This song totally shifted me to Fleetwood Mac, though I had been working at a head shop in LaGrange, Ill. the Swollen Head. I got a speeding ticket and my dad told me to get a job to pay it off. LOL, Tom Yuknis...Got to know a lot of cool music and then learned to shoot a mean game of pool on the snooker table. Thank you Don Wilson, for teaching me to be a pool shark, though that was in another life. Tons of great brother's and sister's out there.
this is one of danny's masterpieces. there are quite a lot by danny, about 25 superlative songs from his time with fleetwood mac , 25 more from his solo works. danny kirwan is masterfully and magically the most wonderfully beautiful person in modern music
+Billy Piranian I seriously doubt Danny will ever perform...either in the studio or in public....again. I think it might take him places he doesn't ever want to go back to again. Peter is performing again but he's not the Peter Green we knew back in the 60's and early 70's. Sometimes you just can't go home. We have to be satisfied with the fact that Danny is still with us and somewhat recovering, and the legacy of brilliance he left.
I have to say I am new to Danny Kirwan, somehow he escaped my attention all these years then someone played me 'Sunny side of Heaven' and my jaw dropped, such fresh, musical ideas simply and beautifully executed-and with feeling. I am a convert!
Absolutely fabulous song. I am not seeing the other Future Games songs on here tonight. I still play my vinyl that I bought the day it came out 40 yrs ago!!!
Danny is so appreciated, his fans say the most beautiful feelings that I have heard expressed about any entertainer - I hope that he feels the love of so many who are "hungry" for his music because let's face it, he's one of the best. I wish that he would at least get back into writing songs for a living.
Future Games is the best Fleetwood Mac album of all, and this is the best song on the album. I also still have the vinyl album I bought when it first came out.
The structure of Sands of Time is fascinating. "Time-wise," it is 14 beats, 6+8 by my interpretation. I can't talk about this without going totally hyperbolic. I think Kirwan was the most masterful musician in rock at the time he was active.
Danny Kirwan, talento musicale e grande espressività; coesisteva con Peter Green nei F.M sebbene abbia mostrato doti compositive individuali e in questo brano è particolarmente ispirato.
FM has hosted some of the best musicians in this era; Green, Welch, Spencer, Bob Weston, among others. But Danny clearly was miles above all of them. The tuned he wrote and played on have an ethereal feel that the others lack. He was not just a guitar player; he was a composer on the same level as Bach or Beethoven.
+buellosaurusrex Danny Kirwan was miles above Peter Green? Crazy. Show me anyone else who agrees. Peter Green's tunes lack an ethereal feel? Its what he specialized in. Welch, Spencer and Weston were some of the best musicians in this era? Surely not. An era is pretty damn big... Kirwan on the same level as Bach or Beethoven? That's just BS. Amazing to disagree with everything you say. He was a good singer and guitarist and generally a weak lyric writer. His solo recordings were mostly bad. I think Sands of Time is his best song and an outstanding arrangement of guitar parts.
+mrswimmyboy You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but consider this:Peter Green was an amazing guitarist. I never said his music lacked an ethereal feel, only that Danny surpassed him in that arena. Everything Peter did prior to Danny was really good, but I believe Danny drove him (and the other FM musicians) to excel to keep up with him. Most of the Green-led songs everyone raves about (Green Manalishi, Black Magic Woman, Albatross, Like It This Way) were not only co-written by Danny, but featured him in the lead rather than Peter. Same with the Welch-era. Peter and Bob get credit for a lot of the writing and guitar work that was actually Danny. Remember, also that Danny joined FM at the age of 17...his first "real" band as Boilerhouse was just a bar band...and he was not only keeping up with his mentor, but eclipsing him at less than 20 years of age. (Listen to "Like It This Way") Then he as left holding the bag after Peter's departure, followed by Spencer's. A lot of pressure for a kid barely shaving.Yes, Danny's solo efforts were somewhat weak...the pressure of fronting a world class band mixed with onset mental issues, drugs and alcohol made him crack under pressure and he imploded into his own black hole. But that doesn't make his accomplishments any less phenomenal.Agree with you on Sands of Time, but do give Dragonfly, Dust, Sunny Side of Heaven, Tell Me All the Things You Do, Station Man, etc. a careful, thoughtful listen and you might find yourself thinking differently.Peace.
