Let's be honest. We all bought the Steam Deck so that we could play the classics again.
That's so true 😁
I mean, if you bought the Steam Deck to play the latest games, you're pretty goofy
@@binary1123 dude really?
@@binary1123 why's that?
@@binary1123 Not really, bro. There are plenty of new and recently released graphically low-end indie games that are perfect for the Steam Deck. Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Hollow Knight, Cuphead. Even Hollow Knight 2 which hasn't released yet, I can confidently say would run smoothly at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.
The only reason i want to buy a steam deck is to replay the ezio trilogy and rogue during work brakes
Ezio trilogy is on switch as well
It’s a gateway drug. First it’s AC then RDR2 then cyberpunk and before you know it; you’re sitting on the toilet playing GTA V!
That’s literally what I’ve been doing and it’s perfect. I’m on revelations right now
@@jonathannegron9914same I am doing it too on revelations too
@@User71956 🤣 that sounds weird yet funny but I'm more partial to Chinatown wars when I'm on the crapper
Hey man this is the type of video I was looking for.. testing series of games please you should do more of this ❤
No joke, I’ve been using it everyday since I got it in August. For some reason playing a solo session in GTA online while watching TV on the couch feels perfect. Hopefully the next one has a better battery.
Thanks for putting all this work in!
Keep up the good work as always!
Always!
I installed a gen 4 ssd 1tb, installed cryo utilities and optimised the recommended settings. On medium 800p I’m getting a locked 40 fps on Odyssey with very little drops or stuttering. But it’s early days, once I get into big cities it may drop but atm it’s way smoother. I recommend cryo and upgrading the ssd asap for a bit more stability. But some of the older titles like black flag, unity and syndicate the game engine just isn’t very happy pushing over 30fps. Thanks great video!
Odyssey once you get to big cities runs significantly worse, problematic areas, thanks for the comment!
i played all these early gen badly ported ac games on my 360... im fine with 30 that i used to have before and enjoy my favs portably... lol, I've had my deck for a year and im still shedding a tear for having such a device for the price
Oh man definitely I wouldn't blame ya the deck is the future and I just know valve will keep on updating it
Apparently, the new Mesa drivers will be launched in the next months and shader compilation time will be waaaay shorter, pretty much like on Windows. Shader cache size will be way smaller as well. It will be a game changer for Steam Deck.
Can't wait for that
It is so crazy how playable it is on steam deck, thank you santiago
awesome video! exactly what I was looking for! thanks
Weird thing is that even on Windows Assassin's Creed Revelations has shader compilation stutters. Saw it happening with GPUs such as AMD R9 390, AMD RX 580, GTX 1660S and RTX 3060 but I don't remember this happening when I had my old GTX 460. 🤔
Just found out about this channel today and it's fabulous. No bullshit just great gameplay and info. Keep up the great work!
One thing to report about AC Odyssey in particular, lowering FOV will improve performance (it's also preference as I like a closer camera, anyway). So, I recommend playing the game at 85% or even using mods to play at 75% or 65% FOV. I play the game at 75% FOV since I like that view. I only wish there was an over the shoulder view during navigation, such as walking and running, and the camera would only pull out during parkour and combat.
To be fair, ac unity and syndicate have more crowds with lots of npcs so it can be hard to process all of them at once and achieve a solid 60fps.
It’s weird how he was getting 30 fps and lower in Athens jn AC Odyssey, I normally got 40fps in Athens on higher settings than what he used, and i played through all of odyssey on steam deck too and never had issues just a locked 40 fps
Barely played my steam deck and and now I’m hyped af to do a marathon😭
Thanks. I was wondering how they'd do on Steam Deck.
If you have those games on Steam instead using bottles or lutris it runs pretty good.
well, you are 90% alike to what i have always been imagining of. Your content is excellent btw.
DXVK 2.0 has improvements for shader compilation on the Steam Deck.
