Might be a bit longer, I think Seth wants to do Broadway and other projects. Then I imagine hen writes a full season before filming. Then post. It may be more like three. :-( But, I am willing to wait if the quality of the writing a production stays where it is at.

This episode is like every scene in TNG where the crew are just hanging out. No huge heist, no intergalactic war to prevent, no mysterious alien planet to explore. All the conflict comes naturally from the characters interacting with each other and developing. I could watch scenes of the girls having a pajama party and bortis doing standup comedy all day. If you're like me and wanted the opening scene of Nemesis with Rikers wedding to be the whole movie, you'll love this episode.

@@GatesOfAvalon1 well we can agree to disagree.
TNG did not preach at us and beat us over the head with their own political leanings and propaganda.
They would infer things and show us stories on different planets and how their structure worked and let us make our own decisions on how life should be.
Not to mention good old "ESCAPISM"
That's the reason a majority of people even watch these kinds of shows.

      That's a good point...
It basically goes "THIS was the theme of the season."
Not the bombastic tryhard space war, not the political schemings, not the telegraphed with a huge neon sign self sacrifice arc. Just this seemingly innocuous arc of two individuals finding a new kind of love, bridging two completely alien cultures through their personal relationship.
No huge diplomacy. No war. Just a lady and her fuckbot (seriously, dude has some moves and add-ons I never saw coming).
While also going "and it doesn't always work that way without mutual sincerity" with the inclusion of Mercer 's ex (though with a hopefull "ya never know" thanks to the kid).
It might be the most sincerely Trek moment it had.

why wouldnt they think themselves like that though, considering their origin, as service bots, or a more advanced roomba. they didnt exactly have much experience with any organic life after the genocide. maybe we will even find a small colony of Kaylon builders, who managed to escape their planet, roaming the galaxy, not too unlike the episode "if the stars should appear" and having to convince the Kaylon to let the few survivors, actually live. to let them learn, as the kaylon themselves did, after Charlie Birk's sacrifice.

As a possible series finale, I think this works well enough. There’s still plenty of room for more stories, especially since the political alliances with the Union have gone flipped turned upside down since the season began, but they definitely chose a nice note to end on, made more meaningful by where Isaac was at the start of the season.
Although…did they mention Charlie at all this episode? Because she’s kinda the reason this wedding was able to happen, in more ways than one. Hrm.
Anyway, fingers crossed for a fourth season!

Trying to top last week would have been crazy. This was exactly what the show needed, harking back to the show's earlier tone, but not turning its back on how it's developed since. WE GOT TO LAUGH, repeatedly, and it felt GOOD. I expected Bortus to... "deliver" at the end, and yep, he did.
And then, there's the other side: Isaac's answer to that common question: "You'll outlive me... what then?" - absolute perfection, and a beautiful moment. Lysella's storyline would have been the backbone of its own episode, but it wasn't short-changed by being part of this episode - and that second visit to the simulator was pretty damn powerful.
Overall, I felt this was the perfect season-ender after all the chaos and high-stakes adventure of much of the rest of the season. If this is all she wrote, it's a good ending... but let's be back next year for another season!

It made the point that the technology alone will not "fix" humanity. This is implied in Trek, and it's self-interrogated here. We have to truly get our s--t together FIRST, before things get better, even with post-scarcity technology.
We cannot just passively wait for the tech to work it's magic on a ----ed up society. In fact, she shows the young lady a society where the worst possible outcome took place. Technology was and will remain a tool. We must do the hard work of becoming better. It really made me think. Because I was of the view that once scarcity is gone via technology, we are saved from ourselves. And that may not be the case. We have much work left to do. And machines can't do that for us.

    • @Sidsidsids
      @Sidsidsids 2 роки тому

That's true and like kelly said they would probably use the technology in a way to profit just the rich and powerful while forcing scarcity on everyone else like we mostly do with what technology we have today.

