Ahh fond memories B sqn 79-80 Lt Evans and SSgt Burns. We won the Minor Units Trophy 🏆 at Bisley 80. Sgt “I will fight you for a fiver” Wilmore was a legend.
This is the start of what sets you apart from the dead heads in civvy street..Eventually it will all come together, then you can stand with the grey hair elite in your local pub when you have done your bit.Keep at it!! Don't give up!! Its all worth it!!
My god this takes me back to 1982 and many many hours spent on that drill square. I believe I learnt a lot about myself doing drill, though what preciseley I cannot say. Drill is like martial arts in a way, sort of meditative because of it's precision and your state of alertness. Yeah, I hated drill, but also enjoyed it immensely.
Well put. I was at an Army Apprentice College and recently saw my graduation parade on video. I can’t believe how good it was and how proud I was to be a part of it.
The drill is a bit shoddy but they're in 1st term and in B sqn judging by the lapels. One thing is for sure, you could tell the difference when you got to your regiment, between those that went to JLR and those that did Catterick commando's.
Great place in 74, had a Coldstream gds drill SSM and a Scots gds Sgt, he was a mental case lol. Never did cadets so the other guys had to teach me everything from scratch. Let/Capt Illingworth RH, troop leader. Sgt Paul ? QRIH, Paul Boast 2RTR, and a few others, intake was around 110, about 30 passed out. Among them some great blokes too, Penky RH, Dave Black 2RTR, Paddy Daley QRIH, Seb Coe HC, some good times some bad, have a soft spot for Bovington. 60this year and still recall moments like it was just the other day.
Your SMG drill was different than the Canadians, do recall the across chest hold. Present arms is similar, but ours was basically a copy of the drill for the FNC1 (aka SLR)
I was also in that troop but not in the video. Think I had twisted my ankle on the assault course. The drill sgt ended up working in the house of parliament when he retired
I never saw the point of SMG drill. As an infantryman though, I only did rifle drill with SLR and SA80. Interesting to see a Guardsman as the Drill Instructor at the RAC Depot.
Drill Sgt Major Eric Bamforth, Coldstream Guards was our 'Drill Pig' in 72/74,. he would have had us over the assault course if we had drilled like that !
I was there during that time. Cant remember the drill instructors name but remember he was in the Coldstream Guards. Guessing that they had just startd to drill with the SMG I was in B Sqn. SSM Mc Cloud, and the SSM O' Callaghan.
Now! Today we're going to do marching up and down the square. That is unless any of you got anything better to do? Well, anyone got anything they'd rather be doing than marching up and down the square?
Fabulous that was my Sqn. B we were not Pay Corp!!! Mixed AAC and RAC. Harry Shearer though was pivotal in my development as a young man mainly in how to be shit scared of a man that would be prepared to jail a pig that wandered onto his God's Acre! The farmer was furious.
@@williamfalcon7351No, I didn't know he'd passed away. Thanks for telling me. Have you any idea whereabouts his family are ? Again, many thanks for replying.

Drill Sgt Major Eric Bamforth, Coldstream Guards was our 'Drill Pig' in 72/74,. he would have had us over the assault course if we had drilled like that !
Amen to that, he was ruthless!
Dear John, I remember him, but do you remember this. he was an angling nut!
I remember him he was scary but in Sept To Dec 75 I think a grenadier took over after him.
