I watched "Orphan" for the first time 2 nights ago and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Tonight I watched "First Kill", and I could say the same! I think Isabelle Fuhrman's age difference actually works to the film's advantage, because now she comes off as kinda eery and unnerving, as someone like Esther really would. Sure, it's a bit cheesy, but I liked it.

For me, it was pretty much a "paint by numbers" film UNTIL the huge reveal from Julia Stiles. That threw the movie in a whole new direction and well exceeded my expectations. Never really liked Stiles, but she knocked it out of the park in this one!

@@spookyastronauts they couldn't have gone for that because Esther is still ultimately human the reason that there wasn't a hand come out the water she broke her neck in the Fatal angle and if she didn't she's paralyzed so she can't really I guess hold their breath very well so now she's underwater so yeah it's pretty much over for her at that scene that's why I said they could only do a prequel back in the day

I thought the movie was great tbh. The twist was unexpected and I loved how that dynamic back and forth between Esther and the mother was handled. Only thing I say should've been better was the fact they didn't dive deeper into Esther's backstory as they should've. The family's secret should've been explored more too. Felt a lil rush at times.

Actually in the first film of the Orphan Esther is really dead because when the mom kicked her in the face she broke her neck... If you rewatch the ended one more time you can hear her neck cracked. FUN FACT: Director William Brent Bell use a body double for Fuhrman as the camera pans out. Actress Kennedy Irwin who also played young Esther Albright served as the double. So everything is practical no digital facial features or anything like that. This was a long waited prequel/sequek that the writers did their homework to call back on the story from the 1st film when Esther was staying with that family and they was in a fire or something like that plus the Asylum escape... Like you said I need to rewatch the 1st movie again.

I hadn't heard of this film until a few years ago when there was a story on GMTV in the UK about a couple that adopted what they thought was a 6 year old girl but DNA tests put her at 22 and that she had a genetic disoreder where her bones didn't grow. The girl and her biological mother both denied it. They said her strange behavior alerted to the fact something was wrong as she started threatening the families other children.

  • @omarortega207

I agree. I also would had liked to had seen Leena (Esther) 's origin, before she entered the psychiatric ward. Here in Los Angeles, California, it's been yanked off the big screen, after it's second week after it's theatrical release. I'm surprised, as I thought this movie would had been better received. I've read good reviews from film critics, and mostly mixed reviews from the audience. I watched it in a theater with five people, myself included.
Personally, I really enjoyed this movie. I'd been wanting to see that kind of twist in a horror plot for a long time, and I think it was done well.
This movie reminds me of "Stepfather 2: Make Room For Daddy" in that it is a completely unnecessary sequel of any sort, but because the actor is very good playing the main lead, one can't help but feel curious as to see how it goes, and if it's as good as the first one. I read a article that the filmmakers are game to make more prequels, like what happened with the Insidious franchise, only if Isabelle Fuhrman agrees to reprise. I'd say better stop at this one as I wouldn't like to see Isabelle be type cast as Esther, though I think it is already the case. Rather I want to see her in other movies instead.

About to watch in an hour! In terms of her visibly looking older, I can let it slide a little bit because I feel like maybe we as the audience, since we know her secret, we see her maturity in terms of appearance, but what if the characters in the movie see her in a different light? (Meaning how she looked in the first). So we’re in on it because we already know. Can’t wait! So excited!

2:34 I wrote a sequel where Esther lives through the ending of Orphan (2009). I just said that when Kate kicked her and 'broke her neck,' that she actually just dislocated Esther's shoulder, (something Esther secretly knew how do to from the start.)
I borrowed that idea from Lethal Weapon 2, with Riggs' straight-jacket trick. She would do that to escape her straight-jacket, but it cut the hell outta her wrists and neck, hence the scars.

I do agree with your review :) But I will say this : People watching this movie EXPECTING a total Horror movie, with lots of scares and spooky vibes are going to be really disappointed. If anything, this movies reminds me of "You're Next" or "Ready Or Not".
In short : Perfect movie for Halloween!
Also.. I re-watched the first movie, and I do not agree with some critiques saying that the first movie was more "brutal". If anything, the kills in the first movie (Oprhan 2009) were.. very cold? And when I say cold, I mean that on this new movie, the "kills" were more "funnier" and "goofier"? I don't know. But the tone of the first 2009 movie was super "cold" and serious, while this one is more light.
That is a total "entertaining" movie. And it did delivers. Solid 7/10 in total for me. 2/2.5 points missing simply because the overall plot of the movie was alright, but I wanted more kills.. ALSO, as you said, I wanted to see the origins of Esther and how she become who she is :)!

On one hand my expectations are slightly higher following your review, I’m surprised you liked this one as much as you did! Based on the trailer my expectations were pretty low, and I’m a big fan of the first. But, your review also confirmed my concerns that they would turn this into a slasher with a bunch of gore. I loved that the first was largely a psychological film on how this girl/woman infiltrated this family and how she manipulated them all. It was far more about the psychological manipulation than the any of the “kills”. (And I think the nun was the only actual kill in the first as I recall? Aside from when the mom kills Esther at the end).

heyy ema. its a bit based on a true story. it hapened in my country Czech republic. it was named Kurimska kauza. Its honestly more horryfiing in my opinion. Also one of the actors who was in the film is czech :D

The original or this one? I talk about that for the original in this video, but I read it’s not confirmed as it happened at a similar time to this movie? There was no way for them to know that info then, I could be wrong though?

Your review is on point. The saturation and the lights felt like some instagram filter lol.
It does take away a lot from the plot the fact that you already know from the first movie who she really is.
Then the other twist is revealed and I was thinking that Julia Stiles character did something ilogical to her intentions by acepting Isabelle Fuhrman's character into her family in the first place. I dunno, movie logic I guess.