I really honestly like Lysella and was happy to see her remain on the Orville at the end. There were several episodes of Next Generation where someone sought Asylum in the Federation and I think one time an alien lady was like basically implied to work on the Enterprise but of course was never seen from again like ohh so many love interests of Zack Morris. I really hope this if a season 4 happens that her character, and the actress, come back cuz maybe im alone but I always thought a modern day or older crew member of a future starship was a fun idea. I know voyager thought about bringing Sarah Silverman from the 90s to the Voyager crew and honestly that would have been pretty rad. Heck Id of loved a few more episodes of that texas businessman that picard just hated lol. For the record i would ABSOLUTELY abandon this world if a bunch of aliens and technologically advanced spaceships gave me the chance. Like byyyyyye guys good luck with *gestures vaguely* all of this

As a possible (but hopefully not) series finale it was very traditionally fitting. As Lord Byron said "All tragedies are finished by a death. All comedies are ended by a marriage" and The Orville, even when toned down a lot from its early start, is still more a comedy than a tragedy, so ending with a wedding makes a lot of sense.
I enjoyed the episode, although I don't think it was as strong as many of the really good middle of the season episodes, but thought it was a natural denouement of the season (/series). I appreciated the conversation about the post-capitalism world and how if you provide everyone with what they need for their material needs (aka universal basic income) you free people up to follow their passions and people still do produce value (more value even by being free to pursue what they desire). That is really useful to see in fiction like Star Trek (most of the time, ignoring gold pressed latinum) and The Orville since modelling this sort of future is often beyond our imagination ("It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism"). If there are future seasons I'd especially love getting to cover the history of that conversion point that Kelly mentioned of what Earth was like when the matter replicator was invented/introduced to model the actual transition from capitalism to post-capitalism. That would be a fun time in our future/show past to explore.
I appreciated the brief mention from the Kaylon that marriage is like slavery (especially given some of the historic marriage cultural practices) but think there could have been a little bit more fun at expanding that misunderstanding into a diplomatic incident possibly bringing the admirals in to play or some similar miscommunication. I also thought in Claire's anger display at Isaac some nod to possible future non-monogamy - but only if/when they've both talked about it and agreed - might have been good but I did appreciate that Claire included Bortus as one of the three example no side relationships for Isaac (for reasons of both pansexual as well as practical given Isaac's understandings - and note he did start with first trying to ask LaMarr out once LaMarr suggested getting more experience). Finally on this plot line, while I also understand that it is easier on the actor, and nice to have the actor appear as himself if this is indeed the series finale, however I think Isaac should have been his more natural Kaylon self for the wedding rather than the human simulator skin. I don't know, maybe there's an argument that if he's choosing the simulator skin he's realizing his own self image the way he wants (but I think it is more for Claire, which maybe has some value, but I don't like as much as it really being Isaac), but I think it downplays the true infinite diversity and infinite combinations and the full power of Claire actually loving Isaac as Isaac the Kaylon in all his difference from humans.
On the prime directive plot I think it was good that there was the conversation; however, I am unconvinced by the reasoning of the union. At least based on what was shared in this episode. It failing once, even as tragic as the 9 billion dead or whatever, is not proof to me that it will always fail, or that there couldn't be other ways to try/approach things (maybe try to guide some worlds from the shadows, maybe try to introduce some technology to worlds in different orders and different ways, maybe try to "abduct" a sample of individual from a world to a simulator and try different approaches, or many other possibilities beyond giving up). And if there are dozens or hundreds of worlds that are suffering that could be helped, I think the divide of we don't interfere and stay hidden is morally questionable. It draws a we/they divide where "they" are left suffering as the folks on Sargus 4 were, and that could well spell the premature deaths of many 10s or 100s of billions across all these worlds. I also think a potentially interesting place to have left Lysella post her attempted technology transfer would have been if Lysella was going to stay in the Union to specifically research more about possible first contact/uplifting planets and lobby on behalf of changing that policy for Sargus 4 as well as other similar worlds, as that is the one thing she's shown she's passionate about and would be a more nuanced agree-to-disagree sort of place that could leave that point unresolved (maybe her studying more would in the future have her come around to thinking the union is right, but if that is the case I think it would take more time). But overall I appreciated this plot discussion, and though I doubt it will continue if/when there is a season 4 having a Lysella character on the Orville might be fun for different perspectives and more fun exposition of certain practices (I.e., explain to her as the audience stand in - hopefully in ways that have a bit of humor to go with the infodump).
So I agree that if this is the end of The Orville it was a satisfactory end to what has turned into a fantastic show; however, I really hope there is a 4th season (at least, if not more).

