One of the greatest American bands of any era, and probably the greatest frontman ever. AND an original Jam Band. Love me some Doors!✌️❤️🎶

This album was recorded in 1966 and released on January 4, 1967, making it the very first US album release of the year. Fittingly, the first track of the first record released in the first year of psychedelic rock was titled "Break On Through". Immediately after its release, the Doors went back into the studio to record their next album, Strange Days, which was released in September of the same year, right at the climax of the Summer of Love. That album is also worthy of an album review, or if nothing else a review of its final number, "When the Music's Over".
Also worthy of a review or live stream is one of their live albums, Absolutely Live, which concludes with Morrison reciting his epic poem, "The Celebration of the Lizard" with the band playing psychedelic atmospheric music to back him up. Amazing performance.

Syed, put your mind in a calm state and visualize this band live at the Whiskey A-Go-go in 1967 playing this song live to a packed house. The atmosphere of the audience, the mystique of the band, the dark charisma of Morrison... No one had seen anything like it before.

  • @morrison62

Morrison was a brilliant guy with an iq of 149, which is genius level. In this album, they take on a lot of of complex ideas, not your typical band of the hippie era of the 60's. They were too dark for some people, but l think The Doors were just letting people know that freedom and openess have different outcomes in real life. You cant just embark on a journey and think it will go great.
The Doors got their name from the Aldous Huxley book, "The Doors of Perception", which he wrote when he was on mescaline. This book was written in 1954 and was one of the works that started the beatniks and hippie movement. Huxley also wrote,"Brave New World", which, with Orwell's "1984" are considered to be almost prescient in describing how our modern day life is now. The Doors were saying that there was a flip side to the coin on all journeys, so be ready.

End Of The Night is really an ode to the writer Celine who wrote a book called journey to the end of the night (Worth reading btw).
Much of the chores was "inspired' by William Blake. JM does this on more than one occasion.

Good Analysis as usual! You’re generally on point when it comes to lyrics and interpretations of what the songs mean and are trying to convey. Which is why I respect your views.
Morrison was a night person. He even wrote that he dreaded the milky coming of the day in a song. And he said the days are long and filled with pain enclose me in your gentle rain in another song. A day person he was not! I can relate to that as I’m not a day person either. I prefer the nighttime.
So you are correct in your assessment. Excellent and interesting insights!
And I was enthralled and amazed at how The End fit in the climax scene of Apocalypse Now. It’s almost like it was written for that film. Coppola used that song perfectly and it made the ending brilliant! Especially the the part where Jim sings Kill, Kill! And Sheen is swinging the Machete at Kurtz and chopping him down! It was brutal but he just stood there because he knew he had to pay for all the lives he took before and he wanted to die like a Soldier or Warrior standing on his feet! To die with Honor facing his death like a brave man does. The entire film is a psychedelic death trip into madness and chaos up the river to find a madman and kill him. I highly recommend AN Redux with the bonus scenes! It’s one of the most powerful films ever made about War. The wasted lives and the brutality and bloodshed. How do you keep sane after seeing so much violence and death? The reality is many of those soldiers were damaged and traumatized for life and couldn’t live with it and killed themselves. It was too much pain! How do you live on after seeing your friends get blown apart? It’s almost impossible.
FYI: And the End was recorded in the Dark and they got the final take in 3 tries.
The Doors were into dark themes like the Stones were in certain songs like Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil. They weren’t all love, peace and sunshine.
And that’s another reason I like them. They examined and wrote about the dark side of life, not just the light.
    👏🏻😎

So my sister (1956) was 5 years older than me (1961) and she was a big Doors fan -- still is -- and an "Early adopter" of the records, even at about 12 years old. Part was to rebel against our mom, but she was always excited by the Bad Boy Morrison coz it felt forbidden. I always thought it just felt spooky because I was too young to see the deeper connotations. And I mean Spooky and not creepy.

