, move past what we have been seeing. And, as it relates. I don't think most crying about the judging now realize the air game started decades ago. It is just that it is new to them. It all seems so obviously self important.
@@scottthomasen8978 I hear you. The assumption is that turns can't be progressive which isn't true. I personally like the shift to power/turns as long as the value of a good air remains. Both can be very progressive or not progressive. An air reverse on a 3 footer can be achieved by any 12 year old these days so I see why that wouldn't be scored. A solid turn is way more progressive compared to that.

O Filipe foi o melhor surfista. Aquela onda não é um 9. Acho que o Filipe percebeu uma coisa, mais vale fazer menos manobras, mas mais consistentes e radicais. O Filipe normalmente é muito electrico vai de manobra em manobra muito rápido, tem de trabalhar mais cada manobra.
A diferença é nítida, Filipi está a 100 km/h, agora o colapênis 40 km/h.