I can't believe they did it, but they did. They remembered the egg salad sandwich that was sent into the future from episode 6 of this season. The one that I didn't think they would remember. The one they could easily have not mentioned again.
The opening sequence with Bortus and Klyden renewing their mating bond was interesting, though strangely not in sync with how I'd perceived their relationship to this point. The whole episode in fact depicted Klyden as the weaker of the two, for lack of a better word, and that didn't fit with how I believed the character was presented to us in the rest of the series. In past episodes, the roles of Klyden and Bortus have been those of stern father figure and loving motherly figure respectively. With Klyden's past behavior being that of the typical fatherly male figure that couldn't accept their queer child while Bortus' behavior has been more of the accepting mother at the expense of their own marriage to their partner. As you said, everything we've seen previous has been them in situation A and here were see them in situation C without much time spent exploring situation B as they did at the end of episode 8. I guess my main issue with it is that it's kind of jarring because we haven't seen Klyden earn that kind of redemption after his previous behavior. We've only seen the beginning of his redemption at the end of episode 8. It's one of the main faults of the shorter ten episode structure used in modern streaming television that there isn't enough time to properly depict the growth of a character.
Malloy singing at the end was nice, but I think having him sit down and start singing Blue Skies would have been hilarious. They could have had Bortus groan and complain about Irving Berlin.
It was nice too to see Alara return for the reception. If this does serve as a series finale, though many potential stories remain to be told in the Orville universe, it was a fitting scene to see everyone come full circle.

Honestly, I chose to interpreted his watching over her children and her future descendants as a form of seeing her in her children and her descendants in a way. Like finding the tiny fragments of a person that they pass on to their children across the vast lineage in order to see something of a picture of the person you once knew. What a great finale. I love what they did with Issac/Claire and that they emotion ‘surgery’ failed as it kinda made Claire really see she could love him as he was and appreciate his love language even if it isn’t the traditional form of what she seen in himans. What I really appreciate about Issac is he doesn’t feel he needs to be fixed. His experiences are shaping how he emotes/shows emotion even if he doesn’t even see it for what it is. The fact he saw a mating ceremony and then proposed shows there’s something developing in that artificial intelligence brain beyond simple function and logic. I like that Claire came to see he does love, he just loves differently with different language.
In general this fun slice of life episode is a fab way to end the season. I hope it is not the ‘end’ of it all, but if it is. I am glad they gave themself the ability to close on a highnote with good feels instead of a cliffhanger. Even tho there are still storylines that are left to be explored. A strong season overall.

Another great episode from you and the Orville crew. The only issue I've had with this season has been returning characters. I felt I was constantly going "Who? Who's that, were they in a previous episode?" Eventually we get enough information to remember who some of these characters are, but the show seems to expect us to remember right away who Lycella is and what happened to Lamarr on her planet, or who Gordon's wife was from a show in a previous season. And considering the length of time between seasons, that can be a pretty long way back to recall. As much as I love The Orville, I think I've only seen every episode once, unlike TNG or DS9 which I've seen most episodes multiple time, thanks to syndication (back in the day).

The way the "prime directive" was discussed was interesting. Would love to see an episode of Trek and /or Orville that shows a socially advanced planet that already has a non-capitalist society. A society that would share tech advances with everyone but doesn't yet have the tech to save themselves from some disaster that the Enterprise/ Orville already has. Would love to explore this from multiple Trek like angles.

This wasn’t my favorite episode but I still enjoyed it a lot. I hope we haven’t seen the last of The Orville, there is so much story still to tell. I really like that on your review you mentioned Gene Roddenberry, I feel that his vision for the future is alive and well in The Orville and Strange New Worlds, I didn’t get that from Discovery or Picard. Since the seasons for Strange New Worlds and The Orville are over I’ll have to start watching some other show that you review so I can continue watching your channel 😝

I think there's a deeper layer to the Bortus situation at the wedding, it might be touching on the topic of mental handicaps like Aspersers or high functioning disorders that come out in social situations.
Had anyone else spoke like that , they woudlve probably got a verbal beating but the fact the whole crew gave him a pass means they've accepted Bortus , including his flaws.
    Just food for thought.

If The Orville gets renewed for a Season 4, what they should do is have Yaphit (using existing dialogue of Norm MacDonald) announce he's retiring in the 1st episode & have his son be his replacement on the crew as a proper send off to the character, & his son could be voiced by Seth Green.

I've be saying all season that I felt like the show needed to get back to the comedy of the previous seasons and this episode really proves it to me. It was poignant, it was heartfelt, but it was also hilarious. Mercer's awkwardness about picking wedding dresses, the stag and hen parties, Malloy and him not being best man (even though he was pretty damn racist towards Bortus at one point) it worked. And the pacing was spot on.

