Great job, Greg! My first "real" bow was a 1963 Colt when I was 10 years old. Before that I fashioned a couple of bows out of saplings from the woods behind my house. Ha! My only memories of that Colt now are of my Dad showing me how to shoot it, and, soon after, shooting pumpkins in the backyard feeling like I had died and gone to Heaven! Still haven't lost that feeling when shooting a bow. Thanks!

At present I have two Shakespeares, a Tioga and a Super Necedah, as well as a Browning Cobra two and a Hoyt hunter. Rounding it off I have a Bear super magnum. They all are from the sixties and seventies.

With ya. I've had my Pearson 1967 709 Hunter since the early 80s and I love it. Now I have a son and he loves archery. I was lucky enough to find another identical 709 on EBay for $100. When I got it in my hands, it appears to be NOS. This is absolutely like new. Had the original bowstring and rubber string silencers and those rubber finger guards that attach to the string. The string looks like new as well so if it was shot, it was very lightly shot. We obviously replaced the string for safety but it's a great shooter and my son and I have already made great memories.

I am excited to get back into archery and learned a great deal from your video. Think I did pretty well at $130 for the hardwood version. Excited to shoot with the best of em! Thanks again

I traded a coworker back in 1975 for a gen-2 Colt. Was living snd working for Ecology Corp/Forestry-Butte county CA. Few years later it became the CA conservation Corp. Had that Colt for years. 35#. Loved it.
loved the story. I bought 3 ben pearson bows a couple days ago $20 each. A guy about 15 miles away had a garage sale. He must have had 200 ben pearson bows for sale for $20 each. Also a barrel full of Jet bows for $5 each. I got a Colt, a hunter and beautiful laminated one labeled Automatic Lanes.
I just picked up a Apex 13, same as Colt at the Sawmill trad shoot in Pennsylvania this past weekend. It is in good shape. One feature that caught my eye was a very pronounced thumb rest, never seen this before. 47 pound draw weight. Very dark brown riser with what looks like the center one a I beam. Brown glass both sides. A unique grip. ScottinPa.

I have seen a ben person 62" colt 54LBS would have loved to have bought but i live in the uk and by the time i would have bought it and got it over in the uk with its tax import duty it would cost a lot way above what i could afford you are lucky to live in a country that have great bow makers, have made a few myself in the past but in recent years i have learned to accept what i can get. i like to watch you when you get a new person or should i say oldish person the palamino is my favourite as i have reasonably big hands then the colt and jet one day if i am very lucky i will own one of them. thank you for bringing such beauty into my life love your shows

Just acquired a Colt 7070 (45# 62”) from a man who said the bow had been his dad’s, (Thanks to your video & based on the logo, I know it’s from 1969 ... too bad Ben had recently sold the company by then!), had it strung and threw a few arrows today for the first time.

Greg, Good historical information and well presented. The Mystery Colt is actually a riser that was repurposed into a current production bow. I had a similar experience with a Colt and actually located a former employee who said exactly what you pointed out. The Pearson company wasted nothing and the Colt was often the subject of slight variances as a result of being one of the best sellers and having a very generous riser it was perfect for a slight differences that seldom raised any question by new owners. It may have started life as something else but when the limbs were laminated onto the riser it was made a Colt. I was told that the more common reasons were overproduction of a similar riser and a higher demand for the Colt.
I still have my first bow, my Pops bought it for me in 1972 I was 11. He bought it at earl Hoyt jrs shop off of natural bridge rd. Had no ideal at the time what a legend the man really was... P.S. in my eyes Earl & my Pops are both legends.
Great informative video. Based on your information I went shopping for a Colt and found one offered as “new” on the Fleabay. It is a model 707-62”, x45#@28”and has white limbs back and belly. I haven’t received the bow yet but from pics it appears to have Ine construction with white holly in the center and darker wood on sides. Also has what looks like ‘58-‘65 arrow logo. I can’t decide if it’s a 1965 or 1966 bow. Wishing I could send some pics to you for your best guess, and of course I’m stoked to get it in my hands.

I own the mystery colt. Mine is the exact one in your photo leaned up against the building , it is 54 pound, purchased it on eBay in 2016 and is still in excellent condition. I knew it was different because of the riser but didn’t know it was rare. I wish there was more info on this 7070 model.
You have to dig through the catalogs and piece together what you can. I have found that Pearson would custom make any bow. The odds are someone wanted a certain design, and loved the Colt name. So Pearson made them what they wanted.