We just have to wait for the AMD Vulkan driver to support it and Valve to implement it into Proton Experimental. This is going to make a massive difference for non-Steam games on the Steam Deck. Hopefully soon
solid video
How was gamepad support for the older games? For example, I remember that AC1 doesn’t recognize the triggers on an Xbox controller, and you had to download a file or something to fix it on Windows. Did you have to do any kind of similar troubleshooting like that, or did the controls just work out-of-the-box?
They worked out of the box mostly, I had to select the xbox 360 as the controller in the in-game AC1 menu, the triggers are still not recognized but there's a community steam input for Steam Deck that maps the keyboard buttons to match the gamepad's, with that we can get triggers to work!
AC2 looks to be extremely CPU bound by a single thread which is likely why it wont do a solid 60 all the time. The GPU and CPU are underutilized here which is definitely indicative of a poor port despite it being an awesome game.
Edit: After looking at the PCGamingWiki entry for AC2 (and subsequent Ezio games) it appears that the affinity can be altered to remove the single core lock bug. Not sure how to accomplish this on SteamOS however, but for windows, you can set it to use everything but "core 0" and it fixes the single thread at 100% problem.
I can imagine if there's a deck2 with rdna3
Should be able to play all AC up to Valhalla in 800p60 high atleast
Revelations, and AC1 are the only ones I've never played before. I love every single one of the AC games, except for AC III, I have no idea why it just never clicked for me. My favorites of all time are Black Flag and Origins. No idea why everyone loved Odyssey more, Origins was a lot better, and set the foundation for Odyssey.
I think it's agreed that Origins is better. Also, I heavily recommend you play AC1 then Revelations as it perfectly wraps up the Altair and Ezio saga in a way that legitimately made me cry for a long time.
I’ve installed Ubisoft launcher and it doesn’t work on my steam deck, how did you managed to get the launcher going? I tried everything and it doesn’t work for me
The France one was legendary, It got so much hate, I loved it.
I’ve got a question. Do the games run better if bought on Steam or the same as Ubisoft Connect? Thinking buying the games on sale from Epic to Connect and hearing all these situations where Connect seems to be more easier than Steam? But also heard shaders cache is better with Steam and less stutter? Especially Syndicate
I’m not too knowledgeable on these types of subjects
Bit late, but they will run better on steam as steam downloades the shader cache with the game, meaning basically there will be less stutters for the first few hours of gameplay.
Otherwise after that they should run similarily, buying on steam just makes that initial hurdle easier.
Buying it on Steam is better. The game will download a portal of Ubisoft Connect for you to facilitate launching the game (even if you don't have UC installed). All you really have to do is link your Steam account to Ubisoft Connect, in my case this was simple because I'm a legacy user of Uplay (before we ever had Ubisoft Connect). For some reason, though, if you buy anything older than Odyssey, you will need to use Protontricks to "force" install Ubisoft Connect, so that the game launches using UC instead of Uplay. I was perplexed when Origins launched with Uplay because the game released in 2017, and we had Ubisoft Connect by then.
this is probably a dumb question but do you need internet for every game on the steamdeck? so like you can playoffline games?
No. Valve have also updated offline game mode recently. Now while playing offline you get achievements and playtime. Also it is better to turn on offline mode in settings, if you know that you are going to play without internet.
wow in just 10-15w you can play it all.
Would love to see a remake of this video with Cryoutil, 16 GB swap file, Huge Pages, 4 GB Vram ecc...
That's all applied here
@@SantiagoSantiago Ops sorry! Amazing video by the Way, I decided to play ALL the assassin's creed on my steam deck, i stopped playing after revelations, seeing what deck is capable of made me excited to play them all
I'm also trying out my AC games on the deck. Brotherhood is using 1 core at almost 100% for some reason. Should I try a different proton or something? Thank you for the video 🙂
It can happen, the first locations with many NPCs can trigger that, I was using proton experimental
can you help me I can't play assassin's Creed revelations it say Ubisoft luncher error code 1
800p on 7" display is over 200 PPI, which is "retina display" territory
why my steam deck can't play assassin's creed valhalla.could you tell me how to solve this problem.thank you
Santiago, en promedio cuanto dura la bateria? en juegos como black flag o rouge ?