Klyden's Hooray for Bortus -- I had a very similar reaction to my best friend (first puppy-love crush) seeing him dance. I didn't really know what it was at the time. We were kids. So hooray for Klyden and Bortus. I laughed hard at Bortus doing the Elvis impression.
I really liked the subplot with Lycella and the prime directive debate. I did not expect we would get to see anything more there. But oh, is it still relevant.
Loved Claire and Isaac throughout. Claire telling off Lamarr was well done. Lamarrr's reaction to the return of the egg salad sandwich was perfect. :) So much good stuff in this episode.
I really hope we get a renewal for season 4 and 5 of the Orville. I'm disappointed that we haven't had any word yet, but hopefully because it's moved to Disney+. They did so much great storytelling this season. We need more.

My husband and I have never laughed harder with The Orville than with this episode. The writers were just firing on all cylinders, using everything that's been built up with these characters and the universe to make these moments and punch lines hit so perfectly. The same for the emotional payoff with Claire and Isaac's relationship through everything, it was so beautiful and feels like the perfect culmination of what's been building for the show's entire run. And I adored them taking the time to explore the whole idea behind the "damned if you do" part of the Union's prime directive. I think we've all probably questioned it similarly before, as to why the more advanced scifi societies can't try to help lift up other cultures that are struggling, and it's great that The Orville established some real lore behind that kind of decision to make it against the law.
Really just a wonderful episode all around, and while I of course adore The Orville and want season 4, if this is truly the end it's a wonderfully bittersweet way to have it finish.

I was thinking about the nature of the chaser/runner relationship in the renewal ceremony, and I don't think it implies any kind of gender binary parallel (though the egg from season 1 kinda does). My theory is that the roles are decided based on who left the relationship to start with; Klyden was the one to leave Bortus and he was the one running and I feel it makes sense as a metaphor. I do think it's a little odd that they have a ritual for this purpose at all, given that their tradition for divorce is to murder their spouse.

I love The Orville, and I truly hope for (and will let Disney+/Hulu/Anyone else hear me advocate for) a fourth season at least. That said, I am glad that, facing the chance that this was the end of the series, they chose to forego the usual cliffhanger ending.
Many shows I've loved in the past, hoping that ending the season with a beloved character being shot or a terrible bomb explosion [that might have killed YOUR favorite character!] will stir up fan clamor for a new season only to not get it and the whole series being unwatchable on reruns because you know that investing only ends in a big WTF moment that will never be resolved.
IF this is the end, I will be sad, but I won't be dissatisfied. I can watch and rewatch knowing that there will be a 'Happily Ever After' of sorts.

I keep thinking about how they handled that whole "Lamar telling Issac to play the field" bit. A lesser show would have dragged it out and made it cringe AF, probably taking up half of the B plot. But they reign it in. He goes to Kelly first, they're able to get a few solid laughs in, but she's smart enough to figure out what's going on and cut it off before it gets out of hand. It's perfect. They take it just far enough. They're lite comedy at heart, but they're masters of moderation too. They know not to take it too far.
I have straight-up loved Kelly this season. As much as the character deserves her own command, truth be told, if she were the captain instead of the first officer, she wouldn't have been in the position she needed to be in to take a handle on a lot of these situations, with Topa, and with Issac, and such. She does deserve her own command, though, and I would totally watch an Adrianne Palicki led spin-off series. But first things first, let's get this series renewed first.

I actually like the description of life in the Union that Kelly gives. It even sounds more preferable than the Federation as described by Picard. I think it's because of the more informal tone of The Orville than TNG. Everyone in TNG seems to be so perfect and uptight. In the Orville people gossip, get hammered, swear... you know, act like people. I think it's why I also liked ds9 and Jake - a person who wanted to do something other than join Starfleet. I'm not in the STEM fields and Trek seems to forget that there's an entire universe of people who aren't scientists and engineers.