+buellosaurusrex Yes, I'm completely familiar with Danny Kirwan's work. He is one of the great underrated guitarists of the late 1960s. Unfortunately forgotten or unknown by most people by now. He was able to inspire and compete with Peter Green. Without Green's depth IMO. I love Kirwan's music and especially guitar playing. He just isn't in the top rank of writers, singers or guitarists. Most of his songs are sketchy and incomplete "grooves", with forgettable lyrics. Combine his music with a good [uncredited] lyricist like on Dust, and we hear what could have been. Tell Me All the Things, Coming Your Way, Station Man... These are good unfinished songs with mediocre poetry. Some of the songs like Purple Dancer etc which were never featured on record were pretty bad. Still, there's a lot to like about him. Some fantastic guitar settings, solos and a few songs where he really rises to the occasion. I treasure my mix of his best songs.
+mrswimmyboy It's haunting to think about what Danny might have evolved into in his late twenties had things gone differently. I (personally) believe getting sacked from FM was the straw that broke Danny's spirit...mentally, musically, and emotionally, although many would probably dispute that. After "Bare Trees" it seemed that though the lights were on, nobody was home. People lament about Jimi, Janis and Jim all being so young; Danny wasn't even 24 before his downslide began. And it was all downhill. Nice to meet another individual who appreciates his talent. Peace.
+buellosaurusrex True, but I think there are other factors too. Mick Fleetwood and others have talked about how hard it was to interact with Danny, even in the late 1960s. He seems to have dealing with major social problems even then. I think going from blues to pop music set him back too. Moving from being one of the better blues- rock guitarists to becoming an inconsistent pop singer songwriter. He was never going to front a band successfully [even part time] creatively or in terms of personality. The result is becoming a "footnote" in rock music history. Its a shame... He was more talented than many of his contemporaries, but they could engage audiences, collaborate with other musicians, write good lyrics consistently etc. Things Danny couldn't really do.
fantastic song on the album future games, my fav of the old fm -- the pre buckingham-nicks era. i love the old stuff just as much as the newer stuff.. very underrated album. awesome, thanks..
@pastorekaren9, Yes, and the sad thing is that many FM biographies take this over. He is treated by many critics and FM fans as a kind of session musician, while in reality he composed at least half of the songs from the moment he joined. Without him, they probably would have made conservative blues from here to eternity, with Spencer penning one Elmore James clone after the other.
It was nice to see that Danny could have a career outside Fleetwood Mac, it justified the talent Peter Green saw in the young man. It's also tragic that he suffered a similar fate as his famous mentor. Where is Danny now?
Thanks for the journey of music. I could go on, but we all know what the basement parties looked like. Thank you for the experience. It was awesome...and John. Went to high school with him. The most awesome cartoonist ever. And then he went on and is a part of Guitar Box....but I knew him when we went to high school together. Saw him at a bad high school reunion. Still cool as ever, John Yuknas, brother of Tom who owned the Swollen head. You were a hot moment. Your talent was beyond compare.
Probably my alltime favourite Kirwan song. A perfect blend of prog rock and folk. Especially his bell-like guitar playing above Christine's layer of keys makes me sweat and shiver, everytime I am listening to it. But I also have to compliment you on your choice of pictures in this video. The result is very haunting indeed.
Best pics that I've seen to this great classic. Kirwan's a genius of the melodic guitar with excellent lyrics to match. Thanks for piecing this video together, Oxgangs1966.
@hugebigframe, It was clear that Jeremy Spencer (who is posting there often) was rather annoyed about this post, since he responded 'Is there a smiley indicating a yawn?'. But if Danny can't defend himself, others should do it for him. And luckily there are many people who care about him.... Still nice you are so good taking care of someone you consider as an influence on your playing.