En black flag te diría 2-2:30hs aprox, si ponés un lock a 30 calculo cerca de 3hs
How did you get AC1 controls working? I have Steam version and controller doesnt work
You need to go to the control options inside AC1's in-game settings and instead of keyboard, choose controller
What is the best ac game on sd
I thought on steam deck you where always supposed to turn off vsync in games because the deck has it's own vsync running at all times. Or this mid interpret this? And one wouldn't want to run it twice?
Damn, Unity looks better than Valhalla, where is ubisoft going with these games...
unity is a trash game though
I7 9700k rtx 3070 ti I don't have any stuttering on any AC game and my PC is very strong 🤷🏿♂️
On odyssey I have zero stuttering with ultra graphics. But play everything on 30
the temperature 🥵🥵
yeah burning
hmm those stutters shouldnt be happening for this level of hardware, at least not on paper. I could understand it on newest ac games but for ezio trilogy? I suspect there is something funky going on with driver/software implementation rather than pure raw power insufficiency. Slower cpus for example i5 2400 runs them fine in windows environment. steam deck cpu should be somewhat on par with non K i7 3770. Other than that it was interesting, do you have plans on installing windows on this handheld?
I ordered a 1tb nvme drive, I will be able to install windows soon to test that, the stutters so far seem to be shader compilation related, all that I recorded was after deleting the compiled shaders folder to start from scratch, this was the first launch of each of the games, they got smoother as time went on, DXVK 2.0 or DXVK with async enabled should help, I will do more content as this gets updated, right now I'm very limited due to storage, maybe the new ssd fixes this problem, the 64gb internal storage is emmc, much slower than an SSD
Also, forgot to mention, if you own any of these on steam natively instead of uplay, it should be a better experience, since they download many of the precompiled shaders to get a smoother experience overall
@@SantiagoSantiago ah thx for response. I recon its not going to change much purely by changing to nvme drive, i have this notion in my mind not sure if true, that those sd cards and original nvme only increases load times and dont do much for frametimes. My random guess it's linux/vulkan implementation that is causing those stutters, but we will see i guess👍
I'm limited by storage because I have to delete stuff all the time to do new videos lol
For me Unity keeps crashing all the time, I've played about 8 hours and I've had 20 crashes so far. They usually happen after I've been playing for about 15 minutes, so halfway through or near the end of a mission. I've looked around everywhere and I can't see anyone else with this problem though which is annoying, people on ProtonDB say the game works perfectly. I played all of Rogue and AC1 with zero problems, but Unity just crashes too much to be enjoyable.
I've tried verifying game files, playing offline, and even uninstalling Decky just to be sure but nothing helps
I'm more amazed you got it to work
When i’ve tried to launch the steam version of ac1 via steam deck, a Window popped to register it, and by mistake i’ve pressed register now and it redirected me to a webpage, crashing the deck lol
LOL. The pain.
I wonder if Origins would run better with "that other executable".
Probably 😁
So if i only get 40fps i should lock it to 40fps and change to 40hz so I'll get a much smoother experience? I don't have a steam deck btw lol
Yes, if you get only 40 fps, then lock it to 40 fps and use a 40Hz refresh rate for a smoother experience
Will Steam Deck handle Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 15?
I will try soon :)
30 fps for Valhalla on high setting? Can’t wait till mine gets delivered tomorrow. I’ll probably just go for medium and be super happy
Have fun!
@@SantiagoSantiago thanks. I barely slept last night and just played the game haha
Weird Currently playing Assassins Creed 2 (15 hours in) and have never had fps counter dip below 60fps. Have same settings as you as well.
Might be because I have it installed in my internal drive (512GB Model)
What are you doing that it says 99% batter and Andy 6 minutes left haha. Or is that charging
6 mins left for full charge, it slows the charging speed when close to 100% to protect the battery
@@SantiagoSantiago yeah I realized that after writing
imagine what zen4 can do for steamdeck..better fsr and im sure most AC can be close to 60fps
Whats zenx
Honestly steam should have removed the 64gb model in mine vision it simple not a good version of the steam deck. The problem is with AC odyssey is that u will alwyas have hickups on the 64gb model because the internal SSD is to small, but also capped at 500mbps which will result in data delay from loading as it requires 1gbps at times on load spikes. Because the game doesn't even fit on the 64gb model, u need to push it towards the SD card and yea that's further away in the pipeline which creates even more delay to access data fast, and SD cards are mostly capped at 150mbps mostly ~80-100.