A friend of mine had some yards he used to cut and on one of his yards he came across a Ben Pearson cougar 7050 sitting on top of some garbage cans in really good shape he didn't want it and I bought it off him for twenty bucks and I love it

I have a 1959 960, I shoot it off my hand as I didn't know it had that littler offset rest. I had a small area to fix on the limb back and I believe it has green limbs. I covered them with camo duct. Great bow and I still shoot it.
In my 60s I bought a Ben Pearson green all fiberglass bowl that can shoot left or right handed 35 lb I always wondered what happened to Ben Pearson bows they were good and still are good quality bowls I gave that boy to my son and he put it somewhere in his house and he can't. I hope he didn't give it away I don't I have a grandson. For chances birthday last year my son bought him a compound bow he shoots this is an incredible technology on the Bose today he shoots at 11 years old 17 inch draw length and 17 he's getting pretty good with it now that boy will go up to a 30-inch draw to 70 lb. But I remember doing a lot of carp fishing with the beer piercings fiberglass. When I gave it to my son it was still in good shape I collect bows just for the fun of it I call it the prehistoric compound I have one I have one Fred Bear Kodiak left hand bow. I got a black widow recurve bow then I got a bowl that was made from Denver boat company which is no longer in business then I have a bow and it is primitive it came from Papua New Guinealadies there shot that bow I have it today it's a good wall hanger I don't dear drop back cuz I don't want to break it or anything but it is a good collector's item.
Awesome collection bud. Very informative video. I have a Ben Pearson Rogue 7058. Its marked as AMO 58” 50x @ 28”.. it shoots like a dream. You sent me the catalog brochure for it a few years ago. You dated it as being from 1970-1975 due to the logo. Its a hoof then the rectangular box with Ben Pearson inside the box. Thank you again for that info. I have a Ben Pearson Spectre and according to the text on the riser, it has an AMO length of 52 inches. However, when I measure the AMO length with a tape measure, it measures 54 inches.
This is somewhat unrelated to the vid, but i have to give credit where it's due. I am a survivalist first and foremost- but hunting is kinda my main thing. That being said I'm addicted to quality gear that is indestructible. Bow hunting with a traditional bow has been my passion since childhood. You introduced me to ben pearson jet fiberglass bows. They are well before my time. But unfortunately they do not fit my bow criteria. They are too long, to light and the grips leave a lot to be desired- especially since i prefer to shoot off the hand. My first was a 3340 recurve at 35lbs... some minor limb twsit but still shoots! I then ended up picking up my second one which was a 334 longbow at 40#. They are about 60 inches long. I "piked" the bow and cut new string notches and did some minor shaping of the handle (funfact: there is wood inside) because i wanted a little indentation for the web of my hand to index off for consistency Bow came out to 55# @ 28 is perfectly tillered and Is now 52" long when strung it also shoots off the hand. most importantly it is basically indestructible. I'm in love with this bow. Thanks for making me aware of ben pearson with you channel. I found the perfect match.

I subscribed your Channel and love your historical Reviews about Pearson Bows! I shoot an ILF bow with 58“ and 35lbs @28 cause i like short bows. My draw is about 27,5 or 29,5 depend where you measure or what Point you read in the arrow for measurement. I am interested for the predator 58“ but not shure about the poundage. Are these bows smooth to draw? I have limbs Made of Carbon Foam and 45 lbs is no Problem to draw and shoot for 6 hours without a Break! But wood laminated bows are another thing! I wan‘t to shoot 35- 40 lbs cause i often use arrows with 420 grain! Unfortunally it is impossible to test one! Thank you very much!
I know this is an older vid but I have a 69 with the arrow decal on the side. Dated by the logo. It may be a custom order though as its extremely heavy compaired to other bows i have and it looks to be a single piece of rosewood as its really dark brownish red and i cannot find any seams or variance in the grain of the wood
I love vintage bows...just something about the style...I own 4 bear bows...3 are 50+ years old...one of them was my dads..1968 bear kodiak black beauty he bought bran new..a 1969 and 1970..they all shoot amazing...the groups on the paper tell the story...shoot a vintage bow feel the history.
Great info! I just bought a 1959 model Colt on eBay but it doesn’t have a string. Can you tell me what length I should order. I’m guessing a 57inch since it’s a somewhat longbow design but others have told me I need a 56”. I don’t want excessive twist to make the 6.5-7.5 brace height. Keep up the good work on these classic bows!
Awesome vids as usual! Looks like my girlfriend (we share the sport!) got a '63, as it is the second gen design, but the draw length is marked at 28". What is the recommended brace height on these? It's a 60" bow, so 56" seems like the proper string length. I used a 56" dacron endless loop I made for another ben pearson bow (collegiate, I think). It doesn't have fur silencers on it yet, and it is NOISY, and wants to jump a bit. The last issue might just be me, as I'm used to a heavier recurve. Also, the string doesn't touch the limbs, so how is this considered a recurve??? Seems like a R/D longbow to me? Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated! Lastly-you helped me date my Bean Pearson Javelina as a '65, same as me, so thanks for that, as well! I was told it was a 70's, so that was a pleasant surprise!