I can tell that this is two different songs put together to make one track. The real Sand of Time begins at 1:34. It's book ended by the other song, Blackened Night or whatever you want to call it. I'm just saying that I can tell it was originally 2 different tracks or demos.
Nice video. Especially the collection of photos of the early band configurations. I'm a big fan of the band during Danny Kirwan's years with it. Thanks for putting this together.
I can appreciate that..love your slide show...I just don't like how you tube just decides to randomly pull videos..the other version did not have a cool slide show...Danny is extremely talented and should always get credit..I am looking for Buckingham Nicks albums..
@pastorekaren9, It's also rather strange that no one seems to know when and where this infamous guitar smashing/head-against-the-wall banging, which led to his subsequent dismissal, actually took place. There is a bootleg from 31 August (New York city) - the month they claim he was fired - when he was still in the band. McVie and Fleetwood both have rather contradictory stories about where this took place. I have a feeling there is something fishy going on here, but I could be wrong...
@hugebigframe, That would be truly awesome. Bless you! I can't imagine this wouldn't make him happy. A while ago I did some googling on Danny and from the messages on the blogs and forums etc, it seems he has quite a number of very dedicated fans.
@pastorekaren9, Yes, that was in that interview from 1995, I guess. He said he played a little guitar and should be glad he was asked to join Fleetwood Mac at all, or something in that vein. It made me rather sad he thought so little of himself...
@pastorekaren9, Yes, he was easy as good a guitar player as Peter Green. Just with another tone and technique. He had one of the most stunning vibratos ever and some of his solos & some of his singing can really drive me to tears. But you say he played lead in many Green songs. I know he did in Oh Well and in some songs they clearly. share the lead. But are there also other Green composed songs in which he is the only main player? Apart from this, he clearly arranged much of e.g. Albatross.
@hugebigframe, It's really good to hear he is doing fine and taking care of his health. I understand he is a rather private person, which I respect completely - I am too. Still it would be awesome if he could enlighten us on some issues that went on in Fleetwood Mac back then. It's time he's going to combat all the half-trues McVie and Fleetwood are telling about him a bit...
@pastorekaren9, Yes Karen, I am getting rather sick of the way he is treated by his ex-fellow band members. Especially Fleetwood and McVie's treatment is hard to forgive. They only seem to think it's necessary to mention why he was fired and not why he was hired years back. Fleetwood's autobiography made me very mad! I sometimes have the feeling John McVie is a bit jealous of Danny. One of the reasons could be that McVie and Fleetwood are admittedly good musicians, but no composers at all.
@pastorekaren9, Yes, thanks Karen. But that wasn't my message, but someone who reacted on my message. He posted it by mistake a few times and that is not allowed by UA-cam.
@hugebigframe, I hope you are right. I interviewed some stars in the past about very unpleasant things that happened some 35 years ago, and it was clear they were still not over them. I don't know if Danny has access to the internet and can read the Ledge and these kind of forums. Yesterday there was another early Fleetwood Mac biography posted. And again it was all about Peter Green. I think both Danny and Jeremy Spencer got one sentence in this story.
@rctid - oi pal this was copied from an old album cassette bought in the 80's, if you like the song buy the cd and make John and Mick richer..ok, I don't know if danny gets a penny for his work...
sorry..but you need to re listen to this song on you tube..the sound quality is bad..and unfortunetly you tube went and pulled the other videos made of this song..:(
What a wonderful light he was.RIP DANNY.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant songs ever written.
+buellosaurusrex Amen. Just a gem.
He got better with every FM album. This reminds me of the sunny early spring of 1972. A great guitarist that didn’t get his due.
Untouchable
Oh Danny, if only you knew how much this little girl appreciates your guitar work and you. Bless you.