The whole song is a subtle hint by Jim too the Vietnam war. His father was a high ranking officer in the navy. The blue bus could be a hint to the blues busses young men went on before joining the Vietnam war. It’s like a psychedelic take on the Vietnam war and Jim’s distaste for it.

For what it's worth, this version of The End is not the original, standard version. There was a remix made for the movie, Apocalypse Now and I think I've heard other versions that took explicit material from the original tapes and put them forward in the mix. The original is pretty much the same, but is a bit subtler. I prefer the original mix, although it's interesting to hear those moments that were hidden in the official release.

Great reaction to a legendary album! Love the wall one to. Please do one for Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland. His best album by far recorded in his own studio he built. So many styles and bits of creative genius. No one does jimi stuff as there is major restrictions on his UA-cam stuff. As you don't do official videos etc then you can do it and open up younger people to the world of Jimi's composition aswell as guitar genius. The other one that would be great is The Who - Quadrophenia or Who's Next. Keep up the good work!

When a woman moans in bed you do not have to interprate it, and poetry is a lot like that...a feeling...emotion...not always meant for literal translation. Sometimes you understand it but some things are just like a vibe, also known as imagery. Jim was a poet. And this is a balls to bone masterpiece. (And the snake is death but also rebirth with the sheding of its skin. And the blue bus was the color of the buses that brought new young kids/soldiers to planes that flew them to Vietnam.)

    • @shadyd2544

Poetry is about the emotions the words summon in you first. The actual meaning will change from person to person. The creator may have had something in mind when they wrote it but it's out of there hands when they release it. But many creators enjoy the different interpretations because it makes things interesting. Some don't though there just like "it's about this you dumbasses!". Anyway sorry for ramblings lol.

Nice interpretation of the end at the start however I believe the start of the song anyway was a simple song about the end of a relationship rather than the grim reaper talking to Jim.
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain is Jim talking about living in LA during the late 60s. It was initially modelled on Italy with the canal boats etc but never really worked out that way. LA looked great with that setup but the backdrop to it all was the Vietnam war. All the children are insane was referring to the hippy culture and drug casualties.
I’m sure Jim would have loved you having your own interpretation of it.

    Regarding the blue bus..
As a child in the 80s, I lived on an airforce base in Hawaii.. the public transportation on the base, which carried people to places on-base, as well as to a stop that connected to the Waikiki City bus, were blue buses. I know Morrison also grew up in a military family, and I always suspected those may be what he was referring to. A rather pedestrian answer to the mystery, but they're the only blue buses I've ever noticed. 🤷

A recurring theme many here point to is darkness. I get that, but it’s a means to an end thru the circle… the point being, it wasn’t an end some nihilist game. There is actually a search and in some cases a pathway to the light also. WhT made
Morrison different then most of that era is his lack of fear to explore honestly the dark to find the light. Dylan did this too to some degree. Let’s be honest, the culture was embedded in violence then & the USA back to Ancient Rome were bore in blood. I don’t see it as dark, as much as it is honest to stare some of that in its eye. That is what’s he’s doing as opposed to marinating in it or claiming it’s the end be all. Even in the end, there is a declaration that he must move forward to seek his truth. If one lives in times of nuke, nam, sonic travel and instant communication, then ones vision can be endowed by intensity and the darker side of that can intense. Yet, notice in most works, there is that accumulation of knowledge of ones realm to then be able to more purely then be able to move to its enlightmwnt. That quest is also there in many of the songs. That is the light vs the dark. The earned journey, the courage and the bravery to now fearlessly move forward.

When Jim Morrison was alive he had been working on a spoken word album of his poetry which he had never completed. In 1978, the doors took the recordings and mixed them into an album called "An American prayer". This album is a real lost classic. Morrison was a big fan of poetry that did not need a story, logic, or a point. Poetry for just the imagery and sounds of the words themselves. Create a mood and dismiss the idea of making any sense. I don't know what "Cancel my subscription to the resurrection" means but that line has been burned into my psyche until I die. I agree with him. Don't try to analyze the meaning. Analyze how it makes you feel.
