Vintage Watch Restoration with History - The Vulcain Cricket
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- This is a watch restoration which is a piece of history. The Vulcain Cricket is the watch worn by many USA presidents. This watch is also iconic for its movement with an alarm complication. It is my first restoration on a watch with an alarm complication so lets see if I can bring back to life this vintage beauty.

I got a very rare double signed favre leuba x Vulcain cricket :)
Thank you for including so much detail with every step not missing hardly any. It really helps when trying to figure out where I may be going wrong.
My pleasure
What a fun video with such an interesting movement…two barrels and such a unique keyless works!!!
Great to see some strange watches. This is why I love vintage watches
You make it look so easy. Great video , keep them coming 😁.
Thank you Michael
Thank you, friend. I just acquired one of these and need to restore it, sonthis video is quite helpful! Much appreciated.
Good luck. Don't hesitate if you have any questions
Very nice work. You are a skilled craftsman! Thank you for posting.!!!!
Thanks for you support
Nice cleanup of this Vulcan alarm wrist watch 👍
Thank you Mark
@@FrenchWatchCollector Could you please fix an extremely busted and complicated perpetual calendar/ repeater/ wristwatch 😃?
@@markjob6354 I would like but I need to find one without putting a mortgage on my house 😄
@@FrenchWatchCollector 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣Hint: The German Watchmakers are kicking the butts of the Valley Des Joues Swiss watchmakers. Glashutte repeaters are slightly more affordable than Patek-Philippe, and there's also A Lang & Sonnes in Bavaria. 😃
@@markjob6354 It is true but they are still expensive and risky with my hobbyist skills. On top of it I might lose my wife so I need to find the right watch.
vwey nice vintage alarm watch...I have two Vulcains, an Exactomatic and a Galo Kilimandjaro...nice watches ....I love the bridge design for thw wheeltrain, very unusual. The mvt is beautiful, nice job...👍👍
Thank you as always for the support. I am diving a bit more in the Vulcain range and this watch got me interested in their work. I will definitely try to find other models to restore as they are quality pieces.
Great Video of Type of watch ,which I had one !
Thanks for watching!
I have a Vulcain Meteor III that is not running properly. I hope that it can be fixed as easily as thissss as it's a beautiful mid-century design watch.
Somebody should be able to fix it
This is a helpful video, FWC. Thanks. I had one of these I was going to restore, but it had a broken balance staff, and I could not find one, so I sold it for someone else to have better luck.
Balance staff is a bit more tricky to change but feasible
@@FrenchWatchCollector Yes, I've changed a few. Not on one of these, though. My problem is finding the dang parts.
I have a Cricket cal 120 service coming up. The previous owner sold it because they could not get the back off. It was no problem for my horotec case back opener. The movement looks good but the alarm isn’t working. There’s no tension from the alarm barrel. Hopefully not fatal…
Your work here is a great reference, especially all the unique parts for the alarm. Thank you!
Thanks for you comment. Hopefully the alarm mainspring is just broken and it is an easy fix.
@@FrenchWatchCollector May I ask: when you cleaned the balance jewels did you notice if the side of the jewels that faced the balance pivots was curved? Some sources have reported with the 120 movement the curved side of these jewels should face the pivot...
@@rehajm if I remember it was not a shock protected system. I had to disassemble the balance to oil the jewel.
@@FrenchWatchCollector Ah yes. I see that now...thank you!
Hoping to buy one of these some time in the future. Such classics.
It is a nice one
@@FrenchWatchCollector these also sound so much better than the new ones.
@@HRM.H to be faire I did not listen to the new ones
@@FrenchWatchCollector they sound very muted , much quieter and the sound also lasts shorter. 20 seconds instead of 25 on this movement.
@@HRM.H that doesn't sound good
Great job 👍
Thank you
Wow, that's really nice 👍👍
Thank you Luke
Belle montre! Un video très sympha!
Merci bien
Always liked Vulcain-very high quality movements. Notice the adjustable balance wheels-these went away by the 1950s. Does the brand still exist? thanks again for a detailed disassembly and re assembly.
Yes indeed the movement is really nice and solid. Yes the brand is still existing.
First time watching your channel. 👍
Hope you liked it. I try to put one video a week so hopefully you will see nice videos 😉
Got one of these had no idea Bill used one 😂
Hahahah the vulcain cricket shared a lot of history with USA presidents
If you explain the functions of the parts,it would help us learn the mechanism of the watch, well.
I explain this in other videos. I can do it in each videos or it will be redundant
So cool. That would wake a corpse..!!
😆
Bonjour
How to determine the direction while winding the mainspring before installing into the barrel?According to the cut in the arbor? Please elighten me.
The best way is to remember the way it was when you took it out
Thank you Sir.
@@gopalakrishnanramaswamy6562 you are welcome
Everything was good but beat error 1.2 was not good , Why didn't you adjust it ?
I try to get it below 1 with the balance that need to be adjusted directly on the balance spring. I left it at 1.2 because it is not too far. It is hard to get it to 0 on watches that doesn't have a bit error adjustor on the cock
@@FrenchWatchCollector you have to turn the rolling disc's jewel in the middle of the two banking pins

@@gopalakrishnanramaswamy6562 I use rodico or pith wood
Oh,pith wood too would act like Rodico!Thank you Sir for your opt reply.
@@gopalakrishnanramaswamy6562 it is not the same but I use it to clean the pivot
Cal. 120
Yes it is
Never heard of Obama wearing a Vulcain but his last watch purchase was a Rolex Cellini ref. 50509. Personally I think the Cellini line is a bit overrated and overpriced for what it is. For that money I'd rather have a JLC or a GP.
A new version was given to him.
www.ablogtowatch.com/vulcain-anniversary-heart-cricket-watch-for-president-barack-obama-thoughts/
You are right for the Cellini. For a dress watch I also prefer a JLC without a doubt
@@FrenchWatchCollector The "new" Anniversary model is ugly as all hell and did cost $6500 already in year 2009, so a ridiculous piece of timekeeping. No wonder Obama is never seen wearing that gift he got.
Me too rather take that vintage example You just restored any day of the week. Perhaps not for $6500 though. 😉
@@Ba_Yegu hahaha I can do it for 6000$ 😄
You are right I prefer the vintage models than this new one.
@@FrenchWatchCollector Just to think of it, and off topic, but aren't all the gifts the President of U.S.A gets end as the property of the state, and to be left behind when the President's term ends?
Just wondering how huge treasure of mostly almost unused watches the White House must have stockpiled through the Centuries!
@@Ba_Yegu I have no clue but if it is true that is a lot of watches