OH DANNY BOY....he haunts and mesmerizes like no other guitarist in the Mac camp ever did...far more melodic than Green(But I still love Greeny)
They just don't get any better than this. This is the music that is played in Heaven.
i bought the first four fleetwood mac LP's on vinyl. still have 'em. not a stevie nicks or lindsay buckingham on any of 'em. still their best.
A Kirwan Masterpiece !
This song totally shifted me to Fleetwood Mac, though I had been working at a head shop in LaGrange, Ill. the Swollen Head. I got a speeding ticket and my dad told me to get a job to pay it off. Thanks Jim... great to visit yesterday.
I agree; terrible that he's so underrated. His music is magical.
After 40 something years of listening to Fleetwood Mac, I find out about Danny.
May God bless him and bring him out to play for us again.
+buellosaurusrex He has been described as playing music as a hobby ie. for himself. I'm glad to hear that...
i honestly believe if we had music like this in the mainstream today, we would be seeing much more people smile (properly smile)
The magic of a black night
I never get tired of this Incredible Musical Masterpiece..! Sands of a Long Time.....
I was once a young man & I listened to the Mac all the time. Beautiful .
I have to say I am new to Danny Kirwan, somehow he escaped my attention all these years then someone played me 'Sunny side of Heaven' and my jaw dropped, such fresh, musical ideas simply and beautifully executed-and with feeling. I am a convert!
Michael Gorman listen to dragonfly.
Absolutely fabulous song. I am not seeing the other Future Games songs on here tonight. I still play my vinyl that I bought the day it came out 40 yrs ago!!!
danny kirwan inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame 1998 so easy to see why thanks mr kirwan take care stay warm peace
love you, Danny Kirwan!

Future Games is the best Fleetwood Mac album of all, and this is the best song on the album. I also still have the vinyl album I bought when it first came out.
Danny Kirwan was great, man....and some of his guitar sounds can't be beat.
From a beautiful summer day in the northwest........ so glad to see this video back on-
Danny Kirwan should get credit for his song.......
The structure of Sands of Time is fascinating. "Time-wise," it is 14 beats, 6+8 by my interpretation. I can't talk about this without going totally hyperbolic. I think Kirwan was the most masterful musician in rock at the time he was active.
Masterpiece!!
From Blues to Pop Danny was such a GREAT talent....
He was such a comet.... burning out WAY TO EARLY...
My left ear enjoyed that!
Give Danny a pat on the back. He's made a lot of people smile over the "Sands of Time."
Danny Kirwan, talento musicale e grande espressività; coesisteva con Peter Green nei F.M sebbene abbia mostrato doti compositive individuali e in questo brano è particolarmente ispirato.
+eli58 Si amigo. Danny Kirwan es monumental.
One of my favorite all time songs Danny kirwans guitar work always inspiring!
I loved it sober so it must be great!!!!!!
change my day

Varázslatos. Danny Kirwan egy csodálatos ajándék.
@Oxgangs1966 mate you did a superb job.......bravo to you....I'm a Kirwan diehard fan from Greece....this video's great

I am suffering. I am waiting until now till my last breath for his warmth to be close to my body once more
@Oxgangs1966 Danny still gets his royalties check, which is keeping him alive.

Great collection luv choices-/ what happened to Earl Grey, Sunny side ST, etc.

joya, una delicatessen de guitarras
Pure genius- would love to get a better copy

can you post - open the door ...i love that song ,,,plz ...... reminds me of someone i love .... if you gonna pull it again send file plz
@rctid -- i've got an extra buckingham nicks lp from 1973 - if that is what your looking for...
@MsOndine (myself),
I meant 'solo albums', not 'solo album'.
@jandy1719 that would be so sweet!
@MrNevadared,
If Fleetwood Mac is sharing their profits, why did Danny Kirwan have to live on the streets for such a long time?
@douglasj56 Your a good man!
4.07 Danny looks about 12 years old
@rctid - oi pal this was copied from an old album cassette bought in the 80's, if you like the song buy the cd and make John and Mick richer..ok, I don't know if danny gets a penny for his work...