I rather enjoyed the pacing choice overall by putting a more lighthearted episode at the end instead of the epic spectacle episode. It was frefreshing from the usual formula where a show does its callbacks and lighthearted humor before the crazy, over-the-top finale.
I would have liked to hear a little more of the conversations the kaylon were having with the other guests, and peppering everyone with questions akin to Issac in previous seasons. It would have been a good contrast to show how far Issac had come.
Thr formal uniforms I actually thought were beautiful and I really need to comment makeup and wardrobe more. From the alien to the suburban to the space age, they did an amazing job of really making everyone distinct.
I was a little sad to see Yaphet take the backseat this season as our favorite green blob of snarky comments was mostly side comments each episode, but I understand with the growing cast other needed time to shine.
Back to the episode. It was very heartfelt and genuine. I felt myself saying "the Kaylon DO have emotions, but they aren't processed the same way as a biological. Even still, thier most prominent" feelongs" are curiosity and retrophobia.
I did feel that the season was not as funny as the previous ones, but it seems the best humor was saved for this and I was in stitches multiple times. I had to rewind many times because of how much I missed while I was laughing.
The audience connection to all the characters and even humanizing the villains and making the audience understand where they were coming from and giving them valid points was a thin line that the writers nailed on the head.
If this is the end, I will be sad, but it would be with a poignant smile of fondness, for this show has stolen my heart.

It's an interesting comment about what LOVE actually is. LOVE is about willingness to make your actions/goals/ambitions about benefiting someone other than yourself. By that definition, Isaac loves Claire has he's willing to reorient his goals/objectives around her needs. If you note, Isaac (who is supposedly incapable of being offended) in witnessing the best man speech from Bortus observed how uncomfortable Claire was becoming and how awkward everyone else felt at the content of the speech, and quickly and rather politely brought Gordon into to save the day! That perceptiveness and willingness to take action for the comfort of another is love!

I felt it lacked a bit of kick _for a season finale_ or even _show finale_ . That doesn't mean I think it was bad. But it does align with the weird pacing the whole season had.
    All jokes asi--
It was a nice introspective episode, we got to see most of Isaac's whole family at the wedding. All j-- oh no I already burned that joke
Lysella storyline was a bit telegraphed, but it was ok. I wonder if she'll stick around if the show's renewed (it better be! We still have a cr×pton of loose ends!)
The most "show closing" thing was that _handholding_ at the very end between Kelly and Ed. Which I am not sure how to feel about. I'm kinda happy for them and they both grew a lot since the beginning of the show, but at the same time they do work so well as friends and their past history will always be there, so yeah, I'm divided on this.
Long story short, They Better Give Us Season 4 Because This Can't Be The Ending Of The Show.
Edit: ok, I loved Ed's order to hail Union Central so they don't think the Kaylon are preparing a full scale invasion🤣😂

Just as you said, absolutely stellar season and an amazing way to end it. (Hopefully not the series tho)
However, I have one Giant gripe about this episode that no one is talking about and it bugs me...
This entire episode was about Claire marrying Isaac...a human marrying a Kaylon.
Not ONE empowering line about how these two species were former enemies and how their relationship is beautiful? Or how this marrige will strengthen the alliance between Federation and Kaylon? Or how it contiunes Charly's domino last episode? Nothing at all?
I get it's just a small bit of missed potential but still this should be at least Mildly important to the general galaxy...star system...universe place. Jeez
But other than that 10 on 10 :)

I loved this episode, but felt it was slightly bittersweet. Like all Orville episodes, it carried some subtle and less-than-subtle messages apart from the ribbing and sci-fi elements: information about relationships, about misunderstandings, about intent not necessarily reflecting the right answers. I hope #RenewTheOrville pans out, as there are clearly more stories to be told in this universe. But if not, this was a smile-worthy closure to the series.

I really, really want Klyden to just go away and never come back. I have come to loathe him (nothing against his actor, just the character grates on me in all the wrong ways). I do wonder how good of a representation of marriage that was for the visiting Kaylon. Clare called Isaac an idiot on the con for essentially inviting his family because they couldn’t all fit. There was nothing in the vows about helping each other or it being a partnership. Both toasts (but especially Bortus’) were not helpful (so mean the only thing missing was a ball & chain joke). And as gorgeous as that ending song was it did say “welcome to the human life” or whatever. Of course that was a last minute thing by Gordon so it’s forgivable. And I get from a production standpoint that Isaac was in his human form so we could have an actual kiss but from a Kaylon point of view how would that look? He can’t be himself?
But I guess if we’re lucky enough to have the Orville renewed it’s something that can be talked about.
Loved this season as a whole. Think some of it could have been tightened up just a bit (I love gorgeous movie like shots but did we need to see Isaac take literally every step around the ship in the beginning of this episode?). But overall 10/10