Bought mine with first five bucks ever saved but like almost all I ever owned stolen. Not sure what kind but 45 lb. Miss it. Purchased about 1973 or 1972. Brown Brazilian and brown apex
My first bow was a maverick. Still have it but no string. Any idea what size to order? Also the white plastic rest is broke off both sides. Wondering if it can be replaced?
The end caps can be replaced. Fault straight forward process. The string is a different matter, if the bow shows AMO Length then you would buy a AMO string for that length. It if doesn’t, then you have to buy a string using this general rule: Long Bows: order a string 2” shorter than the listed length of the bow. Recurves: 3”. Now. You might have to twist the string to adjust the length to get to the proper brace height
We have similar draw lengths could you recommend current production bows in the 500 to 700 dollar range that work well kinda looking for a 62 to 66 amo recurve (already have the black and stealth hunters)
Always thought mine was 45 pounds. It had two exes in back of it and then when I restored it the other day, it had 47 under the arrow rest. Yes, after all these years, I realize now it’s a 47 pounder!
Proven DBG I believe the 3350 is a fiberglass bow correct? If so, those are not a standard size. Easiest way is to measure it and order a string two inches shorter.
Thanks for the great info! I am pretty sure i have a 1965 707. It has the first style logo and is a 707, I think those two things means 1965. 43 on the arrow rest and XX45 -28" at the serial number. 62". One thing that does seem different about mine is it is a red-red fiberglass limb and the riser is made of 4 layers. It looks like a solid piece if you look at it from the front or back, but from the side, you can see the layers. 3 main layers and then the fourth layer ends ups looking like little "caps" on the front where the limbs meet the riser. The layers are fairly similar in color/stain. Ever seen or heard of a colt like this one?

I believe that is was Pine Bluff. Fort Smith is down the road from where my mother lives and I have never heard of it being there, it was always Pine Bluff.
Greg, what do you know about the razorback? I found one at a gun show for $40, and it has become my favorite bow. I've only come across one other, they seem to be pretty rare.

My target bow was my uncles Person pro classic compound bow with a wooden recurve limb. It was the best and beautiful. Person made an amazing bow.

If it is the white holly center, that was only done for one year, 1965. Nice find!!!!

I also have two Bears that were made at his plant in Grayling Michigan. They both have an arrow shelf on each side of the riser.

My 67 colt has same grip as your dads, only recurve I’ve ever owned, I am also a 67 model so the bow and I am are the same age
I have a Ben Pearson Spectre and according to the text on the riser, it has an AMO length of 52 inches. However, when I measure the AMO length with a tape measure, it measures 54 inches.
Could be many things. Big question is does it shoot well?
This is somewhat unrelated to the vid, but i have to give credit where it's due.
I am a survivalist first and foremost- but hunting is kinda my main thing. That being said I'm addicted to quality gear that is indestructible. Bow hunting with a traditional bow has been my passion since childhood.
You introduced me to ben pearson jet fiberglass bows. They are well before my time. But unfortunately they do not fit my bow criteria. They are too long, to light and the grips leave a lot to be desired- especially since i prefer to shoot off the hand.
My first was a 3340 recurve at 35lbs... some minor limb twsit but still shoots! I then ended up picking up my second one which was a 334 longbow at 40#. They are about 60 inches long.
I "piked" the bow and cut new string notches and did some minor shaping of the handle (funfact: there is wood inside) because i wanted a little indentation for the web of my hand to index off for consistency
Bow came out to 55# @ 28 is perfectly tillered and Is now 52" long when strung it also shoots off the hand. most importantly it is basically indestructible.
I'm in love with this bow. Thanks for making me aware of ben pearson with you channel. I found the perfect match.