This will get more and more visible time moves forwards, but even in older games also. U will for 100% get locked in bdo with screen freezes that are not fixable because of the read speed of the storage on the 64gb model, but have no issue's on the other models.
I was wrong here, seems like the 64gb SSD is capped at 500mbps, the slot is still the same as on all models, swapping the internal SSD will put it on par with the other versions.
Athens is horrible i found that looking down when running gives a good fps. I often avoid this city and there is one more place that gave me low fps. Can't remember their name.
how do you get the controller to work?
press steam button > controller settings(under resume game) > community layouts
there you can download a layout that other people have made or make your own. Also make sure the template matches your controls. ex: if you're using keyboard and mouse controls, don't download a template for keyboard and mouse 5 buttons etc.
@@achraf0156 what happens if you accidentally pick the wrong one? can you delete it off the Deck?
@alphahunterd yes you can change it very easily, just get another one
@@achraf0156 no i mean can you delete what you downloaded? not just change it
@@alphahunterd yes you can
Ac 2 one of the worst on steam deck? I got it on max settings and resolution an it doesn’t drop one single fps below 60
same lmaoo
but I think it's because he's not playing the steam version. The performance is overall much better if you get it from the steam directly.
Take a shot everytime Santiago says: "So yeah."
Do it on a livestream, you won't survive 😂
I dont think all your stutters is because shader compilation. SDCard accessing and reading is slow for a game like those. And shader compilation is not happening because of Linux/Proton. Windows needs it too.
Not all, but the huge mayority. I tried on internal storage as well and it still happens, after a few minutes it stabilizes. Windows needs it too yeah, but we are translating DX stuff to Linux, it's not the same, you shouldn't expect the same because it's not, it's translating everything to work on Linux
@@SantiagoSantiago translating dx calls to vulkan does not produce stutters. good work keep it on.
The fact that Valhalla is more resource-demanding than Unity is unbelievable. It looks like the quality of the game was going downhill ever since Origin.
Wait, can't you just install Windows on the Deck to run everything you want natively without using a third party apps and tutorials?
Yes, but Windows isn't a great user experience on the deck right now. I tried it, it's way more work than doing these short installation tutorials on SteamOS, specially for less tech savvy users
Wen vidio. No puede ser q unity sea más estable q syndicate xD
The newest one will run on an iphone
I can’t even play syndicate and it’s DEPRESSING ME
Next , call of duty franchise ??? It would be a hell of a job hahaha...
I want to do it, the issue is that many of them run under anti cheat despite being Single Player, I will update the internal storage first and do a Windows partition for those specific ones and run the rest on SteamOS ;)
I cant seem to get the controls to work on assasin’s creed 1. Please help
You need to go to the control options inside AC1's in-game settings and instead of keyboard, choose controller
@@SantiagoSantiago yeah got the game working now. Thanks♥️
😇
AC 2 is a great PC Port and Framerate can be unlocked, the Deck is just not strong enough to handle the Game that is Single Threaded because PS3 was Single Threaded, disable SMT if you want better performance.
All the issue you got is just because 1 Core is always push too hard.
ac1, brotherhood and revelations were also on ps3 what about them? they work fine here🤨🙃👌
@@ChetanSaini420 They have the same issue, but make more use of the PS3 SPU, remember that AC1 and AC2 where released on a time that Dev's doesn't even knows how to use SPU(Hooo its too hard to program on PS3...).
You can check by yourself, install Decky Loader then Power Tools then disable few thread or completely disable SMT you will see your perf more Stable because Games where built with Single Threaded CPU back then because of the PS3 that only has one and only standard CPU Cores, the others Core was SPU that need to be programmed with program in an bin image format.