I subscribed your Channel and love your historical Reviews about Pearson Bows! I shoot an ILF bow with 58“ and 35lbs @28 cause i like short bows. My draw is about 27,5 or 29,5 depend where you measure or what Point you read in the arrow for measurement. I am interested for the predator 58“ but not shure about the poundage. Are these bows smooth to draw? I have limbs Made of Carbon Foam and 45 lbs is no Problem to draw and shoot for 6 hours without a Break!
But wood laminated bows are another thing!
I wan‘t to shoot 35- 40 lbs cause i often use arrows with 420 grain! Unfortunally it is impossible to test one!

I know this is an older vid but I have a 69 with the arrow decal on the side. Dated by the logo. It may be a custom order though as its extremely heavy compaired to other bows i have and it looks to be a single piece of rosewood as its really dark brownish red and i cannot find any seams or variance in the grain of the wood
I love vintage bows...just something about the style...I own 4 bear bows...3 are 50+ years old...one of them was my dads..1968 bear kodiak black beauty he bought bran new..a 1969 and 1970..they all shoot amazing...the groups on the paper tell the story...shoot a vintage bow feel the history.

Great info! I just bought a 1959 model Colt on eBay but it doesn’t have a string. Can you tell me what length I should order. I’m guessing a 57inch since it’s a somewhat longbow design but others have told me I need a 56”. I don’t want excessive twist to make the 6.5-7.5 brace height. Keep up the good work on these classic bows!

Awesome vids as usual! Looks like my girlfriend (we share the sport!) got a '63, as it is the second gen design, but the draw length is marked at 28". What is the recommended brace height on these? It's a 60" bow, so 56" seems like the proper string length. I used a 56" dacron endless loop I made for another ben pearson bow (collegiate, I think). It doesn't have fur silencers on it yet, and it is NOISY, and wants to jump a bit. The last issue might just be me, as I'm used to a heavier recurve. Also, the string doesn't touch the limbs, so how is this considered a recurve??? Seems like a R/D longbow to me? Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated! Lastly-you helped me date my Bean Pearson Javelina as a '65, same as me, so thanks for that, as well! I was told it was a 70's, so that was a pleasant surprise!

Bought mine with first five bucks ever saved but like almost all I ever owned stolen. Not sure what kind but 45 lb. Miss it. Purchased about 1973 or 1972. Brown Brazilian and brown apex
My first bow was a maverick. Still have it but no string. Any idea what size to order? Also the white plastic rest is broke off both sides. Wondering if it can be replaced?
The end caps can be replaced. Fault straight forward process.
The string is a different matter, if the bow shows AMO Length then you would buy a AMO string for that length.
It if doesn’t, then you have to buy a string using this general rule: Long Bows: order a string 2” shorter than the listed length of the bow. Recurves: 3”.
Now. You might have to twist the string to adjust the length to get to the proper brace height
We have similar draw lengths could you recommend current production bows in the 500 to 700 dollar range that work well kinda looking for a 62 to 66 amo recurve (already have the black and stealth hunters)
Always thought mine was 45 pounds. It had two exes in back of it and then when I restored it the other day, it had 47 under the arrow rest. Yes, after all these years, I realize now it’s a 47 pounder!

I believe the 3350 is a fiberglass bow correct? If so, those are not a standard size.
Easiest way is to measure it and order a string two inches shorter.
Thanks for the great info! I am pretty sure i have a 1965 707. It has the first style logo and is a 707, I think those two things means 1965. 43 on the arrow rest and XX45 -28" at the serial number. 62". One thing that does seem different about mine is it is a red-red fiberglass limb and the riser is made of 4 layers. It looks like a solid piece if you look at it from the front or back, but from the side, you can see the layers. 3 main layers and then the fourth layer ends ups looking like little "caps" on the front where the limbs meet the riser. The layers are fairly similar in color/stain. Ever seen or heard of a colt like this one?
I would not doubt it, those were the early years of commercial fiberglass and they were learning as they went.

There was no 60” model 7070, they were 62”. My guess os that yours was modified or a special order.

I believe that is was Pine Bluff. Fort Smith is down the road from where my mother lives and I have never heard of it being there, it was always Pine Bluff.

Pearson did not put names on bows until 1958. How do you know it was made in 1945?
Greg, what do you know about the razorback? I found one at a gun show for $40, and it has become my favorite bow. I've only come across one other, they seem to be pretty rare.
